SUMMARY:Shifting Seas in the New Indo-Pacific: A Conversation with Australia’s Ambassador to the United States
DESCRIPTION:Australia enacted some of the strictest lockdowns and border closures during the pandemic\, helping the country all but snuff out COVID-19 but also limiting trade and tourism for a key player in global economic integration. \nRelations have grown testy with China\, its main trading partner\, while Australia’s participation in regional security initiatives like the U.S.-led Quad have hardened positions along ideological lines in the ever-shifting and complex Indo-Pacific region. \nWith a new president in the U.S. and a sense of recovery taking hold in Australia\, how durable is an alliance both have called foundational to peace and security in the region? \nJoin Global Atlanta and the Atlanta Council on International Relations for a special virtual interview with Ambassador Arthur Sinodinos exploring security\, technology\, trade\, diplomacy and how the Southeast United States can play a greater role in the two nations’ increasingly intertwined fortunes. \nOrganized in partnership with the Atlanta Council on International Relations: \n \nSponsored by: \n \n  \nAbout the speaker:\nHis Excellency The Honorable Arthur Sinodinos\, AO  \nArthur Sinodinos\, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. 2 December 2019. During his parliamentary career\, he also held other key roles in and outside Cabinet\, including Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. \nOver a career spanning four decades\, Ambassador Sinodinos has dedicated his professional life to the advancement of Australia and its people. On the election of the Hon. John Howard AC as Prime Minister of Australia in 1996\, Ambassador Sinodinos was appointed the Prime Minister’s Senior Economic  Adviser and in 1997\, the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff\, a position he held for nine years. Between 1987-1989 and 1995-1996\, Ambassador Sinodinos also served as Senior Economic Adviser to Mr. Howard while in opposition. He started his Australian Public Service career in 1979\, rising to the Senior Executive Service in the Department of the Treasury. \nIn 2006\, Ambassador Sinodinos left government to work with Goldman Sachs JBWere\, followed by the National Australia Bank and various corporate appointments. \nIn 2008\, Ambassador Sinodinos was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for his service to politics through the executive function of government\, to the development of economic policy and reform\, and to the Greek community. SUMMARY:Design for Justice: Hip Hop Architecture with Sekou Cooke
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Design Atlanta as architect Sekou Cooke talks about his new book\, Hip Hop Architecture. \nAbout Hip Hop Architecture\n“This book is not for you. It is not for architectural academic elites. It is not for those who have gentrified our neighborhoods\, overly intellectualized the profession\, and ignored all contemporary Black theory within the discipline. You have made architecture a symbol of exclusion\, oppression\, and domination rather than expression\, aspiration\, and inspiration. This book is not for conformists-Black\, White\, or other.” \nAs architecture grapples with its own racist legacy\, Hip-Hop Architecture outlines a powerful new manifesto-the voice of the underrepresented\, marginalized\, and voiceless within the discipline. Exploring the production of spaces\, buildings\, and urban environments that embody the creative energies in hip-hop\, it is a newly expanding design philosophy which sees architecture as a distinct part of hip-hop’s cultural expression\, and which uses hip-hop as a lens through which to provoke new architectural ideas. \nExamining the present and the future of Hip-Hop Architecture\, the book also explores its historical antecedents and its theory\, placing it in a wider context both within architecture and within Black and African American movements. Throughout\, the work is illustrated with inspirational case studies of architectural projects and creative practices\, and interspersed with interludes and interviews with key architects\, designers\, and academics in the field. This is a vital and provocative work that will appeal to architects\, designers\, students\, theorists\, and anyone interested in a fresh view of architecture\, design\, race and culture.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified Series: Pablo Palomino's 'The Invention of Latin American Music'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with a virtual interview with Dr. Pablo Palomino\, Assistant Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, Mellon Faculty Fellow at Oxford College of Emory University and author of the recently released book The Invention of Latin American Music. \nAbout the Book\nThe Invention of Latin American Music offers a transnational history of Latin America as a region\, it uses a multidisciplinary approach to connect music with society\, culture\, and politics\, and lastly\, it challenges the ethnocentric assumptions and preconceptions about Latin America’s unity. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSpeaker Bio\nPablo Palomino is a cultural historian with a specialization in modern Latin America and teaches at Emory University’s Oxford College. A native of Argentina and Licenciado from the University of Buenos Aires\, he did his Ph.D. at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and was also a postdoctoral lecturer at the University of Chicago. \nHis first book\, The Invention of Latin American Music. A Transnational History (https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-invention-of-latin-american-music-9780190687410?lang=en&cc=us)\, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. His research and teaching include the transnational cultural history of Argentina\, Brazil\, and Mexico\, as well as the formation of Latin America as a region. Palomino worked at Memoria Abierta\, an Argentine alliance of human rights organizations that created Latin America’s first Oral History Archive on state terrorism and political violence. His articles deal with the cultural history of music\, Pan-Americanism\, the Jewish diaspora in Latin America\, modernist press in Argentina\, and the critique of the concept of “Global South.” He is currently working on two global histories: the cultural history of Argentine meat\, and the history of “Latin America” as a conceptual and institutional category. \nHe lives in Atlanta since 2017 and is enamored of the city and fascinated by its relations to the nation and the globe. \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda. \n \n  \n
