The vision for the community of Serenbe was born in an effort to protect the beautiful rural land just outside of Atlanta known as Chattahoochee Hill Country. The first house at Serenbe was built in 2004 and today the community is home to over 650 residents. Serenbe has won numerous awards including the Urban Land Institute Inaugural Sustainability Award\, the Atlanta Regional Commission “Development of Excellence“ and EarthCraft named Serenbe the “Development of the Year.” \nThe visit to Serenbe starts with a self-guided tour of this year’s showhouse which is located in the new Mado neighborhood. Mado’s European style designs are inspired by the clean lines of Scandinavian architecture. Visually and conceptually\, Mado was strongly inspired by the time Nygren spent in Sweden.

DESCRIPTION:When Latino migration to the U.S. South became increasingly visible in the 1990s\, observers and advocates grasped for ways to analyze “new” racial dramas in the absence of historical reference points. However\, as this book is the first to comprehensively document\, Mexicans and Mexican Americans have a long history of migration to the U.S. South. Corazon de Dixie recounts the untold histories of Mexicanos’ migrations to New Orleans\, Mississippi\, Arkansas\, Georgia\, and North Carolina as far back as 1910. It follows Mexicanos into the heart of Dixie\, where they navigated the Jim Crow system\, cultivated community in the cotton fields\, purposefully appealed for help to the Mexican government\, shaped the southern conservative imagination in the wake of the civil rights movement\, and embraced their own version of suburban living at the turn of the twenty-first century. \nRooted in U.S. and Mexican archival research\, oral history interviews\, and family photographs\, Corazón de Dixie unearths not just the facts of Mexicanos’ long-standing presence in the U.S. South but also their own expectations\, strategies\, and dreams. \nJulie M. Weise is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in U.S. and Latin American history in 2009. From 2001-2\, she worked in the administration of Mexico’s President Vicente Fox as a speechwriter and researcher for the cabinet-level Office of the President for Mexicans Living Abroad. She has also worked as a translator\, paralegal\, project manager\, and policy researcher at immigration-related agencies in New Haven and Los Angeles. \nJavier Díaz de León serves as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta. Diaz is a member of the Mexican Foreign Service since 1991 and holds the rank of Ambassador since April 28th\, 2017. During his diplomatic career he has held various positions: Deputy Consul General in San Diego; Deputy Consul General in New York\, Head of the Office for Migration and Hispanic Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico in the United States\, and Executive Director of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City. In May 2016\, he was appointed as Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta\, Georgia\, serving in this position since June 18th\, 2016. The Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta oversees the states of Georgia\, Alabama\, and most of Tennessee.

Having covered the Clinton\, Bush\, Obama\, and Trump administrations and correctly predicted the outcome of the last elections\, we now look forward to hearing his take on the future US election and the questions surrounding it: which states will be key battlegrounds? Will the development of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine impact Trump’s chances of re-election? And how close will this election be? \nAbout the Speaker  \n \nJon Decker was elected to the Board of the White House Correspondents’ Association in 2015. He is on the faculty of Georgetown University and the UCLA School of Law where he is an Adjunct Professor. He is the only lawyer in the White House Press Corps. Decker started his career as a financial analyst on Wall Street and has since worked for numerous prestigious media outlets\, for radio and television\, and as a field producer for NBC in Miami. He has served as a Media Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and was also an aide to the late US Senator John Heinz. In the past two decades\, he has reported from numerous cities on five different continents\, The Columbia Journalism Review has called Jon “refreshingly self-aware-for-a-reporter”.
