SUMMARY:GCIV Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: The Philippines and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:The Philippines and the U.S. \nLecture by Dr. Katja Weber\, Georgia Institute of Technology \nThe Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century. However\, since the election of Rodrigo Duterte\, the country has pivoted more toward China\, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a large-scale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S\, relations with the Philippines? \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program that gives participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of current world affairs. \n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:An "Off-the-Record" Conversation with Anat Sultan-Dadon\, Consul General\, Israel
DESCRIPTION:United States Relations with Israel. The United States was the first country to recognize Israel as a state in 1948\, and the first to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2017. Israel has long been\, and remains\, America’s most reliable partner in the Middle East. Israel and the United States are bound closely by historic and cultural ties as well as by mutual interests. \nIsrael’s founding was preceded by more than 50 years of efforts to establish a sovereign state as a homeland for the Jewish people. The 1917 Balfour Declaration asserted the British Government’s support for the creation “in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” Following the end of World War I (1914-1918)\, the League of Nations entrusted Great Britain with the Mandate for Palestine. Immediately after the end of British mandate on May 14\, 1948\, the State of Israel was proclaimed\, and the U.S. recognized Israel that same day. Arabs in the Mandatory and neighboring Arab states rejected a 1947 UN partition plan that would have divided the Mandatory into separate Jewish and Arab states\, and the area has seen periods of invasions and armed conflict since 1948. \nThe United States is committed to supporting the parties in efforts to reach a lasting\, comprehensive peace agreement that offers a brighter future to both Israel and the Palestinians. \nAnat Sultan-Dadon joined the Israeli diplomatic corps in 2004. She has extensive experience working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has held various posts and positions in Israel and abroad. She has held positions at the Israeli embassies in Cameroon\, Germany\, the Netherlands and most recently in Canberra\, Australia. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem she has held positions in the Euroasia Division and the Asia-Pacific Division. \nConsul General Sultan-Dadon assumed her role as the Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern United States in July 2019. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and education and masters in criminology from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. \nConsul General Sultan-Dadon is joined by her husband\, Yaron\, and their three daughters.

SUMMARY:China's Great Gamble: Can the Chinese Government Create a Technological Superpower?
DESCRIPTION:Join for the China Research Center’s Annual Lecture by Dr. Barry Naughton on January 24th. \nChina’s Great Gamble: Can the Chinese Government Create a Technological Superpower? \nIn its effort to maintain high-speed growth\, China has stepped up government steerage and investment in high-tech industry. Increasingly\, this has meant gambling on a new wave of untested technologies: artificial intelligence\, 5G broadband communication\, autonomous vehicles and smart robotics. This expensive and risky strategy has aggravated conflict with the United States\, and given China an enormous opportunity to fail. However\, if it succeeds\, China will emerge as a new kind of power\, showing off its new model as an alternative to American capitalism. \nBIO: Barry Naughton is the So Kwanlok Professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy\, University of California\, San Diego. Naughton’s work on the Chinese economy focuses on market transition; industry and technology; foreign trade; and political economy. His first book\, Growing Out of the Plan\, won the Ohira Prize in 1996\, and a new edition of his popular survey and textbook\, The Chinese Economy: Adaptation and Growth\, appeared in 2018. \nThis Event is Free and Open to the Public.

SUMMARY:Rescue and Refuge: The Holocaust in Denmark
DESCRIPTION:Annual Holocaust Remembrance Event: \nIn Commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, Am Yisrael Chai presents a powerful and unforgettable event: \nRescue and Refuge: The Holocaust in Denmark \nRabbi Bent Melchior – Keynote Holocaust Survivor speaker; Former Chief Rabbi of Denmark \nRabbi Bent Melchior was born in Germany in 1929. When Hitler came into power in 1933\, the Melchior family moved back to Copenhagen\, Denmark. Bent was 10 years old when the war broke out. After the Nazi invasion of Denmark in 1941\, the Danish government refused to collaborate with the Nazis. In 1943\, Bent’s father – Rabbi Marcus Melchior warned all Jews of an impending round-up\, and encouraged them to hide or plan an escape. The Danish Resistance Movement\, with the assistance of many ordinary Danish citizens managed to evacuate 7\,220 of Denmark’s 7\,800 Jews by sea to nearby neutral Sweden where they were received as refugees. Bent Melchior and his family were among them. \nThrough this mammoth effort\, more than ninety percent of Denmark’s Jews were saved. \nRabbi Bent Melchior returned to Denmark in 1945. He volunteered as a soldier in the fight for Israeli independence\, and then returned to Copenhagen where he received his PhD. He married Lillian Weissdorf in 1951\, and they have four sons. He pursued his Rabbinical education in London in 1963. After his father’s death in 1969\, he succeeded him as the Chief Rabbi of Denmark. He retired in 1996\, and continues his humanitarian and charitable work both in Denmark and around the world.

SUMMARY:Carlos Reads Dothead
DESCRIPTION:US Poet Laureate Billy Collins describes Amit Majmudar’s work as “nothing less than a torrent of poetic inventiveness driven by the inexhaustible poetic energy.” In Dothead\, nuclear radiologist\, novelist\, and former poet laureate of Ohio\, Amit Majmudar asserts claims of both the self and the other. The title poem shows us the place of an Indian American teenager in the bland surround of a mostly white peer group\, partaking of imagery from the poet’s Hindu tradition; the very next poem is a fanciful autobiography\, relying for its imagery on the religious tradition of Islam. \nProfessor Deepika Bahri of Emory’s Department of English leads readers through a selection of poems from this volume\, which “juxtaposes the serious and the grave\, the base and the transcendent\, and those acts of gentleness and brutality that define us.” \nFee: $25 for Carlos Museum members; $40 for nonmembers\, and includes the cost of the book. Space is limited\, and registration is required by calling 404-727-6118.

SUMMARY:Emory University: Annual Turkish Lecture Series With Author Elif Batuman
DESCRIPTION:The Halle Institute for Global Research invites you to attend a lecture by Elif Batuman\, author of critically acclaimed books such as The Idiot and The Possessed which explore her identity as a Turkish-American woman\, intentionality about the precision of language\, and befuddlement in the early age of email. \n\n\n\nIn her first book\, The Possessed\, Elif Batuman wrote about her experiences studying Russian literature as a PhD student in America\, Russia\, and Uzbekistan. She did not initially think of her attraction to Russian literature – which is also manifested by the title of her first novel\, The Idiot – as being related to her Turkish family background\, or to her experiences in Turkey as a child. \nAfter The Possessed came out in 2010\, she moved to Istanbul\, where she worked at Koç University and wrote for the New Yorker magazine. She lived in and visited Istanbul regularly between 2009 and 2015. During that time\, she saw the beginning of the Syrian Civil War\, the opening of the Museum of Innocence\, the full run of The Magnificent Century\, the Gezi protests\, HDP parliamentary success in 2015\, and the Suruç bombing. Witnessing such a politically vital and complicated period of history\, experiencing the tensions of national identity more closely\, and coming to understand\, as an adult\, the country that shaped her parents\, prompted Elif to rethink her attraction to Russian novels and her understanding of Turkish history. Through the lens of current events\, she came to discover that works of Dostoevsky are more closely related to the ideology of Atatürk than she originally realized. \nThis event includes a seated luncheon. Please RSVP by Thursday\, January 23\, to reserve a seat
