SUMMARY:General David Petraeus\, Author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta History Center for an Author Talk with General David Petraeus\, author of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nTwo leading authorities—an acclaimed historian and the outstanding battlefield commander and strategist of our time—collaborate on a landmark examination of war since 1945. Conflict is both a sweeping history of the evolution of warfare up to Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine\, and a penetrating analysis of what we must learn from the past—and anticipate in the future—in order to navigate an increasingly perilous world. \n\n\n\nIn this deep and incisive study\, General David Petraeus\, who commanded the US-led coalitions in both Iraq\, during the Surge\, and Afghanistan and former CIA director\, and the prize-winning historian Andrew Roberts\, explore over 70 years of conflict\, drawing significant lessons and insights from their fresh analysis of the past. Drawing on their different perspectives and areas of expertise\, Petraeus and Roberts show how often critical mistakes have been repeated time and again\, and the challenge\, for statesmen and generals alike\, of learning to adapt to various new weapon systems\, theories and strategies. Among the conflicts examined are the Arab-Israeli wars\, the Korean and Vietnam Wars\, the two Gulf Wars\, the Balkan wars in the former Yugoslavia\, and both the Soviet and Coalition wars in Afghanistan\, as well as guerilla conflicts in Africa and South America. Conflict culminates with a bracing look at Putin’s disastrous invasion of Ukraine\, yet another case study in the tragic results when leaders refuse to learn from history\, and an assessment of the nature of future warfare. Filled with sharp insight and the wisdom of experience\, Conflict is not only a critical assessment of our recent past\, but also an essential primer of modern warfare that provides crucial knowledge for waging battle today as well as for understanding what the decades ahead will bring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nGeneral David Petraeus\, US Army (Ret.) is one of the leading battlefield commanders and strategists of our time.  He served over 37 years in the US military culminating his career with six consecutive commands as a general officer\, five of which were in combat\, including command of the Surge in Iraq\, US Central Command\, and NATO/US Forces in Afghanistan.  He subsequently served as Director of the CIA\, following confirmation by the Senate by a vote of 94-0\, during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus is now a Partner with the global investment firm KKR and Chairman of the KKR Global Institute\, which he established in 2013.  He also serves on corporate boards\, is the Kissinger Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson School\, and is the co-author\, with Andrew Roberts\, of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. \n\n\n\nGeneral Petraeus graduated with distinction from the US Military Academy\, earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, and has held academic appointments at 5 universities in addition to his current position at Yale.  He is also Co-Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Global Advisory Council\, Senior Vice President of the Royal United Services Institute\, and a member of the Trilateral Commission\, Council on Foreign Relations\, and Aspen Strategy Group.  \n\n\n\nHis awards include four Defense Distinguished Service Medals\, the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award\, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor\, the Combat Action Badge\, the Ranger tab\, and master parachutist wings.  He has also been decorated by 14 foreign countries and is believed to be the only person in uniform to throw out the first pitch of a World Series game and do the coin toss for a Super Bowl.  He was runner-up to Vladimir Putin for Time Person of the Year in 2007\, the Daily Telegraph Man of the Year\, twice a Time 100 selectee\, three times a Foreign Policy top public intellectual\, Prospect magazine’s Public Intellectual of the Year\, one of US News and World Report’s Top 25 Leaders\, and sanctioned by Russia (in 2022). \n\n\n\nThis event is powered by ATLVets\, in partnership with BENS\, Atlanta Press Club and VETLANTA \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

It is in this spirit that the BBC each year invites a leading figure to deliver a series of lectures on radio. The aim is to advance public understanding and debate about significant issues of contemporary interest. \n\n\n\nThe very first BBC Reith lecturer was the philosopher\, Bertrand Russell who spoke on “Authority and the Individual”. Among his successors were Arnold Toynbee (The World and the West\, 1952)\, Robert Oppenheimer (Science and the Common Understanding\, 1953) and J.K. Galbraith (The New Industrial State\, 1966). The Reith lectures have also been delivered by the Chief Rabbi\, Dr Jonathan Sacks (The Persistence of Faith\, 1990)\, Dr Steve Jones (The Language of the Genes\, 1991)\, Michael Sandal (A New Citizenship\, 2009)\, Martin Rees (Scientific Horizons\, 2010) and Aung San Suu Kyi and Eliza Manningham-Buller (Securing Freedom\, 2011). Most recently the Reith Lecturers have been Niall Ferguson (The Rule of Law and Its Enemies\, 2012)\, Grayson Perry (Playing to the Gallery\, 2013)\, Dr. Atul Gawande (The Future of Medicine\, 2015)\, Stephen Hawking (Black Holes\, 2016)\, Kwame Anthony Appiah (Mistaken Identities\, 2016) and Hilary Mantel (Resurrection: The Art and Craft\, 2017).

SUMMARY:Swiss Consulate Documentary Screening: 'Inferno in Paradiso'
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Switzerland in Atlanta has the pleasure to collaborate once again with the Department of French and Italian of the Emory College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in the context of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo. This year’s Settimana (Oct. 16-22) had the theme “Italian and Sustainability” (L’italiano e la sostenibilità)\, which is why we will be screening the Swiss environmental documentary INFERNO IN PARADISO. \n\n\n\nAbout the film: In Salento\, cancer has increased by 40%; the air\, the earth and the water are poisoned\, the land of the “Mediterranean diet” has become a Hell in Paradise. This beautiful region is being used for a giant garbage dump. How did such pervasive pollution come to this rural area? We traveled South to witness the damage\, to meet those who live in this hell\, and to see if and how they can cope. All is not lost: there is organized resistance\, with criminal and civil cases underway against the Italian State. The film\, beginning and ending in Switzerland\, is a heartfelt cry to put a stop to the unconscionable greed that has so much harmed the people and their land. \n\n\n\nYou will be able to watch the movie in Italian with English subtitles. The Swiss director of the movie\, Tiziana Caminada\, is pleased to join us via video to answer your questions at the end of the screening. The event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nJoin for this insightful story on Thursday\, November 30\, 2023\, at 6:30 PM at Emory University (Goodrich C. White Hall\, room #112). Doors open at 6:30 PM and the screening starts at 7 PM. Refreshments will be served prior to the screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
