SUMMARY:An Evening of Magic With Martin Lübcke
DESCRIPTION:Join the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Atlanta and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta as we welcome German magician\, Martin Lübcke. \nMartin Lübcke is beyond comprehension. Full of charm and extremely dynamic\, his shows move from showcasing the art of magic to performing true miracles. \nHis sleeves rolled up\, within reach of the audience and directly in front of the eyes of stunned spectators\, the most daring illusions become reality. One cannot understand it\, and does not want to at all… What the reigning German Champion accomplishes in an unrivaled way pulls everyone into his unique magical spell. His performance is more than a show full of tricks. Those who experience his breathtaking art will never be able to forget it. \nMartin Lübcke was captured by the powerful allure of magic at the age of seven when he saw David Copperfield fly and knew that one day he wanted to perform this inconceivable illusion himself. Since that very moment\, Martin Lübcke has perfected his breathtaking art with great love for detail and endless enthusiasm. But beware – his passion is contagious! The willing suspension of disbelief happens when the magician allows his audience to perform illusions themselves\, and they suddenly discover their own miraculous abilities. \nFrom the biggest auditorium to the most intimate setting\, Martin Lübcke thrills his audiences\, captures their hearts and offers one thing above all: Irresistible entertainment that has to be shared with others!

SUMMARY:Assignment China: Mike Chinoy & “Follow the Money”
DESCRIPTION:How do we know what we know about China? The images most Americans hold of China were shaped by news coverage. Our multipart documentary series Assignment: China focuses on the journalists who have described the remarkable changes in China since the 1940s.  More information can be found here. \n\n\n\n\nMike Chinoy\, the distinguished former CNN Asia correspondent and USC U.S.-China Institute Senior Fellow\, is the writer and reporter for the series. Chinoy was CNN’s Senior Asia Correspondent and served as a foreign correspondent for more than thirty years. After joining CNN at its London bureau in 1983\, Chinoy served as Beijing Bureau Chief from 1987 to 1995. He was also Hong Kong Bureau Chief for five years. He is currently Senior Fellow at the U.S.-China Institute\, University of Southern California.\n\n\n “Follow the Money” abstract: China’s economic rise had been the dominant line in the narrative of the country for two decades. There had long been grumbling about those with connections benefitting disproportionately from this advance. In 2012\, two American news organizations documented the immense yet hidden fortunes accumulated by the relatives of Xi Jinping\, soon to be China’s top leader\, and Wen Jiabao\, the outgoing prime minister. Coming after other journalists had broken stories about scandals\, the Chinese state punished these organizations and sought to intimidate others.\n\n\nAll 12 episodes can be viewed from the University of Southern California’s Youtube channel.\n\nFollow the Money Flyer 16 Feb 2016

SUMMARY:It’s Time to Decolonize Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Professor An-Na’im will explore what he refers to as a people-centered alternative to the current state-centric enforcement model for human rights. This is not simply about replacing an ineffective enforcement model with a more effective cultural and political alternative. Instead\, professor An-Na’im claims that the current legalistic\, state-centric approach has utterly and totally failed in providing any protection of human rights whatsoever. To put it bluntly\, there is no possibility of any form or degree of protection of universal human rights except by human beings for themselves\, in their own communities. \nThis lecture is open to the public. Parking is available in Peavine Deck and Lot. There is no charge to park in the deck after 4:00 p.m. Please click here for DIRECTIONS and a CAMPUS MAP.
