SUMMARY:White House Initiative -- AA and NHPI Economic Summit
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 10\, 2024\, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans\, Native Hawaiians\, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) will host its sixth 2023-24 Asian American\, Native Hawaiian\, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Economic Summit in Duluth\, GA with participation from the White House and federal agencies. The events are being held in collaboration with the Small Business Administration\, U.S. Department of the Treasury\, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization\, the National Asian / Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship\, and other federal agencies. Please note that this is a re-scheduled Economic Summit that was originally planned for October 6\, 2023. \nLanguage barriers and limited outreach have historically held AA and NHPIs back from applying for federal procurement\, jobs\, grants\, and programs. Although approximately 10 percent of small businesses in the U.S. are AA and NHPI-owned\, only 2.8 percent of federal contracting dollars went to AA and NHPI small businesses in Fiscal Year 2020\, according to the Small Business Administration. In May 2021\, President Joe Biden re-established and reinvigorated WHIAANHPI through Executive Order 14031. The Initiative’s whole-of-government approach engages federal agencies to improve interagency policymaking\, program development\, and outreach\, and address barriers impacting AA and NHPIs across the country.

SUMMARY:(Ouchigohan) Oyakodon: An Online Cooking Class via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special edition of the family-friendly online Japanese cooking class series おうちごはん！Ouchigohan! – Japanese Home Cooking. We will start by learning how to make Namasu\, a type of salad that pairs well with Oyakodon\, a Japanese rice bowl made with both chicken and eggs. The Namasu is a celebration salad made with Daikon radish\, carrots\, onions\, scallions\, eggs\, and other ingredients. The Oyakodon rice bowl is also called the “Mother and Child” rice bowl. Since this savory dish is made with both chicken and eggs\, the words Oya and Ko refer to parent and child\, as such chicken and egg. Tender chicken chunks are cooked in dashi broth and when hot enough\, beaten eggs are poured over the top and cooked briefly until the eggs are silky and just set. Which came first? The chicken or the egg? SCRIPTION HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDebra Samuels\, head of program content and curriculum development for Table For Two\nDebra Samuels leads the program content and curriculum development of TABLE FOR TWO USA’s Japanese inspired food education program\,   “Wa-  Shokuiku -Learn. SUMMARY:Geo-Political Crystal Ball: Monitoring the Internet to Predict Global Events
DESCRIPTION:Nearly every geopolitical event leaves an internet footprint and the practice of measuring online traffic is a critical tool in providing a timely understanding of international incidents. \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, Doug Madory\, Director of Internet Analysis for Kentik (a network aggregator and activator of data and analytics)\, has been at the forefront of using internet measurement data analysis to gain and share understandings of our modern hyper-connected world. After fine-tuning and testing the data\, Doug and colleagues synthesize their findings to provide insights to industry leaders and governments on possible geo-political outcomes. We ask the critical question: What happens if the lines of communications break… like literally become severed. Doug will address the very real risk of disruptions to submarine internet cables and whether or not the US military could be left blind in a sea of combatants.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoug Madory\, Director of Internet Analysis for Kentik\nDoug Madory is the Director of Internet Analysis for Kentik (a network aggregator and activator of data and analysis) where he works on internet infrastructure analysis. The Washington Post dubbed him “The Man who can see the Internet” for his reputation in identifying significant developments in the global layout of the internet. Doug is regularly quoted by major news outlets about developments ranging from national blackouts \, BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) hijacks and the activation of submarine cables. Prior to Kentik\, he was the Lead Analyst for Oracle’s Internet Intelligence team (formerly Dyn Research and Renesys).

SUMMARY:China's Challenge and America's Response
DESCRIPTION:Fei-Ling Wang will discuss his new book The China Race: Global Competition for Alternative World Orders\, which analyzes the global competition for power and leadership between the US-led West and the People’s Republic of China. Examining the nature\, aims\, means\, accomplishments\, pitfalls and failures of Beijing’s foreign policy and the state of and developments in Sinology and the West’s China policy\, this book focuses on the existential PRC-USA rivalry and propose a holistic strategic framework\, with three ranked objectives and a list of suggested shortcuts\, for the West and the world\, including the Chinese people\, to manage\, benefit from\, and prevail in the China Race. \n\n\n\nPeter Harrell will discuss his recent article in Foreign Affairs in which he argues that rather than pursuing economic policies intended to change China\, the United States should accept that the Xi regime will not change. Instead\, it should actively manage the economic relationship with China in ways that can advance specific U.S. interests and respond to evolving geopolitical demands. In doing so\, the U.S. should develop a more effective economic strategy toward its close allies and other partners.  If it does so\, he contends that the United States is well positioned to maintain its edge in leading economic domains. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFei-Ling Wang\, Professor\, Nunn School of International Affairs and author of The China Race: Global Competition for Alternative World Orders (SUNY Press\, 2024).\nPhilip Fei-Ling Wang\, Ph.D. (University of Pennsylvania)\, professor at Sam Nunn School of International Affairs\, Georgia Institute of Technology (fw@gatech.edu). He has also published dozens of book chapters and journal articles in four languages. \n\n\n\nHe taught at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point) and U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs)\, and held visiting and adjunct/honorary positions in institutions like European University Institute in Italy\, Sciences Po in France\, National Sun Yat-sen University and National Taiwan University in Taiwan\, National University of Singapore\, Renmin University and Anhui Normal University in China\, University of Macau\, University of Tokyo\, and Sungkyunkwan University and Yonsei University in Korea.
