SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: Bridging Franco-American Cultural Differences at Work
DESCRIPTION:Despite the long-standing friendship between the U.S. and France\, the cultural gaps between French and Americans are as different as Coca-Cola and a fine Bordeaux. In today’s fast-paced and complex global environment\, increasing understanding of the impact culture has on communication and work practices is the key to driving harmonious working relationships between the two cultures. This interactive presentation will highlight some of the historical and cultural factors that have shaped the beliefs and values in each country and how they impact behaviors at work. FACC Atlanta members will gain new insights into the main barriers that impede communication and collaboration and learn tips to optimize engagement with their French or American colleagues and clients. \n\n\n\nPresenter \n\n\n\nJulia Gaspar-Bates\, M.A.\, is President of Intercultural Alliances\, LLC (www.interculturalalliances.com) a cross-cultural training and consulting firm based in Washington DC. A British-American\, Julia started her career in Paris\, where she lived and worked for nearly eight years. She has trained thousands of leaders and teams on five continents to help them increase their intercultural sensitivity\, knowledge\, and skills to successfully navigate the complexities and opportunities of working across cultural and geographic borders. Julia is currently co-writing a book with a colleague in Paris on cultural differences between the French and Americans at work\, a journey that has only deepened her awareness of the cultural differences between the two countries and how to best resolve them. Julia holds a Master’s of Arts in Intercultural Relations and spent 10 years teaching at George Washington University. She is also an active member of the FACC Washington DC for whom she has given frequent presentations over the years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Kinoabend: Zwei zu Eins - Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:ZWEI ZU EINS is a larger-than-life comedy about love and friendship\, about money and justice with the Oscar-nominated actress Sandra Hüller and Max Riemelt and Ronald Zehrfeld. \n\n\n\nThe film is an ode to a time in German history when anything and everything seemed possible.Halberstadt in East Germany during the summer of 1990. Maren (Sandra Hüller)\, Robert (Max Riemelt) und Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) have known and loved each other since their childhood days. Pure chance lets them come across a storage facility with Billions of now outdated East German currency – left there to rot. The three friends smuggle backpacks full of money out\, and together with friends and neighbors they develop a plan – a system – to turn the worthless money into household items and other valuables which they use to trick the encroaching capitalism and West-Germans that come with it.Director Natja Brunckhorst based her summer comedy on true events: After the fall of the Berlin Wall and shortly before the German reunification\, millions of East German marks were stored in underground bunkers near Halberstadt\, a small city in the former GDR. In total\, nearly 400 tons of paper money were hidden away during the transition to a unified German currency. It is a fact that some of this money was stolen\, though to this day\, no one knows how much. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets

SUMMARY:Art of Diplomacy Tour of Cuba with Ambassador Charles Shapiro
DESCRIPTION:Curious about Cuba? Ambassador (ret.) Charles Shapiro and Amanda Mattingly are leading a trip to Havana June 12-16\, 2025 to meet with a wide range of Cuban academics\, artists\, small business owners and others to figure out what is going on and how the United States should respond. We will meet with the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Cuba as well as the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (requested). The Cuban economy has been crushed by Covid\, U.S. sanctions and bad governance. In 2021 and 2024\, protests broke out and were repressed by the Cuban government. One thing is sure: the sound bites from the U.S. right and left miss the complexity of Cuba. We will meet in the Havana airport the late morning of Thursday\, June 12 and depart on flights the late afternoon on Monday\, June 16. We will stay in privately owned\, comfortable boutique hotels. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer

SUMMARY:The Future of Warfare: Is the U.S. Military Ready? Webinar with General Philip Breedlove
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program will take place Tuesday\, June 17\, 2025\, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET via Zoom. Expert speakers will be General Philip Breedlove\, former commander of all US and NATO forces in Europe and former U.S. Air Force Deputy Chief of Staff. The program will be moderated by Amb. (ret.) Charles Shapiro. It will conclude with a moderated Q&A session with the audience. It will be streamed live via Zoom. \n\n\n\nTopic Summary: \n\n\n\nThe nature of warfare is evolving rapidly as nations integrate cutting-edge technologies into their military arsenals. Ukraine’s drone strike against Russian bomber bases demonstrates that a smaller\, more innovative force can effectively challenge a larger and better-equipped adversary. Similarly\, during the brief India-Pakistan conflict in May\, Pakistan’s Chinese-built JF-17 fighter jets reportedly performed well against India’s French-made Dassault Rafale aircraft. These developments raise critical questions about how the United States allocates its defense budget. How can we ensure that our military is equipped for the conflicts of tomorrow rather than those of the past? Are drones more strategically valuable than fighter jets? Do main battle tanks and aircraft carriers still have a place on the future battlefield? And just as importantly\, how do we recruit and train the personnel needed to operate increasingly sophisticated systems? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
