SUMMARY:Academic Freedom and Critical Thinking as Transnational Rights
DESCRIPTION:While students and scholars in North America and western Europe have taken the right to academic freedom for granted\, scholars in other parts of the world are often in more precarious positions. Professor Hoodfar’s own recent arrest\, followed by 112 days in Iran’s Evin Prison on charges of “researching and dabbling in feminism\,” has made her sharply aware of the extent to which scholars\, and the ideal of academic freedom are in danger globally. There is an urgent need to advocate for academic freedom as a transnational right.

SUMMARY:FPL Food slaughtering facility visit in Augusta\, GA
DESCRIPTION:FPL Food\, LLC headquartered in Augusta\, GA is the number one privately owned processor of beef and ground beef selection in the whole southeast United States. \nAfter a little more than 25 years in the beef industry in France\, Francois Leger\, French founder\, bought and started FPL Food in June 2004. Francois brings not only a passion for the industry\, but also expertise through innovation and knowledge of all things beef. \nThe FACC is honored to take the opportunity to visit this site on February 8th\, 2018 in Augusta\, GA. It will be an educational and exhilarating experience you won’t want to miss! \nFPL Food\, LLC is a stealthy-but-successful beef-processing firm.\nSince 2004\, FPL Food LLC has grown quickly\, from two plants in Augusta\, Ga.\, employing 400 people\, to four facilities in Georgia and South Carolina\, with upwards of 800 employees and annual revenues topping $350 million. The company was founded by Frenchman François Léger\, as a harvesting plant and manufacturer of boxed beef and ground-beef products.\nToday\, FPL Foods is the largest\, privately owned\, vertically integrated beef company in the Southeast.\nFrom the beginning\, FPL Foods was the only beef company that adopted a policy of not allowing any meat from downer cattle into the supply chain.\nFPL was the first slaughtering facility in the US to utilize remote video auditing at its plant in Augusta\, to ensure animal-welfare standards were being met. The company was also an early adopter of DNA traceability technology as a food-safety measure starting about four years ago. Today\, its beef products are 100-percent DNA traceable.

SUMMARY:Japanese Economy: Successful Recovery\, Challenges\, Foreign Policy\, and US Relations' a Lecture by Dr. Shujiro Urata
DESCRIPTION:The Japanese economy appears to have recovered from a two-decade long recession\, as it is currently experiencing growth that has continued for seven consecutive quarters. A low unemployment rate of only 2.7 percent and\nrecord high corporate profits also reflect the favorable economic situation. However\, future prospects are rather dim unless Japan can successfully deal with various structural problems\, which include a shrinking and ageing\npopulation\, increasing government debt\, and low exposure to the global economy. Shujiro Urata\, Ph.D. is Dean and Professor of Economics at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies\, Waseda University. He is a former Economist\nat the World Bank\, and prior to that\, a Research Associate at the Brookings Institute. Professor Urata examines Japan’s current economic situation identifying the problems and discussing the importance of adopting an activist\ninternational economic policy with a focus on the US-Japan relationship in order to overcome the problems and achieve sustained economic growth.

SUMMARY:ACIR Presents: Addressing the North Korea Dilemma: An American Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The Atlanta Council for International Relations presents speaker Sunny Park\, Atlanta Business Hall of Fame laureate\, 2000 USO Patriot Medal recipient\, and a naturalized U.S. citizen. Park is CEO of General Building Maintenance. He founded GBM in 1983. Under the motto “Zero Defects is Our Goal”\, GBM became one of the top private commercial cleaning services providers in the United States and was awarded as one of the Fastest Growing Companies in Atlanta. \nFew security issues today confront the United States and its South Korean allies as does the threat posed by North Korea’s ever-expanding nuclear weapons inventory and missile delivery systems. Estimates of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal range as high as 60 weapons. Moreover\, after a slow start and at a speed that has surprised American intelligence officials\, North Korea has developed new ballistic missiles that some experts conclude could reach as far as Washington\, D.C. \nAs a result\, on January 25th The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists advance its Doomsday Clock forward 30 seconds\, pushing humanity’s proximity to disaster to an alarming two minutes to midnight. Rachel Bronson\, the president and CEO of the Bulletin has noted that this is “the closest the Clock has ever been to Doomsday.” \nSeoul\, the capital of South Korea\, and its 25 million residents is only 35 miles from the North Korean border and is within range of as many as 10\,000 North Korean artillery sites. The United States is now within range of Kim Jong-un’s nuclear weapons. As a result\, solutions to the current crisis do not come easily. Come hear an American with Korean roots address the dilemma now posed by this great danger. ACIR looks forward to seeing you on February 15 at the Capital Club.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Hervé KOUBI
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned dance company\, Compagnie Hervé KOUBI\, debuts their critically acclaimed work “What the Day Owes to the Night” (Ce que le jour doit à la nuit) at the Rialto.   Recognized as one of Europe’s most distinctive choreographers\, Hervé KOUBI believed he was of French heritage until he was 25\, when his father suddenly revealed his Algerian roots. “What the Day Owes to the Night” is the result of his ensuing journey to his parents’ homeland\, where he recruited artists who had never been to dance school\, but performed hip-hop and capoeira\, backflips and head spins\, on Algeria’s streets and beaches.  In a beautifully fluid piece of inspired choreography that combines urban and contemporary dance movement\, capoeira\, and martial arts with powerful imagery\, KOUBI’s French-Algerian West-African all-male dance troupe presents a jaw-dropping performance packed with emotional intensity.
