SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: Struggles Over the Melting Arctic
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Georgia Council for International Visitors in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, the annual 2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 4 – March 25\, 2021 at 7:30 PM. The 2021 virtual lecture series is free\, but registration is required to receive the event link. \nFeb. 25\, 2021 Topic: Struggles Over the Melting Arctic\nLecture by Dr. Anna Stenport\, Professor of Global Studies; Chair\, School of Modern Languages; Founding co-Director\, the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, Georgia Tech. Co-author of Introduction: Arctic Modernities\, Environmental Politics\, and the Era of the Anthropocene \nFormer U.S. President Donald Trump left many scratching their heads when it was rumored that he was looking to purchase the large island nation of Greenland from Denmark. While any potential deal seems highly unlikely\, the event shows the changing opinion within the U.S. government toward engagement with the Arctic region. Because of climate change\, large sheets of arctic ice are melting\, exposing vast stores of natural gas and oil. With Russia and China already miles ahead with their Arctic strategies\, can the U.S. catch up? \nGreat Decisions\, presented by the Foreign Policy Association (FPA)\, highlights eight of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans each year. GCIV is the statewide coordinator for the nonpartisan program. To view the other 2021 topics or learn more about Great Decisions\, visit Gciv.org/programs/gd. \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program by helping facilitate discussion groups and lecture series that give participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of world affairs.

SUMMARY:The Black Middle Class: A Myth? Feat. Dr. Maurice Hobson
DESCRIPTION:As part of their Diversity & Inclusion Series the World Affairs Council of Atlanta invites you to join them on Friday\, February 26\, 2021. \nDubbed “The Black Mecca\,” Atlanta has long been establishing herself as a city where African Americans can prosper. \nSo\, earning a middle-class income\, as the word suggests\, makes you part of the so-called “middle class\,” correct? \nThe answer is no\, according to recent Vox article\, The Mirage of the Black Middle Class. Not even for the Metro Atlanta African American households sitting firmly within that middle-class income bracket with their $55\,000 median income \nDr. Maurice J. Hobson will discuss why historical barriers to generational wealth have kept true financial prosperity and stability elusive for African Americans in Atlanta and throughout the U.S. \nDr. Hobson is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at GSU; author of The Legend of the Black Mecca: Politics and Class in the Making of Modern Atlanta; and consultant/chief historian on such documentaries as Netflix’s “The Art of Organized Noize\,” “Maynard\,” and HBO’s “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children.”\nComplimentary & Open to All.

SUMMARY:Next Move? Considerations In The Troubled US-Russia Relationship with Dmitri V. Trenin Director\, Carnegie Moscow Center

Dmitri Trenin received his PhD from the Institute of the USA and Canada\, Soviet Academy of Sciences (1984). \nAt Carnegie\, Dmitri Trenin chairs the Foreign and Security Policy Program. He is the author of more than 10 books\, including: Russia; What is Russia up to in the Middle East?; Should We Fear Russia?; Russia and the World in the 21st Century; Unconditional Peace: 21st Century Euro-Atlantic as a Security Community; Post-Imperium: A Eurasian Story; Solo Voyage; Central Asia: The Views from Washington\, Moscow\, and Beijing; Integration and Identity: Russia as a New West; and others. \nDmitri Trenin is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London\, the Russian International Affairs Council\, the Russian International Studies Association\, and other organizations.

SUMMARY:2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Virtual Lecture Series: The Korean Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) in partnership with the Atlanta Global Studies Center\, the annual 2021 Dunwoody Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series will take place via Zoom every Thursday evening from February 4 – March 25\, 2021 at 7:30 PM. The 2021 virtual lecture series is free\, but registration is required to receive the event link. \nMar. 11\, 2021 Topic: The Korean Peninsula\nLecture by: Dr. Sohoo Lee\, Associate Professor and Graduate Director\, Civic Engagement and Public Service\, University of West Georgia. Political Commentator for Atlanta Radio Korea (AAM1040 located in Atlanta) and Political Columnist for News Today and W’s (an Atlanta-based Korean weekly news magazine) \nThe Korean Peninsula is facing a defining era. Attempts by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and former U.S. President Donald Trump to repair the rift between North and South have lost any momentum as Pyongyang continues to test long-range missiles for its nuclear weapons program. As the rift between the U.S. and China grows further\, South Korea may end up in the middle of the two superpowers. What does the future hold for the U.S. relationship with the ROK?
