SUMMARY:European Film Festival of Atlanta Opening Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever European Film Festival of Atlanta will open this Friday\, May 6th at 7pm at Plaza Atlanta! For the official Opening Ceremony\, we will hear opening remarks from the representatives of the 11 countries involved in the festival — Belgium\, the Republic of Cyprus\, the Czech Republic\, Estonia\, France\, Germany\, Greece\, Ireland\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, and the Netherlands – alongside the directors of Alliance Française and Goethe-Zentrum. \nFollowing the opening ceremony\, as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian nation under attack\, the European Film Festival of Atlanta 2022 will screen the award-winning Ukrainian documentary The Earth Is Blue As an Orange (2020) by Iryna Tsilyk. In a prerecorded video\, director Iryna Tsilyk will introduce the film and highlight its newfound significance. Reception to follow the screening. \nSynopsis: To cope with the daily trauma of living in a war-zone\, Anna and her children are making a film together about their life in the most surreal surroundings. Winner of the Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival\, The Earth is Blue as an Orange stands not only as a remarkable document of the Russo-Ukrainian War through the lens – literally – of this family’s creative process\, but as an optimistic testament to the power of art and beauty in the face of destruction.

SUMMARY:Building for Change
DESCRIPTION:Kennesaw State University’s (KSU) Department of Architecture\, in partnership with the Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA\, brings you the 2022 Spring Lecture\, “Building for Change\,” with Shirley Blumberg\, Founding Partner\, KPMB Architects and a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to architecture and community. This lecture will illustrate the power of architecture in bringing change to communities through promoting pluralism\, social justice\, and equity in architectural practice. \nShirley’s projects in the cultural sector include the Global Centre for Pluralism based in Ottawa\, Toronto’s Fort York Public Library\, and currently\, the competition-winning Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Other academic projects include the Julis Romo Rabinowitz and Louis A. Simpson International Building at Princeton University\, the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre and Ponderosa Hub\, both at the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, and CIGI\, the Centre for International Governance Innovation Campus in Waterloo Ontario\, which received an American Institute of Architects Honor Award\, a Royal Institute of British Architects International Award\, and Canada’s Governor General’s Medal. \nSocial justice projects have also been a focus of her practice. She has designed affordable housing projects for Toronto Community Housing\, affordable student housing at UBC\, and prototypical housing for the northern Indigenous community of Fort Severn. \nInspired by the Order of Canada’s recognition – they desire a better country – Shirley began a conversation with like-minded colleagues that became BEAT – Building Equality in Architecture Toronto – a grassroots initiative to promote equality for women and minorities in the profession; today there are chapters across Canada. She has also led the firm’s Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion (EDI) initiative\, now a framework for policy and practice at KPMB. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 13 at 4:30 pm in the Architecture Gallery for the opening of the Ismaili Center Houston and Global Centre for Pluralism exhibition featuring guided tours and the historic signing of the MoU between KSU and the Ismaili Council. The exhibition will also include the architectural renderings of the Ismaili Center Houston\, the seventh Centre to join the global network of Ismaili Centres\, and their contributions to promoting pluralism and a deeper understanding among societies. \n*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances\, the “Building for Change” lecture with Shirley Blumberg\, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday\, April 13 at 4:30 pm\, is postponed to Wednesday\, April 20 at 4:30 pm. \nThe event is free\, open to the public\, and will be held at the Design II Auditorium at the Marietta Campus.

SUMMARY:Swiss Cleantech Symposium at UGA: Can Tech Save the World?
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s annual consumption of resources currently far exceeds the planet’s capacity to regenerate itself sustainably. To preserve the environment for the generations to come\, it is vital that we shift to cleaner technologies. While efforts in various countries are underway\, global collaboration on cleantech innovation is critical to achieve environmental objectives such as water conservation\, biodiversity preservation\, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The ever-growing challenges facing the world of environmental protection can only be met if the international community works together and coordinates its efforts. \nWith the aim of creating a dialogue and accelerating the sharing of solutions around major environmental challenges across the Atlantic\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, the Swiss Business Hub in Atlanta\, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Georgia are partnering to host a Cleantech Symposium. Centered around the exhibition “CAN TECH SAVE THE WORLD? Swiss solutions to protect the environment\,” the symposium will showcase innovative cleantech solutions from Switzerland to make our societies resolutely more sustainable. This event will be a unique opportunity for Switzerland to demonstrate the vibrancy of their sustainability industry. UGA looks forward to hosting this event as a way to engage with a vibrant\, international sustainability industry\, display its own research and outreach activities in the area of clean technologies\, and expose faculty and students to fresh ideas and new possibilities. \nOn April 20\, join entrepreneurs and scientists from both Switzerland and the state of Georgia to get exclusive insights on clean technologies that can effectively address today’s challenges!

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Sanjena Sathian's Novel 'Gold Diggers'
DESCRIPTION:How far would you go for a piece of the American dream? \nA magical realist coming-of-age story\, Gold Diggers by Sanjena Sathian skewers the model minority myth to tell a hilarious and moving story about immigrant identity\, community\, and the underside of ambition. \nA floundering second-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs\, Neil Narayan struggles to bear the weight of expectations of his family and their Asian American enclave. He tries to want their version of success\, but mostly\, Neil just wants his neighbor across the cul-de-sac\, Anita Dayal. \nWhen he discovers that Anita is the beneficiary of an ancient\, alchemical potion made from stolen gold—a “lemonade” that harnesses the ambition of the gold’s original owner—Neil sees his chance to get ahead. But events spiral into a tragedy that rips their community apart. Years later in the Bay Area\, Neil still bristles against his community’s expectations—and finds he might need one more hit of that lemonade\, no matter the cost. \nThis event will be held in person at the Atlanta History Center\, but it will also be livestreamed. Woodruff Auditorium is located inside McElreath Hall. Doors and cash bar will open at 6pm. \nAbout the Author\nA Paul and Daisy Soros fellow\, Sanjena Sathian is a 2019 graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. SUMMARY:Book Talk With Eric Kim\, Author of 'Korean American\,' with Jean Kim and Kim Severson
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta History Center for an author talk on “Korean American\,” a cookbook paying homage to what it means to be Korean American\, with delectable recipes that explore how new culinary traditions can be forged to honor both your past and your present. \nNew York Times staff writer Eric Kim grew up in Atlanta\, the son of two Korean immigrants. Food has always been central to his story\, from Friday-night Korean barbecue with his family to hybridized Korean-ish meals for one — like Gochujang-Buttered Radish Toast and Caramelized-Kimchi Baked Potatoes — that he makes in his tiny New York City apartment. In his debut cookbook\, Eric shares these recipes alongside insightful\, touching stories and stunning images shot by photographer Jenny Huang.Playful\, poignant\, and vulnerable\, Korean American also includes essays on subjects ranging from the life-changing act of leaving home and returning as an adult\, to what Thanksgiving means to a first-generation family\, complete with a full holiday menu — all the while teaching readers about the Korean pantry\, the history of Korean cooking in America\, and the importance of white rice in Korean cuisine. Recipes like Gochugaru Shrimp and Grits and Smashed Potatoes with Roasted-Seaweed Sour Cream demonstrate Eric’s prowess at introducing Korean pantry essentials to comforting American classics\, while dishes such as Cheeseburger Kimbap and Crispy Lemon-Pepper Bulgogi do the opposite by tinging traditional Korean favorites with beloved American flavor profiles. Baked goods like Milk Bread with Maple Syrup and Gochujang Chocolate Lava Cakes close out the narrative on a sweet note. \nIn this book of recipes and thoughtful insights\, especially about his mother\, Jean\, Eric divulges not only what it means to be Korean American but how\, through food and cooking\, he found acceptance\, strength\, and the confidence to own his story. \nAbout the Author\nEric Kim is a New York Times staff food writer born and raised in Atlanta\, Georgia. He worked his way through the literary and culinary world to eventually become a digital manager at Food Network and a senior editor at Food52\, where he amassed a devoted readership for his “Table for One” column. He now hosts regular videos on NYT Cooking’s YouTube channel. A former contributing editor at Saveur\, Eric taught writing and literature at Columbia University\, and his work has been featured in The Washington Post\, Bon Appétit\, and Food & Wine. He lives with his rescue pup\, Quentin Compson\, in New York City. \nAbout the Moderator\nKim Severson is a national food correspondent for the New York Times. She was previously the New York Times Southern bureau chief and\, before that\, a staff writer for the Food section. Severson won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for her contributions to the team that investigated sexual harassment and abuse against women. She has also won four James Beard awards and the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism for her work on childhood obesity. She was a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle and before that\, an editor and reporter at the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska. Before dedicating herself to food reporting\, she covered crime\, education\, social services and politics for daily newspapers on the West Coast. She has written four books\, “The Trans Fat Solution\,” “The New Alaska Cookbook\,” a memoir called “Spoon Fed: How Eight Cooks Saved My Life\,” and\, in 2012\, “Cook Fight!” a collaborative cookbook with fellow New York Times writer Julia Moskin.\nShe lives in Atlanta with her fiancé\, teenager and two dogs.\nPromotional language provided by publisher. \n
