SUMMARY:ACIR Presents - Major General USA Ret Mari K. Eder
DESCRIPTION:The Atlanta Council on International Relations presents Major General USA Ret Mari K. Eder. She will be presenting on The Information Apocalypse: Factors degrading the effectiveness of mass communication in reaching influencer audiences. \nThe Global Information Apocalypse: \nA complex and rapidly-evolving public information landscape is under attack daily – from state and non-state actors\, from within and from the outside. Conventional journalism competes with user-generated content in a toxic environment filled with hidden bias\, hackers\, trolls\, and false information. As a result\, the role that news media has traditionally played as ‘the fourth estate’ in democratic societies\, has all but dissipated. Tech likewise plays a major role\, with innovations from Virtual Reality to Artificial Intelligence continuing to distort reality. \nThe spreading erosion of confidence and trust is beginning to have a significant impact not only on America but also on our friends and allies\, blurring lines\, authorities\, and conventional sources. The daily onslaught is generating a global loss of trust in information itself\, not just sources and topics. Nearly seven out of ten people worldwide worry about false information or ‘fake news’ being used as a weapon. Many nations are taking actions to root out false news. Yet the implications for societies and indeed for democratic institutions themselves continues to rise.

SUMMARY:Trade Turbulence: How Georgia's Canadian\, European Partners View Looming Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:It’s a new environment for global trade. NAFTA is being rejiggered. Europe escaped Trump’s metal tariffs\, but issues like privacy and tax are still causing rifts in the relationship. With protectionism on the rise\, it’s unclear whether we’re headed for light scuffle or an all-out trade war.  \nIn Georgia\, international business is largely linked to North American and European investors and trading partners. Canada is the top export destination for Georgia\, and Germany is the No. 2 import market.        \nWith that in view\, how are European and Canadian investors\, which rely on global supply chains\, responding to this newfound uncertainty? \nJoin the Cumming-Forsyth Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Global Atlanta as we convene expert speakers over lunch to explore these issues and more: \nOpening Keynote: Mary Waters\, Deputy Commissioner\, International Trade\, Georgia Department of Economic Development \nTax Update: Mike Whitacre\, CPA/Partner\, Frazier & Deeter \nPanel Discussion: \n\nNadia Theodore\, Consul General of Canada in Atlanta\, a former trade negotiator and expert on NAFTA modernization \nAndreas Boedenauer\, Director of Business Development\, Actemium INP USA\, a German engineering consultancy that works often with inbound manufacturers in the Southeast U.S. \nDiane Alleva Caceres\, Managing Director\, Market Access International\, which has 18 years of experience working with Canadian and European companies entering the U.S. market\n\nCost: $20/members\, $40/non-members \nView the agenda here or below: \ntmp_12694_4-4-2018_94741_ (3)
