SUMMARY:Carlos Reads Palace of Illusions
DESCRIPTION:In Palace of Illusions\, award-winning author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni recasts the Mahabharata through the eyes of Panchaali (Draupadi)\, the fire-born heroine of the great epic. Married to five royal husbands\, brothers who have been cheated out of their father’s kingdom\, Panchaali aids their quest to reclaim their birthright\, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war. \nOver two evenings\, February 24 and March 2\, Professor Joyce Flueckiger of Emory’s Department of Religion leads readers through this feminist retelling of the story\, which is epic in scale and yet deeply human—the story of a woman\, her marriage\, her mother-in-law\, and her relationship with god. \n“Complex\, beautifully wrought… Divakaruni’s feminist reading of Indian lore offers readers a magical lens into the political interplay of gender\, castes\, birthright and life in the monarchy.” —Rocky Mountain News \nFee: $40 for Carlos Museum members; $60 for nonmembers\, and includes the cost of the book. Space is limited\, and registration is required by calling 404-727-6118.

SUMMARY:Transcendent Deities Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 2002\, India embarked on a plan to brand itself for investment and tourism with its “Incredible India” campaign\, which brought together every government sector to market the nation. The campaign was extremely successful\, asserting India’s cultural and economic power in global markets and raising awareness of international brands in domestic ones. This was the beginning of “Brand India.” Now\, after a huge influx of multinational products and advertising and a proliferation of malls—from fewer than 10 in 1999 to more than 750 at present—global capitalism has transformed India’s commercial culture. Brand loyalty\, according to one shopkeeper\, is becoming this generation’s bhakti—their devotion\, their faith. \nThe bazaar\, however\, is an important site of resistance and mediation for this process. It is a temple and training ground where people and objects are entangled in complex networks that create and sacralize various moods and modes of behavior. This is especially the case within the main bazaars of the Pakka Mahal area in Banaras—a center for religion\, culture\, and commerce for millennia. \nIn a lecture titled “Marketing Gods: Mediating Divinity in the Bazaars of Banaras\,” Andy Rotman\, Professor of Religion and South Asian Studies at Smith College examines the ways that gods have functioned like brands in the bazaar—defining reputations\, what it means to be reputable\, and the logic of “trust” (vishwas)—and how this works with and against the conception that brands are\, in fact\, gods.

SUMMARY:Screening and Q&A | The Sweet Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Join for the Atlanta premier of award-winning film The Sweet Requiem (2018)\, followed by Q & A with the directors\, Ritu Sarin & Tenzing Sonam. This intensely personal yet globally relevant film revolves around a young\, exile Tibetan woman\, Dolkar (Tenzin Dolker)\, who lives in a refugee settlement in Delhi\, India. When Dolkar unexpectedly sees a man from her past\, long suppressed memories of her traumatic escape across the Himalayas are reignited and she is propelled on a search for reconciliation and closure. Hailed by Hollywood Reporter as “emphatically universal filmmaking\,” The New York Times contends that\, “The film puts its points across with a delicacy and sobriety rare in moviemaking\,” while TIFF reviewer Cameron Bailey writes: “The Sweet Requiem authentically captures the life-and-death stakes of the real-life escape across the border on which it was based\, but the film’s deeper insights emerge from the complex and shifting allegiances Dolkar must navigate in exile.” \nRecommended parking: Oxford Road Parking Deck\, Peavine Parking Deck

SUMMARY:Irish Movie Night: La Dernière Bande / Krapp's Last Tape
DESCRIPTION:Join the Francophonie Festival for a double screening in French and English of Samuel Beckett’s play La Dernière Bande / Krapp’s Last Tape\nAbout this Event\nDouble Screening of Samuel Beckett’s play La Dernière Bande with Roland Bertin (in French – no subtitles) followed by the English version\, Krapp’s Last Tape. \nSamuel Beckett translated and directed many of his own plays which were written in French and English. He did not give interviews\, but he did grant permission for this filmed record of his own direction of En attendant Godot / Waiting for Godot; Fin de partie / Endgame; La Dernière bande / Krapp’s Last Tape. The productions are intended to be films of benchmark productions\, rather than film adaptations of stage performances. From the series\, Beckett Directs Beckett\, these films of productions in the France and the United States were authorized by Samuel Beckett\, and directed by Walter D. Asmus. \nThe opportunity to see a play written in English and translated into French by the author\, as it is performed side by side\, is a unique experience. \nSynopsis: On his birthday each year\, Krapp records his annual memoir – speaking into the tape recorder about its highs and lows. Before beginning\, he reviews previous recordings\, replaying moments of linear memory in a recursive loop of tape. As Krapp both listens to the voice of his younger self and re-experiences the emotions evoked by the narrative of memory\, he reflects again about the meaning of it all. \nThe post screening discussion of the two films will be led by Dr. Lois More Overbeck\, Emory University\, editor of The Letters of Samuel Beckett (Cambridge University\, 2009-2016). \nThis event is a collaboration between the Consulate General of Ireland in Atlanta and Francophonie Atlanta. Since October 2018\, Ireland has been granted Observer Status at the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)\, and we are proud to welcome them into this year’s program. \nParking: If coming in from Peachtree Road\, parking in rear of building past Bank of America. SUMMARY:GCIV Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture: Artificial Intelligence and Data
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence and Data \nLecture by Daniel Schiff\, Georgia Institute of Technology \nPolicymakers in many countries are developing plans and funding research in artificial intelligence (AI). Global growth is slowing\, and not surprisingly\, many policymakers hope that AI will provide a magic solution. The EU\, Brazil\, and other Western countries have adopted regulations that grant users greater control over their data and require that firms using AI be transparent about how they use it. Will the U.S. follow suit? \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program that gives participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of current world affairs.
