SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: Oceania
DESCRIPTION:Join Georgia State University CIBER for International Business Webinar Series “Oceania: International Business\, geopolitics and engaging with the ocean of our future” \n  \nDescription:  \nThe Pacific Ocean is our planet’s single biggest feature. If western civilization was shaped by the Mediterranean Sea\, and industrialization and hyper-globalization were marked by the Atlantic Ocean\, it is clear that an important part of our future will play out in the Pacific\, in environmental\, security and economic terms. With the Indo-Pacific becoming a new epicenter of world affairs\, a new kind of 21st century “Great Game” is taking place among global superpowers in the South Pacific. Home to fewer than 13 million inhabitants\, yet covering 15% of the world’s surface\, the South Pacific Island nations have been\, for a long time\, seen as “simply a bunch of small remote islands”\, marred by the triple tyranny of colonial history\, remoteness and size. Capturing human imagination and sparking geopolitical discourse for centuries\, going back to James Harrington’s utopian commonwealth of Oceana (1656)\, the South Pacific remains one of the “neglected locations” within the international business discipline\, despite its growing security\, economic and environmental relevance. \n  \nModerator\nMatt Raskovic\nAuckland University of Technology\, New Zealand and Vice-President Marketing at the Australia and New Zealand International Business Academy (ANZIBA)\n\nPanelists\nProfessor Damon Salesa\nVice-Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology\, New Zealand and an expert on the South Pacific\n\nProfessor Arun Elias\nDean of the College of Business\, Hospitality and Tourism Management\, Fiji National University\, Fiji\n\nProfessor Elizabeth L. Rose\nResearch Chair in Business Policy & Strategy\, Indian Institute of Management Udaipur\, India and Founding Chair of the Academy of International Business Australia and New Zealand Chapter (now AIB Oceania)

Such a showcase will demonstrate the range of flamenco that is enjoyed in Spain and other major U.S. cities\, during flamenco festivals that have been in production for over 20 years. This festival not only brings an influx of flamenco artists to Atlanta\, but it provides an anchor for this art form in the South\, as no other city in this region presents a flamenco festival. \nThe Atlanta Flamenco Festival will provide arts and culture programming to enhance the knowledge of people of all ages in metro-Atlanta so that they may experience new perspectives in flamenco\, Spanish history\, U.S. Civil Rights\, and personal emotional expression. \nIn 2022\, the festival features two performances by Isaac Tovar and his company on Sept. 10\, 2022\, and another performance by La Macarena de Jerez on Sept. 20\, 2022. Artists will also teach classes while in Georgia. See more details at http://www.atravearts.com

SUMMARY:Traces: A Speech to African Nations -- A One-Man Theatrical Performance in French with English Supertitles
DESCRIPTION:An exceptional storyteller\, Étienne Minoungou stands alone against the world\, determined to talk to it. He speaks to give voice to the life he went through after leaving Africa to come back with a message of hope. He embodies the philosophical and poetic thought of Felwine Sarr\, who wrote this Speech to African nations like a vast odyssey\, a metaphorical journey towards a luminous engagement. His continent looking at itself and at the world\, in service to the future of youth. A text propelled like an experience built through constant dialogue and sharing between the stage and the audience\, to the rhythm of the actor’s powerful voice and of Simon Winse’s evocative music. A conquest that is yet to come\, written in both the past and present tense\, in the singular and the plural. This theatrical performance tour also includes Princeton University and Duke University. A post-show panel will follow the performance\, presented in collaboration with Georgia State University’s Center for Studies on Africa and its Diaspora (CSAD). \nPresented with the support of FACE Foundation\, Villa Albertine\, Consulate General of France in Atlanta\, Alliance Française Atlanta\, and Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta.

SUMMARY:Flamenco Concert by La Macarena de Jerez
DESCRIPTION:Direct from Spain\, the exceptional Macarena de Jerez visits Atlanta to perform flamenco singing and dance in the style of her hometown of Jerez de la Frontera. She is a festera – one of the only women in this role in the art form. In this role\, she uses song and dance to create humor and excitement on stage. She will be accompanied by Paco Fernández on guitar\, who learned the many aspects of flamenco while growing up in a family of artists in Seville\, Spain. The two will be joined by participants of the APERTURE residency\, a program to amplify flamenco arts in Georgia. Together\, they present flamenco in its tradition of improvisation\, building on the action and reaction by those on stage and in the audience. \n  \nAbout the Artists: \nFlamenco singer and dancer La Macarena de Jerez is one of the most well-respected artists in flamenco across Spain. She is known for singing the grand songs of the flamenco canon\, as well as for being one of the few females in the role of festera – a character who uses song and dance to create humor and excitement on stage. She debuted on stage at age 10 at the famous Villamarta Theater in her hometown of Jerez de la Frontera\, Spain. At 15\, she performed her first solo concert at la Peña Los Cernícalos in the same city\, and she was on stage in the important festival named the Bienal de Sevilla when she was 18 years old. She has since performed in major theaters and festivals across Spain and around the world. In addition\, she has been recorded on flamenco albums\, including Concierto Flamenco de Navidad (1995)\, Jerez Joven por bulerías (1996)\, and La Mujer y el cante en compás de origen (1999). \nFlamenco guitarist Paco Fernández is part of a famous and important flamenco family in Seville\, Spain. He began playing guitar when he was eight years old. His career as a performing artist developed alongside his sister\, brother\, and parents\, all of whom are accomplished artists. Paco debuted on stage at age 12\, and he toured Spain performing with his family at theaters and music halls. After that\, he spent nearly a decade touring Europe\, the United States of America\, Japan\, and India. He has performed with Camarón de la Isla\, Antonio Núñez ’Chocolate’\, Farruco\, and other legendary and iconic artists of his time. He published his first album\, entitled Sastipén Talí in 2005\, collaborating with Dorantes\, Diego de Morao\, Potito y Antonio Fernández Montoya “El Farru”\, as well as his siblings.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Former AGCO Chairman and CEO Martin Richenhagen Discusses 'The America Whisperer' at the Goethe-Zentrum
DESCRIPTION:Doing business in the world’s largest economy can be hard\, especially as an outsider. Martin Richenhagen\, the longtime chairman and CEO of Atlanta-based tractor manufacturer AGCO Corp.\, and former Chairman of the German American Chamber of Commerce Southeast (GACC)\, used his deep corporate experience and hard-won cross-cultural expertise to crack the code on working with Americans\, for a time serving as the only German-born chief executive of a Fortune 500 company and leading the global enterprise to new heights.  \nJoin Global Atlanta\, Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta\, and the German American Chamber of Commerce Southeast\, for an interactive discussion with Mr. Richenhagen on his German-language book\, Der Amerika-Flüsterer: Mein Weg vom deutschen Religionslehrer zum US-Topmanager (The America Whisperer: My Journey from Religion Teacher to U.S. Executive). In conversation with Managing Editor Trevor Williams\, Mr. Richenhagen will reflect on his personal experiences while offering thoughts on the current transatlantic business and trade climate.  \nWhile the meat of the discussion will be in English\, welcoming remarks will be offered in German\, along with readings in German from the text and a bilingual Q&A — Mr. Richenhagen will answer in the language in which the question is asked —  in keeping with the spirit of the book and the mission of the Goethe-Zentrum\, Atlanta’s German cultural center and language institute\, which will hold a grand opening on its new downtown offices just days before our event. \nIn addition to his German roots\, Mr. Richenhagen is a fluent French speaker who has been knighted by the French government for his contributions to the spread of French language and culture. That’s a fitting connection\, given that the Goethe shares space with the Alliance Française d’Atlanta.  \nA portion of the proceeds and donations collected via the form will go toward furthering German language education in Atlanta. \nThis event is part of Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series\, sponsored by the Atlanta Global Studies Center. \nLight bites/drinks will be provided.  \nAbout the Book\nIn The America Whisperer Dr. Richenhagen recalls his roots in postwar Cologne and the character traits that contributed to his long and successful career in the United States. As a prominent proponent of strong German-American ties\, Dr. Richenhagen shares his views on the transatlantic relationship and corporate responsibility as well as his outlook for the 2021 German federal election. \nAbout the Author\nMartin Richenhagen was the first and for many years the only German CEO of a US Fortune 500 company. Born and raised in Cologne\, he studied theology\, philosophy and worked as a French teacher before he changed fields and started a successful international business career.  \nFrom 2004 to December 31\, 2020\,  Mr. Richenhagen was the chairman\, president and CEO of the Atlanta-based agricultural equipment manufacturer AGCO Corporation\, which sells its products under the well-known brands Challenger®\, Fendt®\, Massey Ferguson®\, Valtra® and GSI®.  Mr. Richenhagen is the industry expert on all agribusiness matters and frequently speaks at conferences\, universities and business summits.  \nMr. Richenhagen currently serves on the Board of Directors of PPG Industries\, Linde PLC\, Daimler Truck Holding AG and Stihl AG. In 2008\, Mr. Richenhagen was appointed Honorary Professor to the faculty of agricultural machinery at the TU Dresden\, Dresden University of Technology (Germany) and in 2016\, he received an honorary Ph.D. from Szent István University in Gödöllő\, (Hungary).   \nAs of May 1\, 2020\, Mr. Richenhagen serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University (AICGS). He served as the Chairman of the German American Chambers of Commerce of the US (GACCs) and is a former member of the President’s ‘Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa’.  \nBorn in Cologne\, Germany\, in 1952\, Mr. Richenhagen holds a first and second State Examination in Philology from the University of Bonn\, Germany. \nHe started his career at Hille & Müller GmbH\, Germany where he held multiple positions from 1985 until 1995 leading up to General Manager for Supply Chain Management. He then served as Senior Executive Vice President of Schindler Deutschland Holdings GmbH\, Germany\, a worldwide manufacturer and distributor of elevators and escalators\, from 1995 until 1998. He also served as Group President for CLAAS KGaA mbH\, a global agricultural equipment manufacturer and distributor headquartered in Germany\, from 1998 until 2002. \nFrom 2003 until 2004\, Dr. Richenhagen was Vice President of Forbo International SA\, a flooring material company headquartered in Switzerland before joining AGCO\, where he served as Chief Executive Officer and President of AGCO Corporation\, a global manufacturer and distributor of tractors and agricultural equipment\, from 2004 to 2020 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2020.
