SUMMARY:U.S. vs. IRAN: Back to the Negotiating Table?
DESCRIPTION:Tensions between the United States and Iran are back on the rise. On May 8\, 2018 President Trump announced that the United States would no longer participate in the Join Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). As of November 5th\, all U.S. sanctions on Iran are back into effect\, including energy and financial sanctions. Iran is already feeling the reaction in their economy as their oil exports decrease\, companies withdraw from the state\, and their currency value declines. \nBut will these reimposed sanctions make any difference in bringing Iran back to the negotiating table or will Iran decide to retaliate by withdrawing their own commitments to the JCPOA? What will the real impact be without international cooperation? Join us for an evening with Ray Takeyh from the Council on Foreign Relations as we discuss these questions and what the future holds for U.S.-Iran relations.

SUMMARY:North Korea & the Future of Security on the Korean Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:ACIR is honored to host retired South Korean Lieutenant General and former Commander of South Korea’s Special Forces In-bum Chun who will speak on the topic\, “Contemporary Issues on the Korean Peninsula.” \nGeneral Chun pulls no punches when he speaks\, and he has much to say about North Korea’s “Supreme Leader\,” Kim Jong Un\, and his nuclear ambitions. Is Kim stalling and buying time with the current American and South Korean administrations while he continues his march toward completion of a nuclear tipped missile? General Chun’s review of past European and American administrations as well as the current one will prove to be a most interesting one. \nGeneral Chun is the first South Korean officer since the Vietnam War to be awarded the U.S. Bronze Star\, and in 2016\, he received the U.S. Special Operations Command Medal. General Chun speaks perfect English\, and he leaves no misunderstandings about his positions regarding threats on the Korean Peninsula and what realistic options face the United States and South Korea.

SUMMARY:US-China at 40: Seeking A New Framework to Manage Bilateral Relations
DESCRIPTION:ATLANTA — Forty years after U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping ended three decades of estrangement between the United States and the People’s Republic of China\, The Carter Center will convene a three-day symposium on Sino-American relations. \nThe symposium\, which takes place Jan. 17-19\, will include talks and panel discussions featuring several dozen leading scholars\, think-tank experts\, and veterans of statecraft. Much of the event\, including keynote remarks on the morning of Jan. 18 by President Carter and Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai\, will be open to the press. \nThe symposium comes at a critical time for U.S.-China relations\, which in recent months have been marked by increasing tension and an acrimonious trade war. \n“As President Carter himself recently noted\, the benefits that both our countries have reaped from four decades of increasing cooperation are now in jeopardy because of a deterioration of trust and respect in both capitals\,” said Carter Center CEO Ambassador (ret.) Mary Ann Peters. “Ensuring that the United States and China can continue to navigate toward collaboration on bilateral and global issues is one of the vital challenges of our time.” \nBackground: On Dec. 15\, 1978\, Carter and Deng announced that they would “normalize” diplomatic ties between the two nations on Jan. 1\, 1979\, laying the foundation for the rapid growth of bilateral relations. Today\, the American and Chinese economies are the world’s two largest\, and Sino-American economic\, political\, and military relations weigh heavily on the global future. President Carter’s breakthrough with China stands as one of the major foreign-policy accomplishments of his presidency.

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Decoding U.S.-China Trade
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Andrew Wedeman\, Ph.D.\, Georgia State University \nThough arguably the most advanced economy in the world\, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade. These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship\, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness\, while swelling China’s. Bad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China. What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices? There are several available\, yet they remain mostly unused.
