SUMMARY:US-China Engagement: Past Achievements & Future Adjustments
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD) and The Carter Center invite you to join their US-China Engagement: Past Achievements & Future Adjustments webinar. \n2021 marks the 42nd anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between China and the United States. There have been ups and downs in the bilateral relationship\, but the comprehensive engagement between Washington and Beijing in the past four decades has served as an anchor for global peace and prosperity. However\, more recently\, in response to the rise of China and its perceived aggressive expansion in trade\, technology\, and global influence\, what began as a “pivot” to Asia by the U.S. has increasingly become an effort to contain and decouple from China. Engagement policy was declared dead by top American officials. The bilateral relationship is under significant stress. Against this backdrop\, the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD) and The Carter Center have decided to organize an online dialogue for prominent Chinese and American experts to reflect on the significance of the past bilateral engagement and how to influence the future realignment of the relationship. \nSpeakers:\nCraig Allen is the sixth President of the United States-China Business Council (USCBC)\, a private\, nonpartisan\, nonprofit organization representing over 200 American companies doing business with China. Prior to joining USCBC\, Craig had a long\, distinguished career in US public service. In 1995\, Craig was assigned to the US Embassy in Tokyo\, where he served as a Commercial Attaché. From 2000\, Craig served a two-year tour at the National Center for APEC in Seattle. While there\, he worked on the APEC Summits in Brunei\, China\, and Mexico. In 2002\, it was back to Beijing\, where Craig served as the Senior Commercial Officer. In Beijing\, Craig was promoted to the Minister Counselor rank of the Senior Foreign Service. After a four-year tour in South Africa\, Craig became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia at the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. SUMMARY:Night of Ideas-Closing the Distance: Masks\, from Paleolithic Times to Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:The Institut Français\, Paris\, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US invite you to virtually attend “Masks\, from Paleolithic Times to Covid-19\,” part of their Night of Ideas marathon. In this event\, Lauren Tate Baeza\, Curator of African Art at the High Museum\, and Professor Robert Barsky discuss the value of art as an engine for social change \nBoth speakers will engage in a wide-ranging conversation about the value of art as an engine for social change and a medium for a rich and textured understanding of history. The theme of masks was explored through a fascinating discussion about the production and consumption of African masks which\, as Baeza made clear\, are often far from the exoticized and ‘authentic’ constituents of African performances or rituals\, and closer to material commodities produced to satisfy the expectations and mistaken preconceptions of the colonizer. \nSpeakers:\nLauren Tate Baeza\, the Fred and Rita Richman Curator of African Art at the High Museum \nLauren Tate Baeza joined the High Museum of Art in November 2020 as the Fred and Rita Richman Curator of African Art. Previously\, she served as director of exhibitions at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. \n  \n \nProfessor Robert Barsky\, Vanderbilt University \nRobert Barsky’s multidisciplinary research combines social justice\, human rights\, border and refugee studies with literary and artistic insights into the plight of vulnerable migrants. He has published widely\, and his books on undocumented migrants\, refugees\, and the milieus of Noam Chomsky and Zellig Harris have been translated into 14 languages. He has also been actively involved in several national and international research projects\, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council\, and the governments of Canada\, Québec\, Belgium\, France\, and the Dutch Royal Academy. \n  \nNight of ideas is a 24-hour virtual marathon event featuring philosophical debate and artistic performances produced in 75 countries around the world. It is coordinated by the Institut Français\, Paris\, and co-produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US. \n

SUMMARY:Night of Ideas-Closing the Distance: To "Speak" Like A Bird
DESCRIPTION:The Institut Français\, Paris\, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US invite you to virtually watch a film\, as part of their Night of Ideas marathon. In this event\, you will discover the wonderful world of language and interaction with birds. \nOriginally from the Baie de Somme\, Jean Boucault and Johnny Rasse discovered a rare passion for birds during their childhood. Today\, recognized as the greatest imitator of bird songs\, Jean Boucault uses an imitation technique of birds sounds to communicate with birds in the Somme Bay. He « speaks » bird with them.  This film was shot in the Somme Bay\, in the Picardie région of France\, and filmed by Stéphanie Boulard  \n  \nJean Boucault is a French bird singer born in northern France. Together with Johnny Rasse\, they are the Chanteurs d’oiseaux (Bird Singers)\, universally recognized as the greatest human imitators of birdsong. Their technique harks back to the very first attempts at song and incorporates breath voicing\, diphonics\, aspirated voicing\, trilled singing\, high and low-pitched whistling\, and percussive singing. Boucault’s repertoire extends to thousands of different birdsong across five continents. Chanteurs d’oiseaux’s last project is a musical voyage with Charles Darwin.  \n  \nStéphanie Boulard is Associate Professor of French Literature and Visual Arts at Georgia Tech (Atlanta). Her research focuses on literary criticism and word and image relations from the nineteenth century to the contemporary period. She has published extensively on the works of contemporary French writers\, exploring different links and perspectives between the readable and the visible and between poetry and philosophical thought on topics such as migration and exile; (auto)portrait\, identity and singularity; violence and myths in contemporary French literature. \n  \nNight of ideas is a 24-hour virtual marathon event featuring philosophical debate and artistic performances produced in 75 countries around the world. It is coordinated by the Institut Français\, Paris\, and co-produced by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US. \n
