SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Hector Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust“
DESCRIPTION:Join Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as they look at Hector Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust.”\nNeval’s 1828 translation into French of Goethe’s “Faust“ triggered Hector Berlioz to compose his 1846 adaptation. The composer described it as a “dramatic legend\,” a work that isn’t a choral symphony but not quite a traditional opera\, either; it often has been called “an opera of the mind.” But with modern technology\, however. it more and more is presented as a comprehensive\, immensely satisfying stage work. “La Damnation de Faust” has all the grand effects and intimate moments characteristic of “French Grand Opera\,” namely large choruses\, ballet\, star turns for the principal singers\, and a mezzo-soprano rather than a soprano in the lead female role. Its symphonic excerpts are regularly included on orchestra programs and will probably be recognizable. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required.

SUMMARY:Across the Pond: A Policy Update
DESCRIPTION:What’s the meaning of life for the United Kingdom after “Brexit?” \nOn June 23\, Britain held a referendum on whether to remain part of the 28-member European Union. The vote was 51.9 percent in favor of leaving. The exit from the EU will take a while\, but the country’s leadership change was almost immediate. \nWhat do the changes mean for Britain? What does this mean for relationships between that nation and ours? Specifically\, how will the changes affect Georgia? According to the Georgia Department of Economic Development\, Georgia is the fourth-largest exporter to Britain; Britain is the seventh-largest importer to Georgia. \nRegister here to find out answers to these questions and more at\, “Across the Pond: A Policy Update\,” a noon Policy Briefing Luncheon on Monday\, August 22\, at Cobb County’s Georgian Club. Hosted by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation\, the keynote speaker for this event is Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford\, the British Consul General in Atlanta since 2013.\nThis event is open to the public. Registration is $35 and includes lunch.
