SUMMARY:William Neuman: Author of 'Things Are Never So Bad That They Can't Get Worse: Inside the Collapse of Venezuela'
DESCRIPTION:Today\, Venezuela is a country of perpetual crisis—a country of rolling blackouts\, nearly worthless currency\, uncertain supply of water and food\, and extreme poverty. In the same land where oil—the largest reserve in the world—sits so close to the surface that it bubbles from the ground\, where gold and other mineral resources are abundant\, and where the government spends billions of dollars on public works projects that go abandoned\, the supermarket shelves are bare and the hospitals have no medicine. Twenty percent of the population has fled\, creating the largest refugee exodus in the world\, rivaling only war-torn Syria’s crisis. Venezuela’s collapse affects all of Latin America\, as well as the United States and the international communityRepublicans like to point to Venezuela as the perfect example of the emptiness of socialism\, but it is a better model for something else: the destructive potential of charismatic populist leadership. The ascent of Hugo Chávez was a precursor to the emergence of strongmen that can now be seen all over the world\, and the success of the corrupt economy he presided over only lasted while oil sold for more than $100 a barrel. Chávez’s regime and policies\, which have been reinforced under Nicolás Maduro\, squandered abundant resources and ultimately bankrupted the country. \nThings Are Never So Bad That They Can’t Get Worse is a fluid combination of journalism\, memoir\, and history that chronicles Venezuela’s tragic journey from petro-riches to poverty. Author William Neuman witnessed it all firsthand while living in Caracas and serving as the New York Times Andes Region Bureau Chief. His book paints a clear-eyed\, riveting\, and highly personal portrait of the crisis unfolding in real time\, with all of its tropical surrealism\, extremes of wealth and suffering\, and gripping drama. It is also a heartfelt reflection of the country’s great beauty and vibrancy—and the energy\, passion\, and humor of its people\, even under the most challenging circumstances. \nAbout the Author \nWilliam Neuman is an author and journalist who reported for the New York Times for over 15 years. He served as the Times Andes Region Bureau Chief from 2012 to 2016 while based in Caracas\, Venezuela. He previously reported for the New York Post and his work has also been featured by the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram\, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel\, and The Independent\, among others. He began his journalism career while living in Mexico and has published English translations of several Spanish-language novels. \nPromotional language provided by publisher.

SUMMARY:Atlanta Francophonie Festival 2022 | Live Concert: Arma Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Venez fêter avec nous le Mois de la Francophonie!\nWe are excited to invite you to our live concert with Swiss-artist Arma Jackson. It takes place on Sun\, March 27 from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM at the Old Monk Brewery in Atlanta. Food & beverages can be bought at the location\, however the event is free and open to the public. Nous sommes enthousiastes! \nAbout the artist: Arma Jackson\, real name Jordan Mfumu-Kanda Dhi\, born 23 January 1995 in Lausanne\, is a Swiss singer-songwriter. It was by stumbling upon his older brother’s old cassettes that Arma Jackson discovered the world of rap at the age of 10 and later found a passion for beat-making. He gradually opened his ears to other genres to create his own musical bubble\, from Michael Jackson to Coldplay\, via Aznavour. A diversity from which he draws his inspiration. A first key to understand the singularity and creativity of his music\, between rap egotrip\, neo-soul sounds\, acid pop and house music. His first album\, Idéal\, was released last year. The recipient of the 2021 Swiss Music Award for Best Artist from Francophone Switzerland\, Arma Jackson is making a name for himself beyond Swiss borders.

SUMMARY:"Of Quilts and Clay: African-American Applied Arts and Sculpture of the 20th Century" with John Daniel Tilford
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by John Daniel Tilford\, Curator of Collections at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art\, will focus on the rich artistic heritage of both the Gee’s Bend community of quilters in Southern Alabama and late 19th/early 20th century potters of the old Edgefield District in South Carolina. Once dismissed as purely practical and utilitarian objects\, the quilts and pottery created by these two communities are now heralded as great works of art. Placing such works in a historical context — like in “Beloved Community” — can help foster greater appreciation for quilt and pottery as more than just tools.\nAdmission is $10 at the door for non-members. Free with Petrel Pass.\nDirections and map: https://museum.oglethorpe.edu/about/directions-map/

SUMMARY:Building for Change
DESCRIPTION:Kennesaw State University’s (KSU) Department of Architecture\, in partnership with the Ismaili Council for the Southeastern USA\, brings you the 2022 Spring Lecture\, “Building for Change\,” with Shirley Blumberg\, Founding Partner\, KPMB Architects and a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to architecture and community. This lecture will illustrate the power of architecture in bringing change to communities through promoting pluralism\, social justice\, and equity in architectural practice. \nShirley’s projects in the cultural sector include the Global Centre for Pluralism based in Ottawa\, Toronto’s Fort York Public Library\, and currently\, the competition-winning Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Other academic projects include the Julis Romo Rabinowitz and Louis A. Simpson International Building at Princeton University\, the Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre and Ponderosa Hub\, both at the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, and CIGI\, the Centre for International Governance Innovation Campus in Waterloo Ontario\, which received an American Institute of Architects Honor Award\, a Royal Institute of British Architects International Award\, and Canada’s Governor General’s Medal. \nSocial justice projects have also been a focus of her practice. She has designed affordable housing projects for Toronto Community Housing\, affordable student housing at UBC\, and prototypical housing for the northern Indigenous community of Fort Severn. \nInspired by the Order of Canada’s recognition – they desire a better country – Shirley began a conversation with like-minded colleagues that became BEAT – Building Equality in Architecture Toronto – a grassroots initiative to promote equality for women and minorities in the profession; today there are chapters across Canada. She has also led the firm’s Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion (EDI) initiative\, now a framework for policy and practice at KPMB. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 13 at 4:30 pm in the Architecture Gallery for the opening of the Ismaili Center Houston and Global Centre for Pluralism exhibition featuring guided tours and the historic signing of the MoU between KSU and the Ismaili Council. The exhibition will also include the architectural renderings of the Ismaili Center Houston\, the seventh Centre to join the global network of Ismaili Centres\, and their contributions to promoting pluralism and a deeper understanding among societies. \n*Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances\, the “Building for Change” lecture with Shirley Blumberg\, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday\, April 13 at 4:30 pm\, is postponed to Wednesday\, April 20 at 4:30 pm. \nThe event is free\, open to the public\, and will be held at the Design II Auditorium at the Marietta Campus.

SUMMARY:Swiss Cleantech Symposium at UGA: Can Tech Save the World?
DESCRIPTION:Humanity’s annual consumption of resources currently far exceeds the planet’s capacity to regenerate itself sustainably. To preserve the environment for the generations to come\, it is vital that we shift to cleaner technologies. While efforts in various countries are underway\, global collaboration on cleantech innovation is critical to achieve environmental objectives such as water conservation\, biodiversity preservation\, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The ever-growing challenges facing the world of environmental protection can only be met if the international community works together and coordinates its efforts. \nWith the aim of creating a dialogue and accelerating the sharing of solutions around major environmental challenges across the Atlantic\, the Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta\, the Swiss Business Hub in Atlanta\, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Georgia are partnering to host a Cleantech Symposium. Centered around the exhibition “CAN TECH SAVE THE WORLD? Swiss solutions to protect the environment\,” the symposium will showcase innovative cleantech solutions from Switzerland to make our societies resolutely more sustainable. This event will be a unique opportunity for Switzerland to demonstrate the vibrancy of their sustainability industry. UGA looks forward to hosting this event as a way to engage with a vibrant\, international sustainability industry\, display its own research and outreach activities in the area of clean technologies\, and expose faculty and students to fresh ideas and new possibilities. \nOn April 20\, join entrepreneurs and scientists from both Switzerland and the state of Georgia to get exclusive insights on clean technologies that can effectively address today’s challenges!
