SUMMARY:Author Talk: Vanessa Riley
DESCRIPTION:A remarkable\, sweeping historical novel based on the incredible true-life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas\, a free woman of color who rose from slavery to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies. \nGet Tickets\nTickets are $10 for not-yet-members\, $5 for members\, free for Insiders. \nBorn into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat\, Doll bought her freedom—and that of her sister and her mother—from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur\, merchant\, hotelier\, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent.\nVanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant\, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret\, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England. \nFrom the bustling port cities of the West Indies to the forbidding drawing rooms of London’s elite\, Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds\, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history. \nAbout the Author\nIn addition to being a novelist\, Vanessa Riley holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering and a master’s in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University. She also earned BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Penn State University.  She currently juggles mothering a teen\, cooking for her military-man husband\, and speaking at women’s and STEM events. She loves baking her Trinidadian grandma’s cake recipes and collecting Irish crochet lace. You can catch her writing from the comfort of her porch in Georgia\, with a cup of Earl Grey tea. Riley lives in Atlanta. \nPromotional language provided by the publisher.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified Series: Dr. Kirk Bowman and Jon Wilcox's 'Reimagining Global Philanthropy'
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with an in-person interview with Dr. Kirk S. Bowman\, professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology\, and Jon R. Wilcox\, co-founder and the former president\, CEO\, and director of California Republic Bancorp. \nDr. Bowman and Mr. Wilcox are the authors of the recently released book Reimagining Global Philanthropy: The Community Bank Model of Social Development.  \nNote: Space for the in-person event at the Global Atlanta offices\, is limited to the first 20 guests. Tickets are $15. A meet and greet with the authors will begin at 11 a.m.\, followed by an in-person interview starting at 11:30.\n \nCan’t make it? This event will also be broadcasted and viewable free of charge via Zoom. Please select your preferred option when registering. \nSponsored by Gene Kansas Commercial Real Estate: \n \nHosted by Constellations\, home to the Global Atlanta offices:  \n \nAbout the Book\nWell-meaning Westerners want to find ways to help the less fortunate. Today\, many are not just volunteering abroad and donating to international nonprofits but also advancing innovations and launching projects that aim to be socially transformative. However\, often these activities are not efficient ways of helping others\, and too many projects cause more harm than good. \nReimagining Global Philanthropy shares the journey of a conservative banker and a progressive professor to find a better way forward. Kirk S. Bowman and Jon R. Wilcox explain the boom in the global compassion industry\, revealing the incentives that produce inefficient practices and poor outcomes. Instead of supporting start-up projects with long-shot hopes for success\, they argue\, we can dramatically improve results by empowering local leaders. \nApplying lessons from the success of community banks\, Bowman and Wilcox develop and implement a new model that significantly raises philanthropic efficacy. Their straightforward and rigorously tested approach calls for community members to take the lead while outside partners play a supporting role. Bowman and Wilcox recount how they tested the model in Brazil\, demonstrating the value of giving people in marginalized communities the opportunity to innovate. In a time of widespread social reckoning\, this book shows how global philanthropy can confront its blind spots and failures in order to achieve truly transformative outcomes. \nReaders can access five of the documentary films discussed in the book on a companion website. In addition to the films\, chapter discussion questions and other supplemental materials are also available at the site. \nAbout the Authors\nKirk S. Bowman (right) and Jon R. Wilcox (left) in Chacrinha\, Rio de Janeiro.\nKirk S. Bowman is a professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is co-founder and director of the international NGO Rise Up & Care. His books include Lessons from Latin America: Innovations in Politics\, Culture\, and Development (2014). \nJon R. Wilcox is the co-founder and the former president\, CEO\, and director of California Republic Bancorp. His current and previous board affiliations include Mechanics Bank\, Waterfall Bridge Capital\, Rise Up & Care\, South Coast Repertory\, Junior Achievement\, and Fiji Reef Resources. \n\n  \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda. \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Made in China: A Memoir of Love and Labor' Author Anna Qu in Conversation With Sopan Deb
DESCRIPTION:As a teen\, Anna Qu is sent by her mother to work in her family’s garment factory in Queens. At home\, she is treated as a maid and suffers punishment for doing her homework at night. Her mother wants to teach her a lesson: she is Chinese\, not American\, and such is their tough path in their new country. But instead of acquiescing\, Qu alerts the Office of Children and Family Services\, an act with consequences that impact the rest of her life. \nNearly twenty years later\, estranged from her mother and working at a Manhattan start-up\, Qu requests her OCFS report. When it arrives\, key details are wrong. Faced with this false narrative\, and on the brink of losing her job as the once-shiny start-up collapses\, Qu looks once more at her life’s truths\, from abandonment to an abusive family to seeking dignity and meaning in work. Traveling from Wenzhou to Xi’an to New York\, Made in China is a fierce memoir unafraid to ask thorny questions about trauma and survival in immigrant families\, the meaning of work\, and the costs of immigration. \nAbout the Author\nAnna Qu is a Chinese American writer. Her work has appeared in The Threepenny Review\, Lumina\, Kartika Review\, Kweli Journal\, Vol. 1 Brooklyn\, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and lives in Brooklyn. Find out more at annaqu.com. \n  \n  \nAbout the Moderator\nSopan Deb is a writer for The New York Times\, where his topics have included sports and culture. \nBefore joining the Times\, Deb was one of a handful of reporters who covered Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign from start to finish as a campaign embeds for CBS News. He covered hundreds of rallies in more than 40 states for a year and a half and was named a “breakout media star” of the election by Politico. \nAt The New York Times\, Deb has interviewed high-profile subjects such as Denzel Washington\, Stephen Colbert\, the cast of Arrested Development\, Kyrie Irving\, and Bill Murray. \nHe is the  author of the memoir\, “Missed Translations: Meeting The Immigrant Parents Who Raised Me.” His forthcoming novel\, “The Elm Tree\,” is due out in 2022 through Simon and Shuster. Deb’s work has previously appeared on NBC\, Al Jazeera America\, and The Boston Globe\, ranging from examining the trek of endangered manatees to following a class of blind filmmakers in Boston led by the former executive producer of Friends \nPromotional language provided by the publisher.

SUMMARY:Goethe Geburtstag Picknick
DESCRIPTION:“Aber kein Genuss ist vorübergehend\, denn der Eindruck\, den er hinterlässt\, ist bleibend.” (No enjoyment is temporary as the impression it leaves is everlasting.) – J. W. v. Goethe \nHappy birthday to Goethe in Atlanta! \nWir feiern 45 Jahre Goethe in Atlanta – am 272. Geburtstag unseres Namensgebers\, geboren am 28. August 1749. They’re celebrating 45 years of Goethe in Atlanta – on the 272nd birthday of their namesake\, born on August 28th\, 1749. \nThe organization was first established in 1976 as a branch of Germany’s Goethe-Institut\, the premier German culture and language organization\, and after the German government withdrew its monetary support from our location\, we were incorporated as a non-profit known as the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta. They continue to proudly serve as the preeminent non-profit source for German language instruction\, heritage and cultural exposure in the southeastern United States. \nAfter so many months in the virtual space\, they are eager to follow Goethe the poet’s example and enjoy nature together with you\, your family\, your loved ones\, your friends\, and your dogs. \nThey will rejoice in the shades of a beautiful pavilion in Grant Park and under the trees\, where you will enjoy German music\, Brezeln\, and good conversation. You will hear Goethe quotes and listen to anecdotes of 45 years Goethe in Atlanta. There will be soccer balls and a Torwand competition\, and the opportunity for our students and members to share their personal experiences with Goethe in the last 45 years! \nMore than anything\, they hope you agree it is time to bring the Goethe-Familie back together. \nDue to health and safety concerns\, they ask that each party bring their own picnic basket with food and beverages. While there will be a pavilion with picnic tables\, space will be limited so we also encourage you to bring a blanket or camping chairs to sit on the grass if seating is not available at the tables. \nThe event is free to attend\, but registration is requested in advance. \nThey hope to see you there and look forward to celebrating Goethe (the man’s) and Goethe in Atlanta’s birthday with you! Because: “Nothing should be treasured more highly than the value of the day.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
