SUMMARY:Efrén Olivares in conversation with Laura Rivera - My Boy Will Die of Sorrow
DESCRIPTION:The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and A Cappella Books welcome author and Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center Efrén C. Olivares to The Carter Center for a discussion on his new book\, “My Boy Will Die of Sorrow: A Memoir of Immigration From the Front Lines” on Wednesday July 27\, 2022\, at 7 PM. The author will appear in conversation with Laura Rivera\, director of SPLC’s Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI). \nThis deeply personal perspective from a human rights lawyer—whose work on the front lines of the fight against family separations in South Texas intertwines with his own story of immigrating to the United States at thirteen—reframes the United States’ history as a nation of immigrants but also a nation against immigrants. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the venue. Masks are optional. \n  \nAbout the Author\nEfrén C. Olivares is the Deputy Legal Director of the Immigrant Justice Project at Southern Poverty Law Center. He was the lead lawyer in a successful landmark petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on behalf of families separated under the Zero Tolerance policy. He previously directed the Racial and Economic Justice Program at the Texas Civil Rights Project. His writings on immigration policy have also been published by the New York Times\, USA Today\, and Newsweek\, and he has testified before Congress and at briefings on Capitol Hill about immigration and border policies. Part of his work representing separated families was featured in the CBS News documentary “The Faces of Family Separation\,” released in October 2019. He has also been interviewed as an expert attorney on immigrants’ rights issues on numerous TV and radio shows\, and was featured in John Legend’s “Can’t Just Preach” series. \nOlivares was the first member of his family to attend college. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School. \n  \nAbout the Conversation Partner\nFor the past decade\, Laura Rivera has worked in partnership with immigrant and BIPOC communities in the South to advance and defend their legal and human rights. She has contributed to the movement to end the detention of immigrants by litigating class action cases against government agencies and directing a program that provides direct representation to detained immigrants in removal proceedings\, the Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center. She has also represented farmworkers in wage theft and trafficking cases as part of the Farmworker Division of the Georgia Legal Services Program.  Laura is committed to practicing community lawyering\, centering directly impacted people in her work\, and building coalitions. Previously\, Laura worked as a journalist in New York and Puerto Rico. Laura is a proud native of Puerto Rico and is fluent in Spanish. She lives in Decatur with her wife and dogs and enjoys spending time with her family\, hiking\, and cooking.

SUMMARY:Treat Culture Like a Product Because Your People Are Its Customers
DESCRIPTION:Join the Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce to hear Vince Bakshani\, Coach to Entrepreneurs thru EOS Worldwide on the topic\, “Treat Culture Like a Product Because Your People Are Its Customers.” \n  \nTopic Overview:\nIf Dharmesh Shah could start HubSpot over again\, he would have made investments in culture sooner. Come join Vince Bakshani\, Professional EOS Implementer®\, as he enumerates some of the ways culture is a product\, and how you can make an investment in your culture by implementing a simple\, easy to use tool called The People Analyzer™. \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nVince’s passion for entrepreneurship began at home. From a young age\, he felt the vulnerability and triumph of operating a company. Vince’s professional goal was to join the family textile business started by his father\, who originally immigrated from India. He immersed himself in this vocation and eventually earned a degree from Babson College\, a school known for entrepreneurship. \nBut then Vince’s family business went bankrupt\, and he had to reevaluate his future.\nIn hindsight\, many of the tools Vince used in his career were similar in nature to EOS\, so he knows they work. Today\, implementing EOS is Vince’s way of doing for others what he wished someone would’ve done for his family business—providing the guidance\, encouragement\, and resources to optimize the business and enjoy life as an entrepreneur. \n  \nCost of Attendance: Members: Free\, Non-Members $15.00 (included heavy hors d’oeuvres and one drink)

SUMMARY:German Bierfest
DESCRIPTION:German Bierfest is Atlanta’s longest-running and coolest beer festival. Atlanta’s German Bierfest started in 2003 out of a simple idea: create a day to showcase and celebrate German culture with authentic German beer\, food\, and music. When it started it felt like a backyard get-together with 150 guests and a selection of 16 German beers. The event was a hit\, and the founding team was inspired to grow the event and share it with the City of Atlanta. Throughout the years\, German Bierfest moved to larger locations to accommodate growing crowds\, more beers\, and activities. Today German Bierfest is on the ‘must-do’ list of Atlanta’s late summer festivals attracting thousands of festival fans and beer lovers each year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the GACC-SE on Saturday\, August 20th for the next edition of German Bierfest at Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark in the City of Atlanta. SUMMARY:Aprio Webinar: CHIPS & Inflation Reduction Acts: Understanding the Tax Implications & Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Two major pieces of legislation\, the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act and the Inflation Reduction Act\, are once again changing the tax landscape. \nJoin Aprio for a webinar to learn what the CHIPS and Inflation Reduction Acts could mean for you and your business going forward. Our Tax Services team will discuss how: \n– The Inflation Reduction Act focuses on climate and healthcare\, with incentives covering activities like the development of clean energy\, energy-efficient improvements to commercial buildings\, consumer adoption of energy-efficient technologies and caps for Medicare drug costs. Incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act are funded from the much-discussed Global Minimum tax which applies to companies with $1 billion in annual earnings\, and increased funding for the IRS. \n– The CHIPS Act offers a variety of incentives to spur domestic capabilities to manufacture semiconductors. With incentives ranging from training to manufacturing of both chips and the supplies required for chip production\, this bill offers opportunities for a wide range of US businesses.
