Angela’s career started in the private sector leading business development for organizations like Viacom and Nokia. SUMMARY:The Flavors of Peru: Origin Stories from Peruvian Chocolate Makers
DESCRIPTION:In 2012\, Peru secured its reputation as a fine cacao destination as the craze for its Piura blanco bean spread across North America and Europe. In the decade since the world has been able to appreciate the unique richness of Peru’s cacao on a more local level thanks to the skill of the ever-growing ranks of Peruvian chocolate makers. \nEach Peruvian chocolate maker has a unique story. For some\, cacao came to them as an alternative crop to illicit coca growing. For others\, working with cacao is a tradition passed down across generations. For all\, cacao is their medium of choice for sharing their world with those who try their chocolates. We are excited to share a collection of their stories with you\, as well as the story of El Cacaotal\, the first space dedicated to Peruvian cacao and chocolate in Lima\, Peru. \nAmanda Jo Wildey of El Cacaotal will highlight the trials and tribulations of Carmen de Siancas from Scrap & Chocolates\, Alex Gamarra and Dayanna Huamán from Miroshnik\, and Virgilio Garcia\, leader of the Pangoa Cooperative. \nFor this webinar\, 3 Peruvian chocolate makers are sharing their journey with Peru’s unique cacao diversity: \nCarmen de Siancas from Scrap & Chocolates scours her native Piura for different cacaos worthy of a special edition appearance in her nano-batch collection. \nAlex Gamarra and Dayanna Huamán from Miroshnik have elevated the cacao that grows on their family’s farm in Ayacucho from anonymity to chocolate rockstar status. \nVirgilio Garcia leads the flavor development and chocolate-making area of the Pangoa Cooperative to showcase the expertise of its farmer associates\, from tree to bar. \nThe Peruvian chocolates from these chocolate-makers will be available for purchase as an exclusive tasting box edition from El Cacaotal’s website. \nEmpowering Chocopreneurs© Webinar: \nTopic: The Flavors of Peru: Origin Stories from Peruvian Chocolate Makers\nPresenter: Amanda Jo Wildey of El Cacaotal\, Peru\nDate: Saturday\, May 22\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Atlanta time (GMT-5)

SUMMARY:Arcadias: A Conversation with Emmanuelle Bayamack-Tam and Lauren Groff
DESCRIPTION:Diving into literary arcadias on the 150th anniversary of the Commune. \nJoin the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and Emory University for Ideas and Ideals: Strong Female Voices\, a monthly online gathering exploring how we redefine power\, consent\, and submission. \nModerated by Katy Waldman. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam makes her English-language debut with Arcadia\, a mind-blowing manifesto for the abolition of sexual\, geographical and even literary frontiers… At the tender age of six\, Farah moves into a community in harmony with nature. Its spiritual leader preaches equality\, non-violence\, anti-speciesism\, and uninhibited desire for all\, regardless of gender\, age\, looks\, or ability. At fifteen\, Farah learns she is intersex\, and begins to explore her own desires beyond the confines of gender. What\, Farah asks\, is a man or a woman? What does it mean to be part of a community? What is utopia when there are refugees seeking shelter who cannot enter? \nLauren Groff is the author of another Arcadia\, this one set in the fields and forests of western New York State in the late 1960s. Several dozen idealists set out to live off the land\, founding a commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion. Arcadia follows a lyrical\, rollicking\, tragic\, and exquisite utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday and beyond. \nAs their characters subvert contemporary conceptions of normative sexuality\, capitalist culture\, and environmental destruction\, our speakers ponder whether utopias are doomed by definition. They’ll ask what kind of dreams can be fathomed\, what borders redefined what bounds or relations amended. \nEmmanuelle Bayamack-Tam has published twelve novels and two plays with P.O.L\, including three novels under the pseudonym Rebecca Lighieri. She is a founding member of the interdisciplinary association Autres et Pareils and co-director of Éditions Contre-Pied. Arcadia\, won the Prix du Livre Inter. It was shortlisted for the Prix Femina\, the Prix Médicis\, and Prix de Flore. (Translation by Ruth Diver for Seven Stories Press) \nLauren Groff is the author of The Monsters of Templeton (Hachette)\, Delicate Edible Birds (Hachette)\, and Arcadia (Hyperion Books)\, a New York Times Notable Book\, winner of the Medici Book Club Prize\, and finalist for the L.A. Times Book Award. Her novel\, Fates and Furies (Riverhead Books)\, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the Kirkus Award and was a New York Times Notable book and Bestseller. Her Florida (Riverhead Books) was a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2017\, she was named by Granta Magazine as one of the Best of Young American Novelists of her generation. \nKaty Waldman is a staff writer at The New Yorker\, where she writes about books\, literature\, and more. Previously\, she was a staff writer at Slate and the host of the “Slate’s Audio Book Club” podcast. She won the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing in 2019 and the American Society of Magazine Editors Award for journalists younger than thirty in 2018. \nThis series\, organized by the Cultural Services Book Department is made possible through the support of the Institut Français\, Paris.

DESCRIPTION:The telecommunications industry is poised for significant growth across the Caribbean as local governments and private entities expand their interest in redeveloping their legacy telecommunications systems with an eye towards 5G deployment and other ICT initiatives. \nNext-generation telecommunications systems are being increasingly seen as an essential component to economic development in the 21st century\, and many governments\, including the United States\, consider these next-generation networks vital to their national security. Safe\, secure\, and transparent networks will be essential to next-generation telecom development and will provide new opportunities for interested U.S. companies in a variety of use case scenarios. \nIn the Dominican Republic\, one of the largest economies in the region\, upgrading the country’s telecommunications industry has been a central goal for President Abinader’s administration. \n\nIn February 2021\, President Abinader publicly stated that by 2022\, the GoDR will have invested over 30 million dollars of public funds into the telecommunications sector\, including in key investments like 5G and the transition from analogue to digital television.\nThe government also announced plans to build 5\,000 free Wi-Fi spots in public parks\, squares\, and hospitals. This means industries and companies throughout the country will be looking to upgrade their ICT processes and platforms in all aspects of their operations. This will present opportunities for software companies\, fintechs\, cybersecurity firms\, and a wide variety of upstream and downstream ICT-related firms that can facilitate the country’s digital transformation.\nPresident Abinader\, shortly after his inauguration\, also announced that Chinese investments will not be allowed in strategic sectors\, specifically mentioning ports\, airports\, and telecommunications\, which could lead to new opportunities for U.S. companies to provide 5G-related equipment\, like core network and radio access components such as base stations and antenna arrays\, among other downstream products.\nThe recently published 5G tender (005-2021) for spectrum auction (with a winner announced in Q4 2021) will also provide insight into future telecom opportunities and developments in the DR for US companies.\n\nJoin the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Trade Americas Team for an in-depth discussion of the future of telecommunications in the Dominican Republic and the opportunities these developments might provide for US companies. Guest speakers will include: \n\nRobert W. Thomas\, Chargé d’Affaires – US Embassy in Santo Domingo\nCary Ingram\, Senior International Trade Specialist\, Telecommunications Technologies – US Department of Commerce\nLuis Scheker\, Director of Fair Competition – INDOTEL (Dominican Institution of Telecommunications)\, Dominican Republic
