SUMMARY:Otto Neumann: Selections from the Rothschild Collection
DESCRIPTION:Oglethorpe University Museum of Art’s new exhibit opens on September 23 and presents more than 100 drawings\, watercolors\, and prints by German artist Otto Neumann. Neumann\, a Gentile who refused to divorce his Jewish wife\, Hilde Rothschild\, lived with the constant strain of the political climate in Nazi Germany. During this period of oppression\, Neumann drew strength from his love of family\, literature\, and art. Inspired by Gustav Doré’s illustrations\, Neumann illustrated Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy\, creating iterations of sketches and prints of the various cantos. He created interpretive studies of classical mythology and Biblical stories. Much of Neumann’s work speaks of conflict\, duress\, and crises. Introspective self-portraits\, drawings\, and paintings of his wife and daughter are also on view and show a closely bonded family under strain. This exhibition gives a unique window into the life of a reserved man with a revolutionary spirit.

SUMMARY:Swiss Author Reading: Milena Moser
DESCRIPTION:Join the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta as we welcome Swiss author Milena Moser as she reads an excerpt from her book\, “Das Glück sieht immer anders aus” (“Happiness – What did I expect?”) \nA Q&A session with the author will follow the reading which will be in both German and English followed by a small reception.\n\n\n\nAbout the author:\n\n\nMilena Moser is one of Switzerland’s most well-known and beloved authors. She has published 18 books to date\, novels\, short stories and memoirs. They are translated in nine European languages\, three of her novels were adapted for the screen. She wrote radio plays\, numerous essays\, and a weekly column for eight years.\nHer success was not immediate: After starting to write seriously in Paris in the 1980s\, she collected rejection letters for six years before her friends took pity on her and published her first three books themselves. Even her first novel\, “The Cleaning Lady’s Island” (Die Putzfraueninsel)\, that later sold over 250’000 copies\, was self-published. Her own struggle to get published inspired creative writing workshops that are famous for their fun and supportive atmosphere.\nMilena Moser lived in Switzerland and in San Francisco\, and she has recently made her home in New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Sounds of Silence! Metropolis and Alloy Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:A work of visionary genius\, Fritz Lang’s Metropolis remains—90 years after its debut— one of the most remarkable films of all time. Using groundbreaking special effects\, Metropolis imagines a bleak future in which the working class is enslaved not only by a powerful ruling class but by technology itself. Experience this pioneering piece of cinematic history as it was meant to be seen. \nPerforming from Lincoln Center to the Louvre\, Alloy Orchestra\, a three-man musical ensemble\, utilizes an unexpected assemblage of objects to create musical accompaniment to classic silent films. With a combination of “found” percussion (some call it “a rack of junk”!) and state-of-the-art electronics\, Alloy Orchestra can conjure up a Weimar-era German band or make the audience imagine it’s being swept up in a populist uprising in Czarist Russia. Don’t miss this opportunity to “hear” silent film as you never have before! \nPerchance single tickets online or at the Rialto Center’s Box Office. Rialto Series Subscriptions for 2016-2017 year are available at the Rialto Center’s Box Office now. \nFree Validated Parking at the 100 Peachtree Parking (formally known as the Equitable Parking Deck). Check the Box Office or Rialto Center’s website for details. \nFree Pre-Show Events: join us an hour before the Series shows to learn more about the performances. \nFollow us on Twitter\, Instagram\, and (new!) Snapchat for behind the scenes fun! And use #SoundsOfSilents and/or #Rialto100 to share your performance experience!
