SUMMARY:Breakfast and Discussion with Oliver Owcza
DESCRIPTION:“Transatlantic Challenges – A European Perspective” \nToday´s world faces a growing number of challenges: unsettled political and humanitarian crises in the Middle East\, North Africa and Afghanistan; a corresponding increase of migrants challenging established immigration systems of receiving countries; an increasingly negative perception of globalization and even a growing skepticism about the merits of international cooperation and trade. Against this background the transatlantic partnership has been and is an essential pillar for jointly addressing these challenges and constantly highlighting the potential of trust and value based cooperation. The discourse intends to summarize the most important ones from a European/German perspective. \nAbout Oliver Owcza \nSince July 2015 Oliver Owcza serves as Head of Division for North America in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin. \nIn the academic year 2014/15 he has been invited as Fellow to the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University\, where he has researched and lectured in the area of Fragile States and International Crisis Diplomacy. \nPreviously\, he has been serving as Germany´s Deputy Ambassador in Kabul between 2012 and 2014. His responsibilities encompassed the whole range of the German political\, military\, police\, development and cultural engagement in Afghanistan. It included regular field visits\, in particular to the Northern provinces. \n\nRegister at events@gaccsouth.com

SUMMARY:Turkish Foreign Relations: the U.S.\, Europe\, and the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Since coming to power in 2002\, Erdogan has reoriented Turkish foreign policy in order to situate Turkey as a regional power in the Middle East. However\, this pivot has not quite been successful.  Turkey is isolated in the Middle East\, with few friends and many threats\, ranging from the Assad regime to ISIS.  Following the July 15th coup attempt\, the United States’ ability to work with the Erdogan government in overcoming the trauma of the coup will have important long term consequences for whether Turkey maintains its course of reconciliation with the West\, or if it chooses instead to pursue Russia as a regional ally. \nThe Turkish Lecture Series is sponsored by The Claus M. Halle Institute for Global Learning at Emory University\, the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University\, and the American-Turkish Friendship Council in Atlanta.
