SUMMARY:Crisis in the Andes: Venezuela\, Colombia and Bolivia
DESCRIPTION:ACIR is honored to host Jennie Lincoln\, Special Advisor for Latin America and the Caribbean\, The Carter Center. \nCrisis in the Andes: Venezuela\, Colombia\, and Bolivia \nNorth Americans were raised with the romantic awe that came from viewing the beauty of the Andes Mountain ranges\, the natural rain forests to the east\, and the native cultures inhabiting a number of nations within its reaches. \nIn this New Year 2020\, the National Geographic panorama has been shattered by approximately one third of Venezuelan society fleeing from a failed despot into neighboring Colombia\, the residual effect being a welcoming Colombia now teetering on the edge of social and economic chaos. Add to this\, Bolivia exhausted by the incompetency of its recently deposed president\, is enmeshed in economic chaos and civil war. \nThree failed nation states that have destroyed the National Geographic image and supplanted it with the potential to have a catastrophic impact on the entire region of South America.

SUMMARY:2020 U.S. Law Updates to Know for Japanese and Other Foreign Firms
DESCRIPTION:Join Baker Donelson and Kitahama Partners Joint Seminar co-sponsored by JETRO\, JASG and JCCG \nBaker Donelson will provide updates on several key U.S. laws that Japanese businesses should know about to help reach their goals and objectives for 2020. \nThey will cover: \n\nCFIUS Regulations\nThe Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is an inter-agency committee chaired by the Treasury Department with the authority to review\, modify and potentially reject certain types of foreign investment that could adversely affect U.S. national security. CFIUS’s new regulation can have enormous impact on transactions in U.S. because even a minority investment in a U.S. company may be subject to the CFIUS review. To avoid unexpected delay or failure of transaction\, you must know this new regulation.\nEssentials of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)\nThe CCPA is an expansive privacy law which provides consumers with more rights and control over the personal information that businesses collect about them. The law went into effect on January 1\, 2020\, but continues to evolve in advance of the Attorney General beginning enforcement on July 1\, 2020. It’s a good time to double-check your company’s data activities relating to California consumers and it’s not too late to address the CCPA compliance obligations.\nThe current landscape of Legalized Marijuana\nThere are a number of inconsistencies between US Federal and State laws that make it difficult to determine what is legal. 33 states plus the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medical purposes\, and 11 states have legalized marijuana for recreational use. Are you prepared for dealing with marijuana which appears in relation to your business and workplace?\n\nAlso joining are attorneys from Kitahama Partners from Japan. They will present “How to Handle Legal Matters in the US from Japanese Perspective\,” and also can provide insights for U.S. companies doing business in Japan. \nModerator and Speakers: \n\nBob Johnson\, Baker Donelson\, Shareholder\nJohn M. Scannapieco\, Baker Donelson\, Shareholder\nAlex Koskey\, Baker Donelson\, Associate\nMike Williams\, Baker Donelson\, Associate\nHannah Jarrells\, Baker Donelson\, Associate\nTakanori Nakajima\, Baker Donelson\, Visiting Attorney\nJiri Mestecky\, Kitahama Partners\, Partner\nMasataka Shitanishi\, Kitahama Partners\, Partner\nMika Akiyama\, Kitahama Partners\, Registered Foreign Attorney\n\nAgenda \n\n1:00 p.m. Registration\n1:30 p.m. Introductions and Welcoming Remarks\n1:40 p.m. Presentations\n4:50 p.m. Concluding Remarks – Transition to Reception\n5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Reception

SUMMARY:From Sit-ins to Hashtags\, The Evolution of Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:The Civil Rights movement in the United States ignited a flame that was felt globally during the 1960s. Dozens of activists\, such as Coretta Scott King and Ambassador Andrew Young\, fought and ultimately shaped the culture of every American\, laying the foundation for a global shift in politics\, human rights\, and economic development. The birthplace of the movement was Atlanta\, Georgia\, a small town at the time with a burning desire to change the landscape of the South. \nThis February\, in honor of Black History month\, join the World Affairs Council of Atlanta’s Young Leaders in welcoming Taos Wynn\, Founder and President of Millennial Civil Rights\, and James Woodall\, President of the Georgia NAACP\, as they discuss what has changed since the iconic civil rights movement\, the human rights challenges in the world today\, and what we as individuals can do to ensure equity in the World. \n

SUMMARY:Images in the Margins: Renaissance Readers Draw the Meanings of their Texts
DESCRIPTION:Anthony Grafton considers the meaning and relevance of margin notes found in Renaissance texts. In this period\, educated readers went through their texts pen in hand. They underlining passages\, adding references to names and short summaries in the margins\, and interpreting or responding to the text. Most marginalia were verbal. But scholars from Petrarch in the fourteenth century to John Dee in the sixteenth also made drawings of many kinds in the margins of their books. This lecture presents some of their work and argues that it often—though not always—had an interpretative purpose. \nRecommended parking: \nFishburne Parking Deck\, Oxford Road Parking Deck

SUMMARY:Carlos Reads Palace of Illusions
DESCRIPTION:In Palace of Illusions\, award-winning author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni recasts the Mahabharata through the eyes of Panchaali (Draupadi)\, the fire-born heroine of the great epic. Married to five royal husbands\, brothers who have been cheated out of their father’s kingdom\, Panchaali aids their quest to reclaim their birthright\, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war. \nOver two evenings\, February 24 and March 2\, Professor Joyce Flueckiger of Emory’s Department of Religion leads readers through this feminist retelling of the story\, which is epic in scale and yet deeply human—the story of a woman\, her marriage\, her mother-in-law\, and her relationship with god. \n“Complex\, beautifully wrought… Divakaruni’s feminist reading of Indian lore offers readers a magical lens into the political interplay of gender\, castes\, birthright and life in the monarchy.” —Rocky Mountain News \nFee: $40 for Carlos Museum members; $60 for nonmembers\, and includes the cost of the book. Space is limited\, and registration is required by calling 404-727-6118.
