SUMMARY:Navigating a New Era: Philippines-U.S. Partnership in the Post-COVID World
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Conversation with Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez. \n\nThe Philippines has enacted one of the world’s strictest lockdowns to fight COVID-19\, dampening growth in a dynamic economy of 100 million people that has seen services and e-commerce take off but has lagged its neighbors as a manufacturing source and tourism hub. \nThe uncertainty has led the country to hone its complex position in Southeast Asia and the world. Under President Rodrigo Duterte\, the Philippines has steadily warmed to China even as it challenges the latter’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Meanwhile\, plans to terminate the presence of U.S. troops in the country have been delayed during the pandemic\, offering hope for a recalibration of the relationship. \nJoin Global Atlanta\, in partnership with the Atlanta Council on International Relations\, for an exclusive conversation with Jose Manuel Romualdez\, Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States\, to discuss the Philippines’ response to COVID-19\, its plans win over foreign investors and efforts to navigate a new era of Pacific partnerships during a time of global turmoil. \nIn partnership with Atlanta Council on International Relations. \n \nAbout H. E. Jose Manuel G. Romualdez\nAmbassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America \nJose Manuel “Babe” del Gallego Romualdez was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the United States of America in July 2017 by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. On 29 November 2017\, he presented his credentials to US President Donald J. Trump and formally assumed office as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Additionally\, as the head of the Philippine Embassy in Washington\, D.C.\, Ambassador Romualdez is concurrently the Philippines’ emissary to the Commonwealth of Jamaica\, Republic of Haiti; Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; Antigua and Barbuda; Bahamas; Barbados; Dominica; Saint Kitts and Nevis; Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; and Saint Lucia. \nPrior to his appointment\, Ambassador Romualdez was designated as a special envoy of the Philippine President to the United States. He also served as a member of several Philippine business delegations visiting the United States\, China\, Japan and New Zealand from 1989 to 2012. \nAmbassador Romualdez has extensive experience as a media practitioner and business executive. He used to be the Chief Executive Officer of Stargate Media Corporation and Publisher of People Asia Magazine (The Philippine Star affiliate). He was president of the Manila Overseas Press Club and vice-president of Rotary Club of Manila. \nAmbassador Romualdez writes columns for The Philippine Star. All his columns have a wide following of readers both in the Philippines and abroad. \nBorn and raised in Manila\, Ambassador Romualdez received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from De La Salle College in 1970. SUMMARY:Les Nuits de l’Alliance Française
DESCRIPTION:La Nuit de la chansson.\n\nGuest: Gad Kabla\,  journalist\, French music and variety specialist. \nMeet the host: Martine Tartour-Levi\n\nMartine Tartour Levi is an award-winning French journalist who lives in Atlanta with her husband\, Yoel Levi.  She writes about art\, culture\, travel\, and current events for the Jewish Times. She was Chef de projet at  Marie Claire Group in Paris\, and Deputy editor of French Cosmopolitan. She wrote « Portraits d’Atlanta » at Hikari Editions. For each « Nuit » she will host a guest who will share their expertise on the topic of that Nuit\, and help answer your questions in order to make this a meaningful cultural evening for our Atlanta francophone community.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Thrills\, Chills & Spills: Developments in the Russian Arctic
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Thomas Rotnem\, Associate Directory & Professor of Political Science at Kennesaw State University\, will present a webinar on: “Thrills\, Chills & Spills: Developments in the Russian Arctic.”\nAbout the event: \nThe continued warming of the Far North brings with it numerous problems and opportunities for Arctic Ocean littoral states. Russia’s concerns in the Arctic are long-standing and perhaps most developed among those countries. This webinar will focus upon Russia’s most recent endeavors and investments there\, while also discussing some of the unique challenges that the warming climate and Covid-19 have posed for Russia’s Arctic regions \nAbout Dr. Rotnem: \nDr. Rotnem is a professor of political science in Kennesaw State University’s Department of Political Science & International Affairs. Having come to the department in Fall 2015\, he teaches courses in comparative politics and international relations. \nAt his previous university\, he received the Teacher of the Year award (2011-2012); before that\, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award twice (in 2001 and 2010)\, was nominated for the award in 2005\, and was awarded the Student Government Association’s Faculty of the Year award in 2007. \nDr. Rotnem earned dual B.A. degrees in Political Science and International Studies and an M.A. in Political Science from Ohio University. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Ohio State University\, as well as a Graduate Certificate as Specialist in Russian Area Studies. In addition\, since coming to Georgia\, he has earned a M.B.A. (in Finance) from Georgia State University. \nHis concentrations within political science are in comparative politics and international political economy\, with a specialization in Russian domestic and foreign politics. His research has focused special attention upon the democratization and “resource curse” literatures in comparative politics and international political economy. He has published papers and articles on a variety of subjects\, including social welfare policies in transitioning economies\, foreign direct investment in emerging markets\, and the politics of oil and natural gas in resource-rich petro-states. Dr. Rotnem has most recently published a chapter in an edited volume on Sino-Russian engagement in Northeast Asia\, a region of particular and on-going interest in his work. \nReceiving grants from a variety of sources has enabled Dr. Rotnem to carry on much of the aforementioned scholarly work. In the past\, he has received grants and/or fellowships from the U.S. Department of State\, the U.S. Department of Education\, the Social Science Research Council\, the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX)\, the American Council for Collaboration in Education and Language Study/American Council for Teachers of Russian (ACCELS/ACTR)\, and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies. \nDr. Rotnem has presented his research at conferences and symposia in the United States and abroad. Two of particular formative significance for him were week-long symposia under the auspices of the Salzburg Seminar that focused upon U.S. foreign policy in Northeast Asia and Russia’s future political development. Another exceptionally formative experience for him was that as a Fulbright Lecturing Award recipient in 2010\, an experience that allowed him to engage and interact with international students and scholars in Eastern Europe. \nBeyond his teaching and research interests\, Dr. Rotnem has recently served as the President of the Georgia Political Science Association (GPSA)\, the second-largest statewide political science organization in the United States. Dr. Rotnem also served as one of two Editors-in-Chief of Questions in Politics\, a refereed publication of the GPSA.

This virtual event will honor and commemorate the life and legacy of the late Honorable John Robert Lewis\, civil rights leader\, statesman\, and advocate for coalition-building among African Americans and Jewish communities. \nPrior to the virtual dialogue\, participants will have 48 hours to view the film online using a FREE custom access code. \nAbout the film: \nThe crucial historical lessons of Black-Jewish cooperation are revisited and revived in this utterly fascinating\, urgent call to action. \nThe modern alliance between African-Americans and Jewish Americans dates to the NAACP founding in 1909. Since then\, both groups have endured segregation and racism\, from the codified bigotry of southern Jim Crow laws\, to blatant bias in real estate\, employment\, higher education and politics. \nCommon cause was found in the turbulent ‘60s Civil Rights era\, as Jewish leaders backed Dr. King’s efforts at racial equality and harmony. Yet\, the relationship has frayed in recent years\, as a once mighty bond of support and respect has seemingly faded\, been forgotten or ignored. \nPivotal events come alive through a treasure trove of archival materials\, narrated by eyewitnesses\, activists\, Holocaust survivors\, and leaders of the movement\, including prominent Atlantans such as Congressman John Lewis\, Amb. Andrew Young\, Rabbi Alvin Sugarman\, Rabbi Peter S. Berg\, Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr.\, members of the King family\, and many others. \nWith divisive seeds of hate taking root anew in the American landscape\, a new generation also affirms their pledge to actively promote the values of social justice. This potent\, inspiring story of unity\, empathy and partnership validates the ubiquity of the human experience\, and how freedom and equality for all can be achieved only when people come together.

SUMMARY:Les Nuits de l'Alliance Française
DESCRIPTION:La Nuit du fromage.\n\nGuest: Florence Hernandez\, journalist. She writes about wine\, and cheese. On va apprendre comment.
