SUMMARY:Censorship: The Cuban Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Cubamerica Foundation will be hosting two Cuban directors who have suffered censorship and oppression that ultimately ended in their exile. The directors will screen their films (in Spanish with English subtitles) at the Atlanta Cuban Club free of charge. Afterwards\, the directors will sit on a panel on censorship and art moderated by Professor Juan C. Rodriguez\, PhD\, from the Spanish Department at Georgia Tech. The panel will be conducted in “Spanglish”. Audience participation is encouraged through Q&A. The date of this event is Saturday\, October 12th 2019 at 7pm. Doors open approximately 45 minutes before the event. \nDirector Gustavo Perez Fernandez will share his film “Transitando” which illustrates the antagonistic relationship between the need to be transported and the means to do so. His work has been reviewed in publications like Cine Cubano (Cuban Cinema) and Archivos de la Filmoteca (Archives of the Film Library) in Valencia\, Spain. He holds the Distinction for National Culture and is a member of UNEAC. \nDirector Eliecer Jimenez-Almeida will screen his film “Persona” which explores a day in the lives of five Cuban individuals linked only by the human condition and geographic location. This film won the Best Short Film Award in the Latino and Iberian Film Festival at Yale in 2016 and is currently banned on the island. \nCubamerica will also be unveiling their local library/museum housed in the Atlanta Cuban Club. This small exhibit is comprised of items from and about Cuba donated by Cubans living abroad. Visitors are welcome to check out books from the library– just see a board member at the event. Please email foundationcubamerica@gmail.com if you are interested in making a donation to the collection. \nThe Cubamerica Foundation is a non profit founded in 2018 with the goal of promoting Cuban heritage in Atlanta while facilitating a cultural exchange for all.
