DESCRIPTION:Join Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as we look at Jacques Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” \nJacques Offenbach was the darling of French musical theater during Napoleon III’s “Second Empire.” Born a Jew in early 19th-century Germany\, he was able to find a greater measure of tolerance\, like his contemporaries Heinrich Heine and Giacomo Meyerbeer\, in the relatively progressive French capital. His operettas remain staples of that genre\, but his elusive goal of composing a full opera was realized only at the end of career; “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” is that work. Drawing on stories written by the German Romantic author E.T.A. Hoffmann\, “Les Contes” follows a fictional Hoffmann as he pursues three elusive\, unattainable women in his never-ending search for love. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr.
