Infrastructure\, Entrepreneurship\, and Education in the 21st Century” \nIf England and Germany set global standards in the 19th century\, and the United States for much of the 20th century\, what then are the prospects for Chinese leadership across a wide range of fields in the 21st century. This lecture\, based on a set of Harvard Business School cases\, will explore China’s growing capacities in infrastructure\, entrepreneurship and education\, and will address to degree to which China’s political system advances or hinders China’s capacity for leadership. \nWilliam C. Kirby is T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University and Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He is a University Distinguished Service Professor. Professor Kirby serves as Chairman of the Harvard China Fund and Faculty Chair of the Harvard Center Shanghai. At Harvard he has served as Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies\, Chairman of the History Department\, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. SUMMARY:It’s Time to Decolonize Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Professor An-Na’im will explore what he refers to as a people-centered alternative to the current state-centric enforcement model for human rights. This is not simply about replacing an ineffective enforcement model with a more effective cultural and political alternative. Instead\, professor An-Na’im claims that the current legalistic\, state-centric approach has utterly and totally failed in providing any protection of human rights whatsoever. To put it bluntly\, there is no possibility of any form or degree of protection of universal human rights except by human beings for themselves\, in their own communities. \nThis lecture is open to the public. Parking is available in Peavine Deck and Lot. There is no charge to park in the deck after 4:00 p.m. Please click here for DIRECTIONS and a CAMPUS MAP.

SUMMARY:2016 Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture Series - Cuba and the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Cuba and the U.S. \nSpeaker: Dr. Jennie Lincoln \nThe U.S. announced in December 2014 that\, after decades of isolation\, it has begun taking major steps to normalize relations with Cuba. The announcement marks a dramatic shift away from a policy that has its roots in one of the darkest moments of the Cold War — the Cuban missile crisis. Although the U.S. trade embargo is unlikely to end any time soon\, American and Cuban leaders today are trying to bring a relationship\, once defined by antithetical ideologies\, into the 21st century. \n

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Richard Strauss's "Elektra"
DESCRIPTION:Join Goethe for their latest lecture in their “A Note on Opera” series as they look at Richard Strauss’s “Elektra.” \n“Elektra” was the first collaboration between Strauss and the great German-language playwright\, the Austrian Hugo von Hoffmansthal. Their opera is a raw and brutal adaptation of the Greek legend about the doomed House of Agamemnon. Departing from its ancient Greek sources\, the opera’s sole focus is Elektra’s violent\, bloodthirsty obsession with avenging her father’s murder by her mother. Its lead role is arguably the most demanding in the dramatic soprano repertoire\, requiring a voice that can at times pierce through and at others soar over a 121-piece orchestra. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required.
