SUMMARY:Diplomatic Dialogue: A meeting with Rachel Galloway\, Consul General of the United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Join ACIR for a Diplomatic Dialogue reception with Rachel Galloway\, Consul General of the United Kingdom in Atlanta. After an hour of networking\, Consul General Galloway will discuss the work of the British Consulate\, her experiences during her career postings and her observations on global affairs with Mark Pierson\, ACIR’s Director of Diplomatic Outreach and Strategic Development. The Diplomatic Dialogue attendees will then have the opportunity to ask the Consul General questions. Remarks are off-the-record and not recorded but social media posts are encouraged. \n\n\n\nAbout Consul General Rachel Galloway \n\n\n\nRachel Galloway assumed her post as His Majesty’s Consul General in Atlanta in July 2022. Before taking on her current assignment\, she served as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of North Macedonia from 2018 to 2022\, where she played a pivotal role in strengthening diplomatic relations in the region. Her diplomatic journey spans various prestigious positions\, including Chair of the Mashrek Maghreb Working Group at the European External Action Service and Head of the Neighborhoods Team at the UK Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels from 2012 to 2015. \n\n\n\nRachel’s career showcases her dedication to international affairs\, with notable roles such as Deputy Head of the International Organisations Department at the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and Head of the Darfur Section in the Sudan Unit at the FCO/Department for International Development. Her commitment extends to serving on the Counter-Terrorism Review Team at Her Majesty’s Treasury and as an FCO Representative in Helmand with the Lashkar Gar Provincial Reconstruction Team in 2006. Rachel’s early career includes diplomatic assignments in Washington and as the Jamaica and Cuba Desk Officer at the FCO. \n\n\n\nBeyond her diplomatic achievements\, Rachel is a devoted wife to Thomas Galloway\, OBE\, and a loving mother of two children. \n\n\n\nU.S.—U.K. Bilateral Economic Relations \n\n\n\nMutual trade and investment are at the heart of our prosperity\, and our commitment to free market values enables our economies to thrive. The United States and the United Kingdom are the world’s first and fifth largest economies in the world. We currently trade over $260 billion worth of goods and services each year. We are each other’s number one source of foreign direct investment and two-way direct investment totals over $1 trillion. \n\n\n\nEvery U.S. state has jobs that are connected to an investment by a U.K. company. More than 1.2 million Americans work for U.K. companies in the United States\, and over 1.5 million Britons are directly employed by U.S. firms. The top U.S. exports to the United Kingdom include aircraft\, machinery\, financial and travel services\, and agricultural products\, such as wine and beer. \n\n\n\nU.S.-United Kingdom International Relations \n\n\n\nThe United States has no closer ally than the United Kingdom\, and British foreign policy emphasizes close coordination with the United States. Bilateral cooperation reflects the common language\, ideals\, and democratic practices of the two nations. Relations were strengthened by the United Kingdom’s alliance with the United States during both World Wars\, in the Korean conflict\, in the Persian Gulf War\, in Operation Iraqi Freedom\, and in Afghanistan\, as well as through its role as a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The United Kingdom and the United States continually consult on foreign policy issues and global problems and share major foreign and security policy objectives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
