SUMMARY:16th Annual German Bierfest
DESCRIPTION:The 16th Annual Atlanta German Bierfest is back on Saturday\, August 24th in Woodruff Park in Downtown Atlanta for an incredible day of authentic German beers\, music and food. Festival fans will receive a commemorative sample glass to enjoy unlimited samples of more than 35 authentic German Beers. Atlanta area German restaurants and food vendors will serve up authentic cuisine such as bratwurst\, käsepätzle\, pretzels\, sauerkraut\, schnitzel\, and more! The German Bierfest also features live music and plenty of hands on sports\, activities\, and games. \nAtlanta’s German Bierfest was born out of the simple idea: have a day dedicated to celebrating German Culture with authentic German beer\, food\, and music. With the simple idea to bring a taste of German culture to Atlanta\, the German Bierfest gained popularity over the years and is on the ‘must do’ list for Atlanta festival fans and beer lovers in the Fall. \nStarting out in 2003 in what felt like a backyard get-together with 150 guests and a selection of 16 German beers\, the German Bierfest was born. The team was inspired to grow the event to share it with the City of Atlanta. Throughout the years\, the event has moved to larger locations\, featured more beers and offered more activities. As a result\, attendance numbers have grown every year. \nOver the years\, the festival has become Atlanta’s longest running and coolest beer festival. German Bierfest benefits the German American Chamber of Commerce and is produced by Premier Events\, an Atlanta based event production company that works with the cities top festivals and entertainment venues. The German Bierfest now welcomes thousands of beer enthusiasts to enjoy a day of celebrating all things German at Atlanta’s only authentic\, family-friendly German Bierfest. \n

SUMMARY:Economic Forecasting Conference: Opportunities in the Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:Come join for the August Economic Forecasting Conference at Georgia State University: Opportunities in the Modern Era. \nSpeakers: \n\nRajeev Dhawan\,\n\nProfessor & Director\,  Economic Forecasting Center\nJ. Mack Robinson College of Business\nForecast of the Nation\, State and RegionRajeev Dhawan delivers his keynote presentation on the economic outlook of the United States\, Georgia and the Atlanta Metro Region. Join us as he shares his views on the state of the global economy as well as employment and consumption trends and their impact on industry in Georgia. He will discuss\, in particular\, the implications for residential and commercial real estate in the Atlanta Metro Region.\n\n\nGregory Daco\,\n\nChief US Economist\,  Oxford Economics USA\n“Global Economy: Recession Fears Amidst Rising Trade Tensions”While looser financial conditions and a moderate upturn in the manufacturing sector will be supportive for global growth\, the escalation in US-China trade tensions along with waning fiscal stimulus increase downside risks to growth. Ongoing accommodative monetary policy by the Fed and other major central banks should remain supportive of growth\, but any significant global acceleration looks a tall order. Beyond the short term\, tight labor markets will constrain employment growth while wage growth firms only gradually. This will likely limit the upside to household spending. In this global context\, a re-intensification of US-China trade tensions risks undermining sentiment and investment\, and could push global GDP growth below the post-crisis low of 2.6% in 2016.\n\n\nMichael Drury\,\n\nChief Economist\,  McVEAN Trading & Investments\, LLC\n“Why China Leads the Global Economic Cycle”The global economy has evolved from a group of regional economies interacting through trade to a single global economy dominated by multinational supply chains. In this environment\, China\, as the world’s low cost producer\, has taken the role traditionally associated with the Southeastern US in a US model. Monetary policy shifts in China now matter more for future growth than the Federal Reserve\, and their impact is most clearly seen in Chinese real estate markets as the leader of the global cycle. This model suggests strengthening growth for the world and US in 2019 and 2020 – unless disrupted by the trade war.\n\n\nFrank Norton\,\n\nPresident\,  The Norton Agency\n“Three Georgia’s\, Not Two”Mr. Norton will provide an in depth review of housing conditions and trends in Georgia. Affordability and opportunities across Georgia both in rural and urban markets. Mr. Norton has studied Georgia housing factors and the dynamics of growth as well as the constraints affecting housing development.

SUMMARY:Venezuela from the Inside
DESCRIPTION:As Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó prepare for a new round of negotiations next week\, the Venezuelan economy plummets further into chaos and refugees continue to flee the country en masse. Among the four million Venezuelans who have fled Venezuela over the past four years are an estimated 500 journalists\, including CNN journalist Laura Weffer Cifuentes. The last straw? Not being able to obtain medicine for her family. \nOn Thursday\, August 29 at the law firm of Smith Gambrell and Russell (SGR) in Midtown from 5:45 PM to 7:30 PM\, Laura Weffer will share her unique perspective as a recently exiled Venezuelan journalist now working for CNN en Español in Atlanta. \nYou are invited to hear what is happening on the ground – in Venezuela – not from an outsider looking in\, but from an insider who got out. A Venezuelan who was not only trying to do her job as a journalist under an increasingly repressive government\, but also trying her best to survive.

SUMMARY:The Future of Syria
DESCRIPTION:Peaceful protests in Syria against Bashar Assad’s regime in March\, 2011 brought brutal retaliation then exploded into civil war. That concerned and involved Russia\, Turkey\, Iran\, radical Muslim factions\, Israel\, and America. Syria continues to be a killing field that has left millions dead\, displaced\, or refugees in neighboring countries. Vetoed UN Security Council resolutions are emblematic of the greater failure of all combatants to find a path to peace. With no end in sight\, when does the killing stop? \nACIR is honored to host Hrair Balian\, Director\, Conflict Resolution Program at The Carter Center\, who will address this in his presentation “The Future of Syria.” \nBalian joined The Carter Center in 2008 as director of the Conflict Resolution Program. He also served as an adjunct professor at the Emory University Law School from 2008 to 2017\, teaching an advanced international negotiations seminar. \nSince 1991\, Balian has worked in the Balkans\, Eastern Europe\, the independent states emerging from the former Soviet Union\, the Middle East\, and Africa\, serving in intergovernmental organizations (the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) and nongovernmental organizations (International Crisis Group and others). He has worked on elections\, human rights\, and conflict resolution. \nBalian received his Juris Doctor degree from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. In May 2009\, the New England College awarded him the degree of Doctor of Laws\, honoris causa\, for his “lifetime commitment to the dignity\, respect\, and self-determination of all peoples” and for his “uncompromising effort to resolve international conflicts.” \nHe is fluent in English\, French\, and Armenian\, with a basic knowledge of Arabic. He was born and raised in Lebanon\, moving to the United States for university studies.

SUMMARY:Innovating International Education feat. Welsh Minister of Education
DESCRIPTION:Come join for a Breakfast Discussion featuring Kirsty Williams\, Welsh Minister for Education and Skills & Mark Becker\, President of Georgia State University. \nForget the iPad and Oregon Trail: education has changed. According to McKinsey\, by 2030\, a decade from now\, more than half of all jobs will be automated and machines will do these jobs more efficiently than people. The challenge is for education to adapt to this new reality. \nIt is necessary to rethink education. Leveraging innovation is key in preparing students for this new world. Students must not only acquire up-to-date technical and digital skills\, but also vital human skills. Leadership\, global awareness and emotional intelligence will be the keys to enabling students to thrive in a world which we can only try to predict. \nIn Wales\, where universities enjoy the highest rate of student satisfaction across all of the UK publicly-funded schools\, major reforms are reducing class sizes\, developing international partnerships\, and increasing digital competence and literacy standards. \nCome join for a breakfast with the woman leading these reforms in Wales\, Minister Kirsty Williams\, Welsh Minister for Education and Skills\, in conversation with the president of Georgia State University\, Mark Becker\, as they discuss innovation in education\, the role of education in international relations\, and how Williams built partnerships and coalitions as an opposition politician.

SUMMARY:Germanic Language & Dialect Series: Hessisch
DESCRIPTION:Ei gude! Horschemool! Kumm\, mer lerne (mit de Susanne) Hessisch babbele! \nGerman leaners across the globe have had the experience of traveling abroad and realizing the German they learned in the classroom is not necessarily the German they hear among native speakers. Why is that? There are numerous dialects throughout all of the German-speaking countries\, and even within a variety\, there can be several other subcategories. This Germanic Language and Dialect Series will present derivatives of the standard variety also known as “Hochdeutsch.” Native speakers and language experts will provide background information\, historical context\, and numerous examples. It will be a fun\, interactive afternoon as each session will explore a new dialect in Germany\, Austria\, and Switzerland. \nPlease join Susanne Schurmann as she opens the series with HESSISCH! \nMembers $10\, Non-Members $20
