SUMMARY:Greenland and the Geopolitics of the Arctic Webinar
DESCRIPTION:As climate change accelerates the melting of Arctic ice\, the region is rapidly emerging as a new geopolitical frontier. The Arctic holds immense strategic value due to its untapped natural resources—estimated to include 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30% of its natural gas—as well as critical rare earth minerals essential for modern technologies. Melting ice is also opening new maritime routes that could significantly shorten global shipping times\, increasing the region’s economic and military importance. \n\n\n\nMajor powers\, including the United States\, Russia\, and China\, are expanding their presence in the Arctic\, viewing it as a key arena for influence\, resource competition\, and military positioning. The Arctic’s role in global security is further underscored by its proximity to the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom (GIUK) gap\, a vital chokepoint for NATO defense strategy. \n\n\n\nWithin this broader context\, the Trump Administration renewed U.S. focus on Greenland as a strategic asset. Greenland’s geographic location makes it a cornerstone of Arctic defense\, prompting the administration to place its military installations under U.S. Northern Command in 2025. The island’s vast reserves of rare earth minerals also attracted attention\, particularly as the U.S. sought to counter China’s dominance in critical supply chains. \n\n\n\nPresident Trump’s controversial proposal to purchase Greenland from Denmark\, while dismissed by both Danish and Greenlandic leaders\, reflected a broader ambition to assert U.S. dominance in the Arctic. However\, this approach drew criticism for marginalizing Greenlandic voices and treating the territory as a geopolitical commodity rather than recognizing its people as autonomous actors. As Greenland moves toward greater self-determination\, future U.S. engagement will need to balance strategic interests with respect for local governance and aspirations. \n\n\n\nThe World Affairs Council of Atlanta speaks with the authors of the book “Greenland – A Journey from the Earliest Times to a Modern Society\,” published in March 2025. Mira Kleist is Head of the Greenland Practice\, Kaya Partners. Jens Heinrich\, Ph.D. is Head of Mission\, Greenland Representation in Denmark. Bo Lidegaard\, Ph.D. is Co-founder\, Kaya Partners. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore Info

SUMMARY:A Luncheon and Discussion: "Is War Coming to the Arctic ?" with Dr. Thomas Rotnem
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is thinning the Arctic ice\, promising to create a northwest passage for international trade and reigniting the competition with Russia\, China\, and other countries over access to the region’s mineral resources. The historic ties of Russia and China and their Arctic ambitions reveal that the Arctic is likely to be an arena for future strategic competition. Furthermore\, Greenland has become a focus of the U.S. and other countries because of its strategic location as well as its mineral wealth.  \n\n\n\nRussia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has temporarily bolstered the West’s position in the Arctic\, as previously neutral Finland and Sweden joined NATO. Finland’s accession into NATO not only increased the NATO-Russia land boarder by over 650 percent\, and moved the defense alliance a mere 250 miles from St. Petersburg\, but it also contributed to creating a divided Arctic\, where nearly half belongs to NATO while the remaining half is Russian territory.  \n\n\n\nRussia already operates a third more Arctic military bases than the U.S. and its NATO allies. Now Putin is moving soldiers\, icebreakers\, warships\, and submarines\, many of them with nuclear capabilities\, to the region\, as well as conducting Arctic drills that test hypersonic missiles capable of evading American defense.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Thomas Rotnem\, Associate Director\, KSU \nThomas Rotnem is the Associate Director of the School of Government and International Affairs\, and Professor of Political Science at Kennesaw State University (KSU). His area of expertise is Comparative Politics\, with a specialization in Russian domestic and foreign politics. At KSU\, he teaches courses on Comparison Politics\, Russian Politics and Culture\, Russian Foreign Policy Comparative Democratization\, Arctic Policy\, and Politics and Security in a Changing Environment.  \n\n\n\nFor a little over a decade\, he’s been studying and writing about Russia’s policy interests in its Arctic realm\, as well as its evolving relationship with China in the region. He has received grants or fellowships from the Social Science Research Council\, IREX\, the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies\, the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars\, the U.S. Department of Education\, the U.S. Department of State\, the National Science Foundation\, and the Fulbright Organization (for lectureships or scholarships in the Russian Federation and Latvia). Most recently\, he has worked as a co-principle investigator on a NSF Grant studying climate change’s impact upon economies in Greenland and Iceland.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Circular City: How Atlanta Trades Sustainability Innovations With the World
DESCRIPTION:In an age of climate change and environmental emergency\, it’s trendy to speak of circularity — the concept of product life cycles that completely eliminate waste and pollution.  \n\n\n\nThe reality is much harder to achieve\, and in a free-market economy\, it depends largely on the money-making models underpinning the green innovation. Consumers\, meanwhile\, face the task of figuring out whether companies’ claims are as noble as they sound.  \n\n\n\nAchieving true sustainability\, then\, inevitably involves businesses balancing benefit for the world with profit and productivity\, often via incremental changes that don’t grab headlines or nab awards. \n\n\n\nAtlanta steers clear of big pronouncements on circularity\, but its ample global business connections have led to a cross-border environmental exchange mixing international innovations with local ingenuity.  \n\n\n\nJoin Global Atlanta and Atlanta International School at the school’s new wooded\, riverside Sandy Springs campus for a breakfast meeting with some of the top innovators in our circular city\, learning how their solutions are making a dent in some of the world’s most intractable problems.  \n\n\n\nWho should attend: \n\n\n\n\nBusiness leaders and tech startups\n\n\n\nVenture and impact investors\n\n\n\nConsulate and chamber reps\n\n\n\nProfessional service providers\n\n\n\nNonprofit executives\n\n\n\nEducators looking for industry partnerships\n\n\n\n\nOrganized by: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening Remarks:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRachel Hovington\, Principal\,AIS Sandy Springs \nRachel Hovington holds a Masters in Educational Leadership in International Education from the University of Bath\, UK\, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from The University of Nottingham\, UK and a Bachelors of Science Degree (Hons.) in Applied and Environmental Geology from the University of Birmingham\, UK. \n\n\n\nShe has served as the vice chair of the Board of the Academy for International School Heads (AISH)\, as well as being a member of the Board of the Association of German International Schools (AGIS) and served on the Board for the Center for The Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) and the Curriculum Advisory Committee for the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Furthermore\, she has led workshops on International Mindedness with Faculty and Staff in schools and locations all over the world as well as having consulted for aspiring IB schools that wish to enhance their international programs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFeatured Speakers:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChristian Bokich\,Director\, Government Relations and Public Affairs\, SK Battery America \nChristian Bokich has over 25 years of experience working in the auto industry. Having worked for VW\, Audi\, Lincoln\, Mercedes-Benz\, and now SK Battery America\, his wide variety of experience includes brand and product management\, advertising\, accessories & parts\, and communications. Christian joined SK Battery America in Commerce\, GA in October 2024\, and built up the company’s internal communications and culture-building strategy. He also strengthened communications amongst important stakeholders within Jackson County and the State of Georgia.  He lives in the City of Atlanta with his wife Stephanie\, daughter Alessandra who is in 6th grade at AIS\, and a handsome Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Freddy. Last but not least\, Christian is a proud product of Georgia’s Economic Development efforts\, having moved to Atlanta from New York City with Mercedes-Benz USA in June 2015. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Morris\,Founder and CEO\,Emrgy\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRamtin Motahar\,Founder and CEO\,Joulea\nWith bachelor degrees in economics and industrial engineering from Georgia Tech\, Ramtin Motahar has been involved in real estate development from an early age. His background in commercial real estate development\, engineering and construction led him to identify silos in the industry and the lack of an integrated development ecosystem\, resulting in higher energy usage and carbon emissions from commercial buildings. To answer these issues\, he pursued a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech with the goal of creating a novel approach to commercial real estate’s energy use practices. After a couple of years of research and testing\, He founded Joulea\, the built environment’s most accurate energy assessment platform to empower building owners to maximize profitability and minimize carbon footprint. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKarlos Walkes\,CEO and Co-founder\, XiQ\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlivier Brauen\, VP Circularity Business Solutions Development and Transformation Americas\, Michelin\nOlivier Brauen holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL)\, complemented with Master Degree in Business Administration from the IMD Business School. SUMMARY:Defining Statehood: Law\, Legitimacy\, and Global Power
DESCRIPTION:What Does It Mean to Be a State in the 21st Century?  \n\n\n\nThe definition of statehood remains one of the most complex and contested questions in international law and global politics. While the 1933 Montevideo Convention offers a four-part framework—population\, territory\, government\, and capacity for international relations—real-world statehood is shaped just as much by recognition\, legitimacy\, and geopolitical power.  \n\n\n\nIn today’s multipolar world\, where contested territories\, partial recognition\, and non-state actors challenge traditional norms\, how do we define what it means to be a state?  \n\n\n\nJoin The World Affairs Council for a virtual panel discussion featuring leading experts in international law\, diplomacy\, and global governance. Together\, we’ll explore:  \n\n\n\n\nCompeting theories of sovereignty—declarative vs. constitutive \n\n\n\n\n\nThe role of recognition and effective governance in state legitimacy \n\n\n\n\n\nHow legal frameworks are adapting to new global realities\n\n\n\n\n\nThe impact of these debates on foreign policy and conflict resolution \n\n\n\n\nWhether you’re a legal scholar\, policy professional\, student of international relations\, or simply curious about how the world defines its borders and actors—this conversation is for you.  \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiane Marie Amann\, Professor\, Regent University\nDiane Marie Amann is Regents’ Professor of International Law and holds the Emily & Ernest Woodruff Chair in International Law at the University of Georgia School of Law. Since she joined the Georgia Law faculty in 2011\, Amann has taught Constitutional Law\, Public International Law\, International Human Rights\, Laws of War\, NATO\, Children & International Law\, Refugee & Asylum Law\, Criminal Law\, International Criminal Law and Transnational Criminal Law. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGezim Visoka\, Associate Dean of Research and Professor\, Dublin City University \nGezim Visoka is Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies in the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University (DCU). Dr Visoka is a leading international scholar on statehood and state recognition\, and post-conflict peacebuilding and statebuilding. His research focuses on the making\, remaking\, and unmaking of states and peace processes in contemporary world politics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRicky Bevington\, President\, World Affairs Council of Atlanta\nRickey Bevington is an Emmy award-winning journalist\, President of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta\, and Executive in Residence at Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business. SUMMARY:Patacones\, Paintbrushes\, & Power Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:A multi-disciplinary exploration of Panama–U.S. cross-cultural exchange\, Patacones\, Paintbrushes\, and Power celebrates the transformative collaborations between Taller Portobelo on Panama’s Caribbean coast and the U.S.-based Creative Currents Artist Collaborative. Spanning painting\, photography\, performance\, oral history\, and cultural exchange\, this exhibition reveals how African American and Afro-Latin artists have fueled activism\, identity\, and community through shared creative practice. \n\n\n\n“In a time of cultural erasure and division\, Patacones\, Paintbrushes\, and Power is both archive and blueprint for liberation\,” says co-curator Dr. Renée Alexander Craft\, a UNC-Chapel Hill professor and scholar who has spent over two decades researching Portobelo’s vibrant Congo traditions. “It insists on the fullness of Black life—its contradictions\, its beauty\, its joy\, and its enduring capacity to shape the world.” \n\n\n\nCelebrate the launch of Patacones\, Paintbrushes\, and Power with an evening of art\, conversation\, and community. Enjoy light bites and refreshments\, immerse yourself in the vibrant sounds of live music\, and connect with artists\, curators\, and fellow art lovers in an intimate setting surrounded by powerful works from across the African Diaspora. \n\n\n\nThis is more than an opening—it’s a gathering of voices\, stories\, and visions that honor the legacy of Afro-Panamanian and African American collaboration. Come be part of the dialogue\, the celebration\, and the beauty. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Doing Business in the NEWEcuador - the Noboa Era
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Embassy in Quito invites U.S. companies of all sizes to participate in a webinar to discuss Ecuador’s current investment and business climate. Join Chargé d’Affaires\, a.i.\, Lawrence Petroni for a discussion of new opportunities and challenges in Ecuador.  \n\n\n\nEcuador\, with a population of over 18 million inhabitants\, and growing at nearly one percent per year\, is a small-to-medium market for U.S. exports. The U.S.–Ecuador trade and investment relationship has significantly strengthened over the last few years.  Ecuador is an important commercial partner for the United States in South America\, and both countries have taken concrete steps to deepen trade\, investment\, and regulatory cooperation. \n\n\n\nPresident Daniel Noboa\, originally elected in October 2023\, won re-election on April 13\, 2025\, to a full\, four-year through May 2029.  Immediately following Noboa’s re-election\, Ecuador’s country risk dropped 800 basis points on investors’ expectation that he will continue to run a pro-trade\, pro-business administration with center-right policies and enjoy a strong bilateral relationship with the United States.  \n\n\n\nWhy Ecuador \n\n\n\n\nThe U.S. is a major foreign investor in Ecuador\, particularly in energy\, agriculture\, mining\, franchising\, and telecom sectors.\n\n\n\nEcuador’s use of the U.S. dollar as its national currency (since 2000) creates a stable environment for trade and investment.\n\n\n\nIn 2024\, the United States exported $7.5 billion in goods to Ecuador.\n\n\n\nU.S. products have high levels of acceptance and associated with quality and innovation.\n\n\n\nClose geographic proximity to the U.S. reduces shipping times.\n\n\n\nIncreased market access in certain export sectors.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Philosophy as translation: A conversation with Souleymane Bachir Diagne
DESCRIPTION:Villa Albertine and Emory University are delighted to welcome philosopher Souleymane Bachir Diagne to Atlanta for a conversation on philosophy\, translation\, and transatlantic dialogues\, with Associate Professor of French and African Studies Subha Xavier. \n\n\n\nSouleymane Bachir Diagne is a leading philosopher and public intellectual from Senegal. Professor Emeritus of French and Philosophy at Columbia University\, he directed the Institute of African Studies for a decade. His work bridges African\, Islamic\, and European intellectual traditions\, offering a vision of philosophy as a truly global\, plural\, and dialogical practice. \n\n\n\nAuthor of numerous landmark books\, Diagne has illuminated fields ranging from Islamic thought to African philosophy\, postcolonial studies\, and the history of ideas. His major works include Bergson Postcolonial: The Elan Vital in the Thought of Léopold Sédar Senghor and Muhammad Iqbal (2011)\, The Ink of the Scholars: Reflections on Philosophy in Africa (2016)\, Open to Reason: Muslim Philosophers in Conversation with the Western Tradition (2018)\, and Postcolonial Bergson (2019). More recently\, he has reexamined universalism in In Search of Africa(s): Universalism and Decolonial Thought (2022)\, explored aesthetics and identity in African Art as Philosophy: Senghor\, Bergson and the Idea of Negritude (2023)\, and developed a compelling theory of translation in From Language to Language: The Hospitality of Translation (2024). \n\n\n\nFor Diagne\, translation is not merely a linguistic exercise but a philosophical act of hospitality—a way of making ideas travel across languages\, cultures\, and histories while preserving their multiplicity. In this spirit\, he has consistently advocated for philosophy as a practice of openness\, dialogue\, and mutual transformation across traditions. \n\n\n\nHis contributions have been widely recognized: he received the Edouard Glissant Award in 2011\, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019\, and in 2024 was named Chaire du Louvre in Paris. \n\n\n\nThis Atlanta conversation will be an opportunity to engage with one of today’s most inspiring thinkers\, and to reflect on how philosophy\, like translation\, can serve as a bridge across cultures and worlds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More
