SUMMARY:Telenovelas\, a Looking Glass into Media\, Culture\, and Society in the Americas
DESCRIPTION:There are stories that are addictive. In particular\, there are some that constitute a pandemic transmitted daily via the television screens of more than 130 countries. These serialized dramas are called telenovelas. The simplicity of their codes belies the complexity of their production\, consumption and regulation\, and their potential to convey information and elicit reflection in their audiences. Furthermore\, the engagement of these melodramas with reality\, makes them ideal sites to study the links between media\, culture and society. \nDr. Carolina Acosta-Alzuru is Associate Professor in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Her scholarship focuses on the links between media\, culture and society\, and bridges the disciplines of cultural studies and international media studies as she examines media texts\, their production and reception. She is the author of the books Venezuela es una Telenovela (2007)\, La Incandescencia de las Cosas: Conversaciones con Leonardo Padrón (2013) and Telenovela Adentro (2015). Carolina encompasses wisdom\, knowledge and sensibility not only about her subject but also of Latin American societies\, in particular her native Venezuela\, and she will be casting light on how the telenovela genre and society mirror and reveal one another. Please join us in this enriching and delightful talk! \nLight refreshments will be served. Please plan on arriving by 6:15 pm for networking and refreshments!\nParking: \nParking deck underneath our building is accessible from 14th\, 15th and Peachtree Streets. Please park on RED or GOLD levels in the Colony Square parking garage below the building and bring parking ticket for validation at the Cultural Centers.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Global Leaders Lecture Featuring Colombia's Ambassador to the U.S.

SUMMARY:Cartooning for Peace: The Art of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:A panel of award-winning editorial cartoonists from around the world will engage in a fun and provocative discussion and cartoon demo on democracy and free speech at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights on October 13\, 2016 with an accompanying outdoor exhibition in downtown Atlanta. \nCartooning for Peace founder and one of Le Monde’s most revered cartoonists\, Jean “Plantu” Plantureaux\, along with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s own Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Luckovich and famous Israeli cartoonist Michel Kichka will explore existential questions of a democratic society through their art: in the name of freedom of expression\, shall we tolerate anything and everything? SUMMARY:Breakfast with Dr. Céline-Agathe Caro
DESCRIPTION:“European Unity Between Brexit and Populism: The Future of the European Project from a German Perspective”\nThe outcome of the British referendum has created increasing pressure on the EU to reform itself in order to better respond to the expectations of its citizens. At the same time\, the European member states will only be able to overcome common challenges like the refugee crisis\, terrorist threats\, or Russia’s aggressive foreign policy if they act together. With its economic and political weight\, Germany will play a key role in any further decisions regarding the EU’s future\, but it needs partners to assume the leadership required to help navigate these crises. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Céline-Agathe Caro is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Washington office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS)\, a German political foundation affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).  Dr. Caro is in charge of monitoring U.S. think tanks and universities with a special emphasis on U.S. foreign and transatlantic policy\, U.S. positions on key international issues\, and the American perceptions of current developments in the EU. Between 2010 and 2015\, Dr. Caro was the Coordinator for European Policy in the headquarters of the KAS in Berlin. In addition\, in the spring and fall of 2013\, she was a visiting lecturer at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris and at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Lyon\, a French grande école. Dr. Caro attended the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle\, where she obtained a master’s degree in German Studies as well as a joint Ph.D. in German and French Studies in cooperation with the University of Dresden. \n\n\n\n\nThis program was made possible by a generous grant through the European Recovery Program – Transatlantic Encounters. \n\nCost: \nFree for members \n$15 for nonmembers

SUMMARY:Global Emergencies and Mental Health Forum
DESCRIPTION:This forum will bring together humanitarian\, development\, and health experts from France and the US to discuss the present state of mental health and psychosocial care within the framework of relief and development programming. \nAs the humanitarian aid community addresses today’s global crises\, mental health is an important\, yet often overlooked need that is relevant in all phases of emergency and development interventions. Placing particular importance on disaster preparedness\, building capacity\, social reconstruction\, and aid worker mental health and wellness\, this forum will provide an opportunity to discuss current best practices\, obstacles\, and solution-driven\, culturally sensitive approaches as it enhances public awareness of mental health issues and care in emergencies. \nPanelists include representatives from Doctors Without Borders\, the CDC\, The Carter Center\, and Groupe U.R.D. \nPresented as part of France-Atlanta 2016\, this event is co-organized by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and Emory University’s Center for Humanitarian Emergencies at Rollins School of Public Health\, and Laney Graduate School’s Master’s in Development Practice. \nIt is free and open to the public. A networking reception will follow.
