SUMMARY:Latin American Crossroads: Georgia's Ties With Peru
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by: \nIn spite of its president’s resignation in March\, Peru has continued its solid growth path as it rapidly embraces market forces and multilateral institutions. The resource-rich\, biologically diverse country of 32 million people lags Mexico alone in the World Bank’s rankings for ease of doing business Latin America. \nBeyond giants like Coca-Cola and Delta\, though\, Georgia firms have been slow to tap into the market. Keen not to lose any more ground\, the state’s economic-development arm opened a Lima office in March and took a trade delegation there in April. In July\, the Georgia Ports Authority will send leaders there to further logistics links and enhance trade in tangelos\, grapes\, asparagus and other crops. \nJoin Global Atlanta\, Emory Executive Education and the Consulate General of Peru as we convene expert speakers to explore the nuances of the Peruvian market and the ways this important South American country is already connected to our state. \nIntroductory remarks: Miguel Aleman Urteaga\, Consul General of Peru in Atlanta \nBusiness and Trade Panel:  \n-Dealmaking in Peru’s many fast-growing sectors —  Luis Felipe Segura\, Director\, PwC \n-How Georgia’s Ports are deepening agricultural trade with Peru — Chris Logan\, Senior Director – Trade Development\, Georgia Ports Authority \n-Why Georgia opened its newest office in Lima — Mary Waters\, Deputy Commissioner\, International Trade\, Georgia Department of Economic Development \n-A mining company’s perspective on a Peruvian trade mission: Robbie Cowsert\, Kamin LLC \nCultural and Educational Perspectives \nHear 5-minute updates from Georgians who’ve recently traveled to Peru to advance their initiatives\, creating connections back home in the process. The lineup:  \n-Stan Mullins\, international visual artist in Athens\, Ga.\, recently met in Lima with Peruvian artist Victor Delfin\, a 90-year-old sculptor whose famous “The Kiss” is an iconic piece of public art anchoring a key coastal park place in the capital. The artists connected on the history of indigenous cultures\, as Mr. Mullins is in the midst of creating a massive bronze statue of Yamacraw Indian Chief Tomochichi\, who interacted peacefully with British colonists first arriving in Georgia.   \n-Ernesto Silva\, a professor at Kennesaw State University\, is returning May 28 from taking his latest cohort of Spanish study-abroad participants to Peru. Mr. Silva was instrumental in the university’s “Year of Peru” program in 2011-12\, and he has been an advocate for Peruvian cuisine and the use of the culinary arts to advance the country’s economy.   \n-Giannina Bettis\, a Peru native and long-time Georgia resident\, imports fabrics  and other handicrafts from Peruvian villages\, embroidering them on bags and clothing that can be sold by her company\, Peruvian Stamp. A portion of each sale goes back to the artisans who craft the designs. She also operates a tourism service and will be traveling to Peru in July.   \nHosted by: \n \n  \nSupported by:

SUMMARY:Atlanta Council on International Relations Presents: Dr. Mona Tajali on 'The Rise of Islamic Politics in Turkey'
DESCRIPTION:ACIR Welcomes Dr. Mona Tajali who will speak on “The Rise of Islamic in Politics in Turkey.” \nFor decades the relationship between the United States and Turkey has been described as one of the most important relationships in the region. During the Cold War Turkey\, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)\, was the backbone of NATO’s defense of its “Southern Flank.” Today however\, such factors as domestic politics\, changing national perceptions\, and regional conflicts have served to undermine both Turkey’s relationship with NATO and the United States. What had often been described as a durable startegic relationship between the United States and Turkey has become frayed. \nCome and engage in a dynamic dialogue with Professor Mona Tajali and explore root causes of this change in relationship. \n$35 for ACIR members;\n$45 for non-members;\n$75 annual membership \nMembers are welcomed to bring non-member friends to ACIR events at member rates. The same guest may only be invited once at member rates.

SUMMARY:Developing Advanced Work-Based Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Join the German American Chambers of Commerce for a delicious breakfast and an engaging discussion on: Developing Advanced Work-Based Higher Education. \nIn both Germany and the United States\, employers search for new strategies to recruit and train people in times of a dynamically evolving economy and rising educational expectations. In this context\, we observe the proliferation of work-based higher education programs in both countries. This development challenges the common classification found in the political economy and educational policy literature that distinguishes between collectively governed dual apprenticeships in Germany and market-driven on-the-job training in the US. \nThis presentation proposes: an alternative that identifies significant similarities in the governance mode of work-based higher education across the two countries. Based on expert interviews and document analysis\, this discussion focuses on complex multi-actor governance at the nexus of vocational training and higher education and explores consequences for contemporary policy-making in advanced skill formation.

While we may soon fly to Mars\, we oftentimes find it difficult to safely cross the street. An apparent paradox\, considering how crucial transportation is to our personal and economic well-being. We want to move freely from one place to another\, and we want the same for the goods we need or desire. However\, transportation is also a major contributor to climate change. It recently surpassed electricity generation to become the biggest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States.\nFrank Wefering will explore the latest transportation trends\, accounting for the rapid and fundamental changes currently observed in the field\, especially in relation to mobility\, accessibility\, and road safety in cities. He will also discuss the crucial importance of sustainable transportation modes\, such as walking\, cycling and public transit for today’s climate conscious\, healthy and livable cities. Based on his experience from Europe and the United States\, he will discuss urban mobility planning solutions that can make a true difference in making our cities more sustainable. \nAbout Frank Wefering\nFrank Wefering earned his German diploma degree in economics at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (’94) and his Master of Economics at North Carolina State University (´97). Mr. Wefering is a consultant with more than 20 years of international experience in sustainable development research and implementation. He specializes in the application of sustainability principles to transportation and urban mobility projects.\nIn early 2017\, Frank Wefering became the first Director of Sustainability at Greenman-Pedersen\, Inc. (GPI)\, a New York-based engineering consulting firm with 1\,500 employees across the United States. He is responsible for developing a GPI service line centered on sustainability planning and transportation. Mr. Wefering is also the founder and former CEO of Changing Track\, LLC in New York and\, for more than 14 years\, was a senior consultant at Rupprecht Consult in Cologne\, Germany. He served as advisor to the United Nations\, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)\, the European Commission and cities worldwide on sustainable transportation and integrated planning.
