SUMMARY:Stories Without an End: Women in African Art
DESCRIPTION:January 18 – April 21\, 2018\nOglethorpe University Museum of Art \nThe exhibition Stories Without an End: Power\, Beauty and Wisdom of Women in African Art of the Mehta Collection includes a selection of 50 classically carved wooden sculptures and masks drawn from the collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta. The exhibition represents art from more than 25 ethnic groups spanning 12 countries. These objects are gathered into thematic groups including women in governance\, maternity\, idealized beauty\, and female ancestors. Stories Without an End was inspired in part by the work of the Grandmother Project (GMP) an American 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and a Senegalese NGO with representatives throughout the USA and abroad. GMP\, with headquarters in Senegal\, works with elders in West African villages to fight the maltreatment of young girls. This exhibition was developed by Elizabeth H. Peterson\, OUMA director\, and organized by Amanda Hellman\, PhD\, curator of African art\, Michael C. Carlos Museum\, Emory University.

SUMMARY:Ultimately Human - Featuring Andrew Young and Ross Rossin
DESCRIPTION:Former ambassador and civil rights icon Andrew Young and renowned portrait artist Ross Rossin\, the Schwartz Artist-in-Residence at Emory University\, will meet for a public conversation\, titled “Ultimately Human\,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, March 27\, at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. \nAdmission is free\, but attendees are asked to register in advance. \nRossin will display onstage many of his extraordinary portraits\, while he and Young use them to reflect on questions of identity\, how it informs our view about others\, the creative process\, artistic meaning and the beauty in diversity. \nYoung served as director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. He was elected to three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives\, was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and served two terms as mayor of Atlanta. Rossin’s photorealistic portrait of Young debuted in 2009. \nThe March 27 program also will feature poet and spoken word performer Tavares Stephens\, and cellist/filmmaker Okorie Johnson\, who performs under the name OkCello. \nRossin’s residency at Emory coincides with FACE\, the Frankenstein Anniversary Celebration at Emory\, a year-long university-wide celebration of the 200th anniversary of the novel\, and is part of the Ethics and the Arts Program at Emory’s Center for Ethics. \nLast fall\, Rossin began his residency and helped launch the Frankenstein bicentennial on campus by unveiling a compelling portrait of a new interpretation of Dr. Frankenstein’s creation\, described by Mary Shelley in her 1818 novel. \nThe event is the first of the newly renamed Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversations\, a series of public conversations on campus highlighting creativity and imagination as essential to every discipline and enterprise. By putting distinguished visiting thinkers and creators in conversation with one another and members of the Emory community\, Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversations give audiences access into the innovative minds and creative processes of leaders in a wide range of fields.

SUMMARY:Cyber Security Challenges Need a Global Approach
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge is power. This old saying determines the current digital paradigm shift. Digital business models and information technology drive innovation and global growth: Around 20\,000 new jobs in Germany every year. Access to data and competitive software coding has become key to market success. Nevertheless\, the overall societal relevance of the digitization predominates its economic potential. Resilient digital architectures and sustainable privacy standards are a fundamental challenge to protect citizens from technology and technology from citizens and itself. Cyber-attacks\, data infringements and mass surveillance challenge these pillars and boosts national security policies around the globe. Particularly\, the internet of things requires higher security standards and innovative regulation to maintain trust within this new technological environment. But how do global policy makers in Europe\, China and USA react? What are their approaches to strengthen security\, privacy and safety while leveraging existing market potentials?

SUMMARY:Exporting Opportunities in Australia
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend a presentation on “Exporting Opportunities in Australia” that will focus on the export opportunities for Georgia exporters in the aerospace\, defense\, processed foods and food processing equipment sectors. This presentation is sponsored by the U.S. Commercial Service and by the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD). \nThe speaker is Doug Hartley\, Commercial Specialist with the U.S. Commercial Service in Canberra\, Australia. Doug works with U.S. companies to help them enter and be successful in the Australian market\, and has a wealth of knowledge regarding market conditions and trends\, as well as growth and promotional opportunities in the above sectors. \nAustralia’s market has many attractive characteristics for U.S. exporters. It is English-speaking\, a close ally\, offers IP protection and has business practices that are similar to those in the U.S. \nIn 2016 Australia was the third largest defense export market for the U.S. In 2017 Georgia ranked 5th among U.S. states in both aerospace and defense/security exports to Australia. \nAustralia is investing AUD 195 billion / USD 150 billion over the next ten years to acquire additional defense capabilities in all areas – land\, air\, sea\, space\, cyber – as well as to dramatically grow its local defense industry. Key defense promotional events include Pacific\, Land Forces and the Avalon Airshows; CivSec\, which targets border security\, disaster response and cyber; and a number of other events focusing on cyber\, defense IT\, and simulation technologies. \nAs regards the food industry\, during the 13-year life of the current U.S. – Australia Free Trade Agreement U.S. food exports to Australia have tripled. In 2017 Australia was the 2nd largest export market for agricultural equipment from the U.S.\, and Georgia was the 6th largest exporting state of agricultural equipment to Australia. In 2017 Georgia was the 12th largest exporting state of agricultural products to Australia. One of the key food industry trade shows in Australia is Fine Food Australia. The show includes a USA Pavilion\, a Commercial Drinks section\, and a large area devoted to food packaging and processing machinery. \nTo register email: tponce@georgia.org
