SUMMARY:Spivey Hall Summer World Music Festival: Mariachi Atlanta
DESCRIPTION:Spivey’s Summer World Music Festival is a power-packed\, three-day celebration of global music featuring six performances. In between concerts\, festival goers can enjoy DIY craft tables reflecting the cultures of the day and an “instrument petting zoo.” The Clayton State University Center will again this year offer a globally-inspired menu and concert goers can picnic by the lake before or after performances. \nMariachi Atlanta celebrates a musical expression that dates back to at least 19th century Western Mexico. Mariachi goes beyond music; it is the sum of a cultural revolution expressed through a group of musicians\, dressed in popular clothing (most recently charro suits) which encompasses the essence of Mexico and its people. It is something cultural\, spiritual and traditional that is unique to this country\, an experience not to be missed. Their songs speak about machismo\, love\, betrayal\, death\, politics\, revolutionary heroes and even animals (one particularly famous song is “La Cucaracha“). \n

SUMMARY:The Next 50 Years: A Luncheon Discussion on Georgia-Japan Ties
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nJoin business and government leaders for an interactive luncheon discussion on reinvigorating the historic Georgia-Japan commercial and cultural relationship from the grassroots up.  \nBACKGROUND:  \nThe first Japanese company arrived in Georgia nearly 50 years ago\, touching off a journey of shared prosperity and ever-deepening community engagement. The result? More than 600 Japanese firms creating 37\,000+ Georgia jobs\, along with better access to Japan’s market for homegrown companies like Coca-Cola\, Aflac and Delta. \nRecent bilateral trade tensions\, however\, have tested these foundations and raised questions about the future trajectory of a once-assured alliance. \nWith this as the backdrop\, Georgia business\, government and economic development leaders traveled to Japan in May to meet with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, JETRO\, business associations\, and companies across Japan with major investments in the South. \nThe Grassroots Exchange Network trip\, underwritten by the Japan Foundation\, coincided with a state visit by U.S. President Donald Trump\, who became the first foreign leader to be received newly enthroned Reiwa Emperor. It also preceded the G20 Summit set to be held in Osaka this month. More relevant locally\, this October will also see the annual SEUS-Japan annual conference come to Savannah \nJoin Global Atlanta\, the Consulate General of Japan and the law firm of Miller & Martin to hear firsthand from participants about their visits to Tokyo\, Osaka\, Kyushu and Georgia sister cities of Kurobe and Osaki. \nThe luncheon will also include a Q&A and brainstorming session with the audience to determine next steps to reinvigorate Georgia-Japan ties with the next half-century in view.  \nSPEAKERS:  \nIntroductory remarks:   \nTakashi Shinozuka\, Consul General of Japan to four states in the Southeast \nTrip participant discussion:  \n-Trevor Williams\, Managing Editor\, Global Atlanta  \n-Al Hodge\, founder of Hodge Consulting Services\, a 40-year economic development veteran and vice chair of the Japan America Society of Georgia.  \n-Blaine Williams\, Manager of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County

SUMMARY:Georgia and Mexico: Navigating a New NAFTA — A Roundtable on the Trade Deal’s Potential Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:Series sponsored by: \n \nThe clock is winding down for Congress to vote on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement before the summer recess\, a deadline Republican proponents say should be reached to keep the deal out of the political vortex of the 2020 elections. Democrats\, meanwhile\, are holding out for changes to the pact and have so far refused to bring it to the floor of the House.   \nWhatever the timeline\, the Trump administration’s successor trade deal to NAFTA has ignited stark debates about how changes to its core content will affect individual companies as well as overall North American competitiveness. \nIn Georgia\, much of the controversy has centered around autos and agriculture\, sectors where stances on the deal vary widely. But what’s actually new in USMCA\, and how will it affect some of the state’s largest stakeholders? \nJoin Global Atlanta and the Mexican Consulate General for a lively luncheon debate to untangle the deal’s details and hear from leading voices on its potential local effects. The event will be hosted at Smith Gambrell and Russell LLP and is co-sponsored by the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Georgia.   \nSpeakers (current list – additional speakers pending):   \nOpening Remarks:   \nConsul General of Mexico\, Javier Diaz de Leon \nPanel Discussion \n\nModerator: Trevor Williams\, Managing Editor\, Global Atlanta\nTim Samples\, Assistant Professor of Legal Studies\, UGA Terry College of Business\n\nGary Black\, Commissioner\, Georgia Department of Agriculture\n\nAndres Villegas\, President\, Georgia Forestry Association\n\nLisa Winton\, CEO and Co-owner\, Winton Machine\n\nThis event is part of the Latin American Crossroads Series sponsored by Emory Executive Education at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.
