This public lecture by a leading scholar in the study of contemporary Chinese politics will shed some light on those critical issues between the two largest economies in the world. \nDr. Fei-Ling Wang is a professor of international affairs at Georgia Institute of Technology and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. His most recent book is The China Order: Centralia\, World Empire\, and the Nature of Chinese Power (2017)\, which has been translated into Chinese.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is presented as part of the exhibition “Stories Without an End: Power\, Beauty and Wisdom of Women in African Art of the Mehta Collection” on view through April 21\, 2019. \nDr. Mario Chandler\, Professor of Spanish at OU\, has interests in Medieval and Golden-age Spanish literature with particular emphasis on trans-Atlantic approaches. He has researched the literature\, film\, and cultures related to Afro-Hispanic and Afro-Latino populations\, including Spanish-speaking communities in Africa. In 2016 his text Gazing the Black Star: An African American Contemplates Ghana was published by Hetura Books. Dr. Chandler earned his bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. at The University of Georgia.

Ambassador Githae will speak on the topic\, “Contemporary Issues in Kenya and the African Union.” \nKenya is geo-located in a most challenging area of Eastern Africa\, with neighbors that have been engaged in prolonged civil wars\, or as repositories for terrorists who plague that region. In spite of that challenge\, Kenya has been a long-standing ally of the United States and has sought to maintain economic progress through continued commercial relations with our nation. It has fully cooperated with the United States in coordinated strategic defense policies to engage in anti-terrorist strikes against Al Shabab and al-Qaeda groups in neighboring states. \nWithin the last year\, Kenya has agreed to a $900 Million trade agreement with the United States that will serve to bolster the American and Kenyan economies\, and bring this critically important East African nation even closer to the American political-economic orbit. \nThe maritime area off the long Kenyan coast\, with American military bases thus situated\, becomes even more strategically important due to what may be a growing Cold War with a rising power in Asia\, and its growing interest in East Africa. Kenya has become more important to the United States than ever before. \n

DESCRIPTION:When foreign governments descend into chaos and Americans need immediate evacuation; when American personnel are stricken with highly-infectious and deadly diseases and need to be flown home for treatment\, the U.S. State Department turns to one company: Atlanta-founded and Georgia-based Phoenix Air Group\, Inc. \nIn 2017\, Phoenix Air flew Otto Warmbier home from captivity in North Korea. In 2014\, they transported two Ebola-stricken Americans from Liberia to Atlanta for treatment at Emory Hospital. In March 2019\, Phoenix Air extracted 24 American diplomats and up to “20\,000 lbs. of sensitive cargo” from Venezuela despite never having received landing authority in the country. \nThese missions could have been from a James Bond or Jason Bourne script. But they are real with real consequences and real lives at stake. \nOn Tuesday\, April 9th Phoenix Air’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel Randy Davis — who also happens to be the pilot who flew the Ebola patients out of Liberia — will give Council members an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the world of global government special missions and security operations. \nThis program is for Council members only and has limited registrations. The novel is considered by most to be a spoof of certain religious doctrines that espoused blind optimism despite never-ending catastrophes. GSU Opera Theater’s production is based on the 1989 version that Bernstein conducted at the Tanglewood Festival. CANDIDE had too many lyricists to list\, but it was the original brainchild of top-shelf American dramatist Lillian Hellman. The story\, an allegory about the wanderings of an optimistic young lad faced with overwhelming loss\, is clearly extreme. Keep your eyes and your ears open; CANDIDE is a wild ride! Oh\, and happy birthday Bernstein!
