SUMMARY:Envisioning the Future and Understanding the Realities of India’s Urban Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:India\, a land of ancient wisdom and cultural world heritage\, is home to the world’s first\ncities. In the last twenty years it has experienced unprecedented growth\, development\, and change\, altering its physical\, cultural\, and social landscape with dramatic effect. Today\, its cities embody a paradoxical mix of globalization\, modernity\, and advanced technology with regionalism\, tradition\, and religion\, juxtaposed with extreme poverty and\ninequality. \nSustainability\, in all its facets has emerged as a key problem in India’s development story. Urbanization is not an independent variable of development\, but an integral part and product of the development process itself. Therefore\, there is a need to understand urban issues as part of a larger development process affecting both rural and urban communities and livelihoods\, employing historical and contemporary perspectives (with regional and global implications). \nBuilding off research in the fields of Sociology\, Biology\, and Architecture\, the conference will examine contemporary urban growth in India and its effects on the everyday ecologies of its people. The goal is a more holistic understanding of India’s urban ecologies\, their interdependence\, and the need for more sustainable strategies for urbanization. India’s cities can provide applicable lessons to the more global concerns of urbanization around the world. \n

SUMMARY:Thailand: Shifting Ground between the US and a Rising China
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Zawacki\, a Bangkok-based human rights researcher and advocate\, will present his recently-published book on Thailand’s evolving foreign relations and their geo-political implications in Southeast Asia.  After many post-World War II years as a key strategic ally of the United States\, Thailand has begun a sharp pivot toward China.  Consistent with US policy drift since the turn of the century and Thailand’s deepening adoption of China’s model of “authoritarian capitalism”\, the country is increasingly within the orbit of Beijing.  Zawacki will describe the factors and forces behind this shift\, and what it means for a Trump administration finding its way in Asia. Joining Zawacki in discussion is Ari Levine\, University of Georgia History Professor and expert in China. Co-sponsored by the Department of History and the International Law Society.

SUMMARY:ACIR Presents Professor Peter Swire: The Clash of the U.S. and the E.U. on Privacy and National Security
DESCRIPTION:Concerns have arisen in Europe that US efforts to gather personal data for security reasons jeopardize the privacy rights of European Union citizens. As a result\, we are in the midst of two historic areas of tension between the European Union and the United States in the area of data privacy. The first is the entry into effect of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May\, 2018. The GDPR updates and expands the EU Data Protection Directive that entered into effect in 1998. It provides strong new individual privacy rights\, places many new compliance obligations on organizations\, and sets fines up to four percent of a company’s global revenue. The second is the continuing litigation that activist Max Schrems is bringing against Facebook\, challenging the lawfulness of flows of personal data to the United States. Schrems won the first round in the European Court of Justice\, which struck down the EU/US “Safe Harbor” in 2015. Recently the Irish High Court found in favor of Schrems in his complaint against the widely used Standard Contract Clauses for transferring data from the E.U. to the U.S. and elsewhere. That case is now scheduled to be referred to he European Court of Justice once again\, posing the possibility of a massive blockade of personal data from the E.U. to the U.S.\, with potentially huge fines for U.S. companies who don’t comply.\n\nThe speaker will draw on his two decades of experience in the privacy debates between the E.U. and the U.S. His Brookings book on the topic was published in 1998. He served in the White House as the Clinton Administration’s lead privacy official during negotiation of the Safe Harbor in 2000. When Schrems won the 2015 case\, Swire was the only U.S. person not in the government asked to testify for European privacy regulators about the effect of the decision. In the Irish trial\, Swire submitted testimony of over 300 pages explaining relevant U.S. privacy and surveillance law to the court.

SUMMARY:Ultimately Human - Featuring Andrew Young and Ross Rossin
DESCRIPTION:Former ambassador and civil rights icon Andrew Young and renowned portrait artist Ross Rossin\, the Schwartz Artist-in-Residence at Emory University\, will meet for a public conversation\, titled “Ultimately Human\,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, March 27\, at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. \nAdmission is free\, but attendees are asked to register in advance. \nRossin will display onstage many of his extraordinary portraits\, while he and Young use them to reflect on questions of identity\, how it informs our view about others\, the creative process\, artistic meaning and the beauty in diversity. \nYoung served as director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. He was elected to three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives\, was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and served two terms as mayor of Atlanta. Rossin’s photorealistic portrait of Young debuted in 2009. \nThe March 27 program also will feature poet and spoken word performer Tavares Stephens\, and cellist/filmmaker Okorie Johnson\, who performs under the name OkCello. \nRossin’s residency at Emory coincides with FACE\, the Frankenstein Anniversary Celebration at Emory\, a year-long university-wide celebration of the 200th anniversary of the novel\, and is part of the Ethics and the Arts Program at Emory’s Center for Ethics. \nLast fall\, Rossin began his residency and helped launch the Frankenstein bicentennial on campus by unveiling a compelling portrait of a new interpretation of Dr. Frankenstein’s creation\, described by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel. \nThe event is the first of the newly renamed Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversations\, a series of public conversations on campus highlighting creativity and imagination as essential to every discipline and enterprise. By putting distinguished visiting thinkers and creators in conversation with one another and members of the Emory community\, Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversations give audiences access into the innovative minds and creative processes of leaders in a wide range of fields.
