SUMMARY:Ambassador Briefing: Pakistan -- Reaching for Reform
DESCRIPTION:Join Global Atlanta and Miller & Martin for a timely discussion with Rizwan Saeed Sheikh\, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States since August 2024\, on investment opportunities as the country of 235 million people reaches for reform. \n\n\n\nDuring his first official visit to Atlanta to meet community leaders and students\, Mr. Saeed will outline the government’s efforts to boost financial inclusion and drive growth through its Uraan Pakistan plan\, which aims to seed 6 percent growth by 2028\, led by export-oriented sectors and in collaboration with the World Bank and other multilateral institutions\, as outlined by the finance minister at the recent World Economic Forum. \n\n\n\nEven amid stalled talks between the government and opposition\, Mr. Saeed will showcase how sectors like energy\, infrastructure\, technology\, mining\, and agriculture offer substantial growth potential\, and how foreign investors from some of the world’s most dynamic economies are seizing opportunities in this key South Asian market. \n\n\n\nViewing Atlanta as a hub for higher education\, he will also explore deeper university collaborations and opportunities for the mutual recognition of degrees and credentials to drive further exchange. A fintech hub\, Atlanta could also play a role in the country’s nascent digitization efforts\, bringing individuals and small businesses into the formal economy and reducing the unbanked population. \n\n\n\nHeld over lunch\, the conversation will also address how Pakistan will work with the new U.S. administration\, manage regional tensions and where it sits in a world increasingly marked by U.S.-China rivalry. \n\n\n\nSee a summary of our last Pakistan briefing: Georgia Now on Pakistan’s Map\, Ambassador Says \n\n\n\nFeatured Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmbassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored & Hosted by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by:

SUMMARY:Fifth Nunn School Symposium: The Dollar's Challenged Role in the World
DESCRIPTION:Since the end of the Second World War the US dollar has played a central role in the global economy. During the 21st century the US government has extensively leveraged the associated importance of the US financial system to secure foreign policy objectives. That activity and concerns about US fiscal responsibility have recently prompted other governments and non-state actors to seek alternatives to the dollar and to the US financial system. SUMMARY:2025 Dunwoody Virtual Great Decisions Lecture Series – U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2025 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 6 – March 27\, 2025 at 7:00 PM. There is a fee to register for the virtual lecture series\, and registration is required to receive the event link. \n\n\n\nTopic: U.S. Changing Leadership of the World Economy \n\n\n\nUnder President Biden\, the U.S. has advanced new ideas about trade\, technology\, industrial policy\, competition with China\, and the organization of the world economy. For most of the postwar era\, the U.S. has tied its global leadership to cooperative agendas aimed at creating a more open-world trading system\, but that has apparently come to an end. What are America’s options and opportunities as a leader of the world economy? How will America’s “foreign policy for the middle class” and strategic competition with China impact its leadership role? How can the postwar rules and institutions of the world economy be made safe for economic nationalism and great power competition? \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Dr. Stephen Collins\, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs\, Kennesaw State University (KSU) \n\n\n\nPlease note\, topics and speakers are subject to change dates. \n\n\n\nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. SUMMARY:Cocktails with A Consul: Navigating the New U.S. Relationship with Canada & Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate conversation with two distinguished diplomats discussing the U.S. relationship with its two largest trading partners\, Canada and Mexico. The panel will explore how Canada and Mexico are preparing for potential 25% tariffs and the future of the US-Mexico-Canada relationship.Cocktails with A Consul: Navigating the New U.S. Relationship with Canada & Mexico \n\n\n\nAbout the event\n\n\n\nWith “tariffs” and “trade” dominating the headlines in 2025\, Americans are revisiting their high school economics lessons to understand the implications. The U.S. threat to impose high tariffs on its largest trading partners could significantly impact Georgia’s economy\, which recorded $25 billion in trade with Mexico and $13.9 billion with Canada in 2024. Key products exchanged between Georgia\, Canada\, and Mexico include civilian aircraft and parts\, motor vehicles\, data processing machines\, telephone sets\, and medical devices. However\, the flow of immigration and fentanyl between these countries has sparked difficult discussions\, echoing American poet Robert Frost’s assertion that “good fences make good neighbors.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more

SUMMARY:Things Fall Apart: Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Kultur Ensemble Atlanta (a collaboration between the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta and the Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta) is excited to present: \n\n\n\nCelebrate the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the Nigerian-American-German movie “Things Fall Apart” in Atlanta and discover the story of the groundbreaking African film\, its deep ties to Atlanta\, the Black film industry\, Black heroes\, Oscar winners\, Civil Rights\, and ATL’s rise as a global city. \n\n\n\nThe son of filmmaker Francis Oladele\, Lanre Oladele\, will be present at the opening and part of a panel discussion on the impact of the novel and the movie in Nigeria\, the USA\, and beyond. \n\n\n\nWHAT TO EXPECT \n\n\n\n6:00 PM open \n\n\n\n7:00 PM reception and speeches \n\n\n\nHOSTS & ORGANIZERS \n\n\n\nKultur Ensemble Atlanta (Goethe-Zentrum & Alliance Francaise of Atlanta) \n\n\n\nModern Film Archives\, Berlin \n\n\n\nCity of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs & Gallery 72 \n\n\n\nCity of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of International & Immigrant Affairs \n\n\n\nGerman Federal Office for Foreign Affairs / Consulate General of Germany in Atlanta \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION DESCRIPTION \n\n\n\nCreated in 1971 in Nigeria\, little was known about the circumstances and the making of the film Things Fall Apart until the images were discovered in the estate of the late film director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition\, a cross-cultural collaboration\, showcases the long lost documents of the making of the film with a collection of still photo prints by accomplished cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt. \n\n\n\nThe film and the exhibition highlight the connection and struggle between Africa and the West\, between generations and cultures\, and also the story of Nigerian-Atlantan collaboration\, the shaping of modern\, global Atlanta and Sister Cities relationships\, the Black film industry\, African royalty\, and ATL-local high-profile changemakers. \n\n\n\nThe 1974 premiere of Things Fall Apart in Atlanta draws direct connections to the election of Maynard Jackson in the same year\, as the Nigerian co-producer\, legendary filmmaker Francis Oladele\, was his brother-in-law. Moreover\, the premiere was directly connected to the founding of the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and the establishment of the Atlanta-Lagos Sister City partnership\, which both celebrated their 50th anniversary just recently. \n\n\n\nHISTORICAL BACKGROUND \n\n\n\nNigerian executive producer Francis Oladele (1932-2015) established Calpenny Nigeria Films Limited – the first independent film production company in Nigeria – in 1965 with the intention of providing a platform for artistic expression in a more profound way and opening the Nigerian arts to an international audience. Oladele succeeded in hiring the American Ossie Davis\, a close friend of Malcom X and very active in the civil rights movement\, as director for this first project. Things Fall Apart\, Oladele‘s second feature film\, is another key part of the beginnings of Nigeria’s Pre-Nollywood movie industry. The film\, made by a few international but mostly local crew members\, was directed by German director Jason Pohland. \n\n\n\nIn Germany\, the film premier triggered a series of official trips to five West African countries immediately afterward expressing the growing importance of German-African partnerships. \n\n\n\nIn the US\, the film premiered a full four years after production in Nigeria due to an apparent difficulty in finding a distributor for the film. \n\n\n\nUnder the patronage of Maynard Jackson\, the first African-American mayor of Atlanta\, the African-American society attended the premiere in 1974. Chinua Achebe and Francis Oladele\, Maynard Jackson’s brother-in-law\, were among the 200+ guests. \n\n\n\nThe photographs in the exhibition show Chinua Achebe on set\, the Ugandan princess\, lawyer and later diplomat Elizabeth of Toro\, who shortly after shooting the film became Uganda‘s foreign minister; the in 1899 in Lagos born actor Orlando Martins – Nigeria‘s first international film star – in his last role as Obierika; John Sekka\, the popular Senegalese actor in the leading role of Obi Okonkwo; co-founder of Lagos Freedom Park Iyabo Aboaba in her role as Bisi. \n\n\n\nOther crew members later made great careers in the film industry: the still photographer Stephen Goldblatt became a director of photography\, shot Batman films and was nominated twice for an Oscar; the assistant editor Alhaji Arulogun became one of Nigeria’s pioneer broadcasters and later headed several ministries for the state government of Oyo State; Ivan Sharrock\, the sound mixer\, won two Oscars. \n\n\n\nASSOCIATED EVENTS \n\n\n\nFilm Screening “Things Fall Apart” \n\n\n\nDate\, time\, and loation TBA \n\n\n\nFollow the Kultur Ensemble to receive notifications about additional events and ticket sales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
