SUMMARY:How Extremists will Capitalize from COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Extremists from across the political spectrum have been exploiting COVID-19. Crisis are the perfect episode for them to capitalize as leaves a vacuum in the political space for them to fill with misinformation or exacerbate people’s fears of the other. These groups may even take credit for unfortunate events for which they are not responsible. The Anti-Defamation League and the FBI both have warned about the potential surge in hate crimes against Asian Americans because of this pandemic. Politicization of the virus\, such as calling it the “Wuhan flu\,” have led to actual cases of hate crimes throughout the country. \nIt is closer than you think: a sign reading “Wuhan Plague” was spotted in the Atlanta Beltline \n“Their instinct to capitalize on people’s misery and suffering is consistent across the ideological spectrum\, from right-wing extremists to violent jihadists” says Dr. Mia Bloom\, Professor at Georgia State University. Dr. Bloom\, an expert in terrorism and violent extremism\, will share her analysis of how this health crisis is serving extremists groups to recruit new followers who may perceive them as more capable or more honest than their own governments.

SUMMARY:Flattening the Curve of U.S.- Iran Tensions
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 is ravaging Iran. So are US sanctions. \nTehran’s initial response to COVID-19 was disastrous. As a result\, Iran is the country in the Middle East most affected by this pandemic. At the same time\, despite exemptions\, U.S. sanctions are jeopardizing international efforts to deliver medical supplies and humanitarian goods to a country that was already under economic hardship prior to the pandemic. \nIn Washington\, President Trump has resisted international calls for easing sanctions on Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Tehran\, President Hassan Rouhani has refused to ask for aid from the U.S. as long as the U.S. continues the “extreme pressure” campaign that includes economic sanctions against Iran. The losers? The Iranian people who suffer from the broken Iranian economy\, from the U.S. sanctions and now from this global pandemic. \nA silver lining from COVID-19? \nThere is no one better than Ambassador Thomas Pickering to shed light on how COVID-19 could provide the chance for both nations to adopt a new approach that can mitigate the suffering\, avoid military conflict\, and end what seems to be a zero-sum game. \nAmbassador Thomas Pickering last served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs\, the third highest post in the U.S. State Department\, and as ambassador to the United Nations\, the Russian Federation\, India\, Israel\, El Salvador\, Nigeria and Jordan.

SUMMARY:From Polar Bears to Peaches: 50th Anniversary of Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:The North Pole has ice all year round as it stands\, but as global temperatures rise\, ice levels could dissipate in the summer months. Increased melting of ice sheets and losses of seasonal sea ice are both commonly reported consequences of climate change that can impact polar marine ecosystems globally.\n\nWhat about Georgia? Her interdisciplinary research combines oceanography\, marine ecology\, and biogeochemistry\, and concentrates on the interactions between climate and marine ecosystems.\n\nThis program is presented by the Council Members Forum Steering Committee and the Young Leaders Executive Board\n\nAs a courtesy to the community\, this Members Forum program is OPEN TO ALL.
