SUMMARY:"The Myth of Chinese Capitalism"
DESCRIPTION:Presented by\nDexter Roberts \nModerated by\nDr. John McIntyre\nProfessor of Management & Founding Director of the Georgia Tech CIBER \n“The Myth of Chinese Capitalism: The worker\, the factory and the future of the world” \nAbstract: As discussed in his new book The Myth of Chinese Capitalism\, Dexter Roberts will describe how surging income inequality\, an unfair social welfare system\, and rising social tensions block China’s continued economic rise with implications for companies and countries around the world. He will discuss how China is struggling to leave behind its “Factory to the World” growth model\, and include its hundreds of millions of left-behind migrant workers into a more innovative\, consumption-driven economy and why that means China may not become the superpower the world expects. He will also discuss how COVID-19 has exacerbated the already huge social disparities in China further complicating its ongoing economic transition and putting it at risk of falling into the middle-income trap. He will discuss how global supply chain diversification is affecting China and the implications of a Trump administration turning its back on engagement while a Xi Jinping-led China is determined to pursue a “wolf warrior” assertive approach to the world. \nDexter Roberts is an award-winning writer and speaker on China now serving as a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and a Fellow at the University of Montana’s Mansfield Center. Previously he was the China bureau chief and Asia News Editor at Bloomberg Businessweek\, based in Beijing for more than two decades. Roberts’ first book\, The Myth of Chinese Capitalism: The Worker\, the Factory\, and the Future of the World\, was published by St. Martin’s Press in March 2020. He also publishes a weekly newsletter called Trade War. \n \nThis event is organized by the China Research Center and co-sponsored by the CIBER at Georgia Tech.

SUMMARY:A Trained Workforce is a Prepared Workforce
DESCRIPTION:In the words of Mike Tyson\, an American boxer heavyweight champion\, “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” 2020 is evidence that every business is susceptible to disruption when you least expect it\, whether it stems from product tampering\, supply chain issues\, diversity and inclusion blunders\, biological threats\, protests\, and civil unrest\, or the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and the global economy. Regardless of what goes wrong\, organizations need to respond quickly with decisions that value your people and demonstrate accountability. \nData shows over 50% of organizations do not have robust contingency plans in place and lack preparedness efforts to reduce operational and reputational threats. The cost of unpreparedness impacts businesses’ reputation for up to five years\, significantly affects employee morale\, increases the potential for legal implications\, and reduces the leaderships team’s ability to make data-driven decisions. \nThe webinar will provide you with: \n\nA crisis response checklist for employees\nThe three elements to measure preparedness for your business and suppliers\nThe six questions your employees need you to address before\, during\, and after disruption\nA simulation to respond to an unexpected crisis that could affect your operation and employees\n\nMeet the Speaker\nVanessa Vaughn Mathews\nAsfalis Advisors\nChief Resilience Officer \nVanessa is an acclaimed expert with a background in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Her experience leading organizations through disruption spans across aviation\, manufacturing\, retail\, transportation\, and logistics industries strengthening organizational readiness. Mathews has a vested interest in the Charlotte region\, with global experiences managing reputational and operational risks in Mexico\, China\, Brazil\, and the United Kingdom. \n  \nSponsored by Bridgehouse Law

SUMMARY:Serenbe Showhouse & Cocktail Reception hosted by Serenbe founder Steve Nygren
DESCRIPTION:The Swedish American Chamber of Commerce invites members to a self-guided tour of the Serenbe Showhouse\, followed by a garden cocktail reception hosted by fellow SACC GA member and Serenbe Founder\, Steve Nygren. \nSerenbe founder Steve Nygren believes that if you want to change the world\, start in your own backyard. The vision for the community of Serenbe was born in an effort to protect the beautiful rural land just outside of Atlanta known as Chattahoochee Hill Country. The first house at Serenbe was built in 2004 and today the community is home to over 650 residents. Serenbe has won numerous awards including the Urban Land Institute Inaugural Sustainability Award\, the Atlanta Regional Commission “Development of Excellence“ and EarthCraft named Serenbe the “Development of the Year.” \nThe visit to Serenbe starts with a self-guided tour of this year’s showhouse which is located in the new Mado neighborhood. Mado’s European style designs are inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian architecture. Visually and conceptually\, Mado was strongly inspired by the time Nygren spent in Sweden.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk: 'Corazón de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South Since 1910'
DESCRIPTION:When Latino migration to the U.S. South became increasingly visible in the 1990s\, observers and advocates grasped for ways to analyze “new” racial dramas in the absence of historical reference points. However\, as this book is the first to comprehensively document\, Mexicans and Mexican Americans have a long history of migration to the U.S. South. Corazon de Dixie recounts the untold histories of Mexicanos’ migrations to New Orleans\, Mississippi\, Arkansas\, Georgia\, and North Carolina as far back as 1910. It follows Mexicanos into the heart of Dixie\, where they navigated the Jim Crow system\, cultivated community in the cotton fields\, purposefully appealed for help to the Mexican government\, shaped the southern conservative imagination in the wake of the civil rights movement\, and embraced their own version of suburban living at the turn of the twenty-first century. \nRooted in U.S. and Mexican archival research\, oral history interviews\, and family photographs\, Corazón de Dixie unearths not just the facts of Mexicanos’ long-standing presence in the U.S. South but also their own expectations\, strategies\, and dreams. \nJulie M. Weise is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in U.S. and Latin American history in 2009. From 2001-2\, she worked in the administration of Mexico’s President Vicente Fox as a speechwriter and researcher for the cabinet-level Office of the President for Mexicans Living Abroad. She has also worked as a translator\, paralegal\, project manager\, and policy researcher at immigration-related agencies in New Haven and Los Angeles. \nJavier Díaz de León serves as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta. Diaz is a member of the Mexican Foreign Service since 1991 and holds the rank of Ambassador since April 28th\, 2017. During his diplomatic career he has held various positions: Deputy Consul General in San Diego; Deputy Consul General in New York\, Head of the Office for Migration and Hispanic Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico in the United States\, and Executive Director of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City. In May 2016\, he was appointed as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta\, Georgia\, serving in this position since June 18th\, 2016. The Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta oversees the states of Georgia\, Alabama\, and most of Tennessee.
