SUMMARY:How the Payments Sector is Driving Atlanta Forward
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta’s strength is in its economic diversity\, but the lack of a signature industry cluster can give the impression that it doesn’t lead any one area.\n\nThe city’s Payments Processing industry shows that’s a myth. “Transaction Alley\,” a newly labeled corridor of companies that move 70 percent of electronic payments in the U.S.\, is worth more than 30\,000 jobs to Georgia and is driving growth across the city.\n\nMidtown’s innovation hub is burgeoning with the arrival of giants like Worldpay and NCR and upstarts like ParkMobile. Payments also sits at the intersection other strategic tech sectors: mobility\, cybersecurity and health care IT. This all comes at a time when the smartphone revolutionizes how payments and e-commerce work.\n\nJoin Global Atlanta\, Arnall Golden Gregory and the American Transaction Processors Coalition for a morning program and lunch exploring the biggest industry sector you’ve never heard about.\n\nYou will:\n\n-Explore the anatomy of a payment transaction\n-Hear why Worldpay moved to Midtown and how it approaches innovation\n-Learn how Fintech fits into Atlanta’s plans\n-Gauge the industry’s international opportunity \nSpeakers: \n\nPeter Forbes\, Senior Vice President\, WorldPay\nBlake Patton\, Managing Partner\, Tech Square Ventures\nGrant Wainscott\, Director\, Technology Industry Expansion\, Metro Atlanta Chamber

SUMMARY:Germany's Energy & Climate Policies - Insight From a European Industry Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Join GACC for a luncheon & discussion about “Germany’s Energy & Climate Policies – Insight From A European Industry Perspective”\, presented by Wolfgang Niedermark\, former Vice President and Head of BASF in Berlin\, and incoming Chairman and CEO of German Industry & Commerce Ltd in Hong Kong. \nTopic \nWolfgang Niedermark will take a look at the German energy transformation (Energiewende) from a corporate stance in his talk on “Germany’s Energy & Climate Policies – Insight from a European Industry Perspective.” While German industry does not question the reality of climate change\, German business interests have raised many questions about the emphasis of the current policy on renewables. SUMMARY:A Conversation With Jessica Colotl
DESCRIPTION:Kennesaw State University students will be hosting Jessica Colotl on campus\, for a conversation on her 2010 arrest that made national headlines and sparked the immigration debate. She will be joined by Dr. Marie Marquardt\, of Emory University. \nFollowing the arrest of Ms. Colotl\, in 2011 the Georgia Board of Regents’ implemented Policy 4.1.6 and Policy 4.3.4\, a pair of rules which ban undocumented students from five major public universities in Georgia and prohibit them from qualifying for in-state tuition. Georgia is one of only three states – including Alabama and South Carolina – to institute an admissions ban against undocumented students in public higher education.\n\nThis event will mark the first time Ms. Colotl – now a KSU graduate – speaks publicly on KSU’s campus specifically concerning her experience in 2010 as an undocumented youth and college student here in Georgia. Dr. Marquardt will facilitate the conversation through a series of questions focused on highlighting the human effects of immigration policy. Offering a human-focused counter narrative to the current political rhetoric\, this event explores the heavy toll that restrictive immigration and education policies take on Georgia’s youth.

SUMMARY:Business Seminar: Cross Border Transactions
DESCRIPTION:CLE Credit Opportunity! The Double Deontology Problem – Whose Professional Ethics Rules Apply? \nIn today’s market\, attorneys have to understand cross border transactions to thrive. According to a study by Grant Thornton IBR\, the global average for respondents expecting their acquisitive growth to be cross border was 39%\, a significant number that includes not only developed countries\, but also the emerging nations that have seen a steady increase in their international activities. Other cross border activities\, such as trade\, telecommunications\, and web-based activities\, are also steadily increasing in an increasingly connected and globalized environment. \nAs positive as some of this economic growth can be\, cross border activities also lead to complications as legal teams must consider which sanctions\, money-laundering regimes and anti-corruption laws\, international treaties\, and data privacy laws are at play within each jurisdiction. Additional concerns about conflicts of interest and legal privilege further complicate the issue. This can be an incredibly complex practice area where concrete knowledge and information is critical to success\, but where approaches often differ based on the country and culture where the activities are taking place. \nThe speakers will discuss these issues from an American and European perspective\, comparing and contrasting the different views and attitudes that shape cross border practices in different countries. \nRegistration required. Free admission.

SUMMARY:The International Criminal Court and the Fight Against Atrocity Crimes
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Civil and Human Rights\, in partnership with the Consulate of Liechtenstein\, will host the United Nations representative from Liechtenstein\, Ambassador Christian Wenaweser as an honored speaker. Ambassador Wenaweser will speak about the history\, challenges\, and struggles for prioritizing peace through the International Criminal Court. \nGenocide\, crimes against humanity and war crimes are considered the most serious offenses under international law – and yet\, efforts to hold perpetrators of these crimes accountable have proven often unsuccessful for the last few decades. \nThe ICC aims to fill the existing impunity gap\, not only by putting perpetrators on trial\, but also by giving an incentive to States to investigate and prosecute\, however\, challenges remain. Almost 70 States have not yet joined the Court\, arrest warrants are difficult to enforce\, especially when issued against high level politicians\, and States struggle with the question of prioritizing peace or justice. \nA Q&A Session and Wolfgang Puck catered onsite reception will follow the Ambassador’s presentation.
