SUMMARY:Midori Goto Concert + Meet and Greet at the Atlanta Symphony
DESCRIPTION:What can be said about Midori that hasn’t already been said? One of the leading concert violin soloists for more than 35 years\, Midori remains in constant demand by orchestras around the world. Later this year she will be honored at the 43rd annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C.\, in recognition of lifetime artistic achievement. No matter what she’s playing\, Midori brings new life and vision to each performance. While it’s challenging to rank Tchaikovsky’s works by their beauty\, his Violin Concerto is arguably one of his finest\, and in the hands of Midori\, is a not-to-be-missed experience. \nAlso on the program\, Spanish conductor Juanjo Mena leads the orchestra in James Lee III’s Sukkot Through Orion’s Nebula\, composed with a vision of two heavens: the spiritual (Orion’s Nebula) and the physical (the Jewish observance of Sukkot)\, where happy family feasts take place outside under tents. The evening concludes with Schumann’s striding Fourth Symphony. \nThe Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will be implementing a mandatory vaccine policy for audiences. Beginning September 1\, 2021\, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to performance\, as well as matching photo ID\, will be required upon arrival at Atlanta Symphony Hall. More details are available on our Health & Safety page at www.aso.org/health-safety.

SUMMARY:The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation
DESCRIPTION:Book Presentation – The Rise of China Inc.: How the Chinese Communist Party Transformed China into a Giant Corporation\nLeveraging its absolute power\, low human rights advantage\, and tolerance by other countries\, the Chinese Communist Party has transformed China into a giant corporation. Living and working are not rights but privileges granted by the party. State-owned firms are business units or subsidiaries\, private firms are joint ventures\, and foreign firms are franchisees of the party. ‘China\, Inc.\,’ enjoys the agility of a firm and the vast resources of a state. Meanwhile\, foreign firms competing with Chinese firms can find themselves matched against the mighty Chinese state. China\, Inc. will interest many readers: it will compel business scholars to rethink state-firm relationships; assist multinational business practitioners in formulating effective strategies; aid policymakers in countering China’s expansion; and inform the public of the massive corporate organization China has become and how democracies can effectively deal with it. \nShaomin Li is Professor and Eminent Scholar at Old Dominion University. His research has appeared in Journal of International Business Studies\, Harvard Business Review\, The Economist\, The Wall Street Journal\, and The Financial Times. He is author of Bribery and Corruption in Weak Institutional Environments (Cambridge University Press\, 2019). \nCo-Sponsors: \n\nAtlanta Council on International Relations\nChina Research Center\nOld Dominion University Strome College of Business

SUMMARY:Creating a Blueprint for a Better Future: Drawdown Georgia and Local Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:UN DAY 2021: Creating a Blueprint for a Better Future: Drawdown Georgia and Local Climate Action \nDate/Time: Thursday\, October 28\, 2021\, at 4:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (approximately) \nEvent Location: Zoom Video Webinar. Panel Discussion (Virtual) \nThis year’s theme is “Creating a Blueprint for a Better Future”. This year #UN76 is dedicated to reminding us how interconnected the world is and that a threat anywhere- from the COVID-19 pandemic to intensifying impacts of climate change – is a threat everywhere. \nUNA-Atlanta strongly believes that the U.S should not -and cannot- tackle global challenges alone. We all know that creating a blueprint for a better future can only be achieved through working together. In this context the 2030 Agenda needs involvement more than ever. That’s why this year’s UN Day will not only celebrate exemplary local efforts but also showcase the state of art expertise and experience in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. We believe in the value of bringing people together from diverse groups/organizations to foster multi-stakeholder conversations to shape our future together. As the world leaders meet at the United Nations this month\, this reminds us that we still need to keep our promise and do our best to achieve the #GlobalGoals. \nTo dedicate this year’s UN Day celebration to the Drawdown Georgia initiative\, a state-specific climate solutions roadmap that has been primarily funded by Ray C. Anderson Foundation. \nThis event will highlight local and essential contributions of Georgians through multilevel actions\, providing opportunity for observer agencies and interested parties to showcase progress and experience of their mitigation efforts. UNA-Atlanta always aims to inspire action\, provide feedback\, share\, and advocate solutions through the lens of justice and equity.

SUMMARY:Ethical Management of AI: A French-American Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:#FranceAtlanta2021 | Ethical Management of AI: A French-American Dialogue \nArtificial intelligence (AI) models are now capable of collecting and analyzing enormous datasets in ways that are challenging fundamental values embraced within Europe and the United States. Holding much promise in terms of increased productivity\, efficiency and quality time\, AI programs and algorithms could function as an assistant\, a peer\, a manager or even as a friend. Indeed\, they might be so revolutionary that no one\, regardless of whether they are consumers\, citizens\, patients\, operators or stakeholders\, will remain unaffected. \nThe power of AI is such that it may jeopardize what it means to be human and whether people retain freedom of choice. AI might reshape the relationship between humans and technology in society. The ethical issues emerging from AI are complex and quickly evolving. What follows is that identifying and implementing appropriate solutions can be difficult. \nThe approaches taken by France\, the European Union and the United States to address these ethical issues are currently being defined and the governments are\, in 2021\, still considering options to maximize the potential of AI and big data while mitigating potential ethical issues. \nThis event is organized by the Georgia Institute of Technology\, the Consulate General of France in Atlanta\, the Emory University Center for Ethics\, the University of Nantes “Droit et Changement Social” (Law and Social Change) Research Center and DataSanté Research Program\, with the support of the Atlanta Office of the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States and the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States.
