SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: The Rise of Populism in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Eleanor Morris\, Ph.D.\, Agnes Scott College \nMass migration\, and the problems associated with it\, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit\, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s\, and propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders\, however\, these parties are invariably illiberal\, anti-American\, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin\, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States.

Registration is free with a donation of $25 or more to MODA. \nThe Exhibition \nOn view Sunday\, February 24 through Sunday\, June 9\, Passione Italiana will chronicle the evolution of the espresso machine and document its technology and industrial design developments. The exhibit will showcase espresso makers used in Italy during the mid-twentieth century—alongside inventive coffee sets and unique crockery—and traverse through the decades\, highlighting the influence designers such as Aldo Rossi\, Toyo Ito\, Richard Sapper and Massimiliano Fuksas have had on classic and contemporary models. Italian coffee company\, illycaffè\, will provide freshly brewed espresso beverages for guests to enjoy before or after visiting the exhibition. \nAppealing to both design lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike\, the forthcoming exhibition will also survey the social and historical impact coffee and coffeehouses have had around the world\, including the role of cafés as incubators in social justice movements and how they have helped fuel everything from literary and musical achievements to political revolutions. \n“Many of us use coffee and coffeehouses to think deeply\, make connections with others and jumpstart our imaginations\,” says Laura Flusche\, Executive Director at MODA. “Our vision in presenting this stunning exhibition is not only to trace the influence designers have had on espresso makers in cafe settings\, as well as those used in the home\, but also to spark the conversation surrounding coffee’s ability to connect. The show celebrates the ways in which cafes have harbored creative thinkers\, revolutionary actions and social justice throughout history.”

SUMMARY:An "Off the Record" Conversation with UK Consul General Andrew Staunton
DESCRIPTION:There is no other country with which the United States has a closer relationship than with the United Kingdom. Yet it seems that the importance of that relationship is often neither well-understood\, nor is the magnitude of cooperation between our two countries across the spectrum of issues that we confront. Perhaps equally important in today’s world is the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union\, a relationship that affects the United States directly and indirectly in a multiplicity of ways. Please join for an “off the record” conversation with British Consul General Andrew Staunton. Seating is limited to 20 attendees. \nAndrew Staunton took up his appointment in Atlanta as Her Majesty’s Consul General in June 2018. Andrew is the senior UK government representative in the Southeast United States responsible for relations with the states of Georgia\, Tennessee\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Mississippi and Alabama. \nBefore taking up his posting in Atlanta\, Andrew served four years as Deputy Head of Mission and Economic Counsellor at the British Embassy in Athens. He was also Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Dublin from 2009 to 2013. Throughout both of these postings\, Andrew’s main focus was on the economic crises in Greece and Ireland\, boosting bilateral relations\, promoting the UK’s interests\, and working on a range of issues linked to the European Union. Prior to this\, Andrew worked in the Foreign Office as Deputy Director responsible for security. \nAndrew joined the UK’s diplomatic service in 1987. He has also served overseas in China\, France\, Romania and Canada. Andrew was born in Glasgow\, Scotland. He is accompanied in Atlanta by his wife\, Rebecca. They have two adult children\, both living in the UK.

SUMMARY:Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series: Nuclear Negotiations: Back to the Future?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Robert Kennedy\, Ph.D.\, Georgia Tech \nNuclear weapons have not gone away\, and the Trump administration has brought a new urgency\, if not a new approach\, to dealing with them. The President has met with Vladimir Putin as the New Start Treaty with Russia comes up for renewal in 2021\, the first presidential summit ever with Kim Jong-un occurred to discuss denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula\, and President Trump has decertified the Obama nuclear deal with Iran. To what degree should past nuclear talks guide future U.S. nuclear arms control negotiations? Can the art of the deal apply to stabilizing our nuclear future?
