He graduated as a Water and Forestry Engineer from the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences in Gembloux\, Belgium. \nHe first started a career in the private sector\, as a specialist in geographic databases and earth observation systems.  \nAt the age of 30\, he passed the diplomatic competition and joined Foreign Affairs\, becoming Embassy Secretary in Geneva (WTO and WIPO\, from 2005 to 2008) and then in Beijing (2008-2012). After a year at the Directorate General of European Affairs (trade policy department)\, he returned to China\, to Guangzhou\, to head the office for the promotion of exports and investments of the Walloon Region (2013-2016). During that time he was also appointed to the Governing Board of the American International School of Guangzhou. \nUpon his return to Brussels\, he became an advisor at the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the European Union\, in charge of trade\, research\, and space (2016-2017)\, after which he became Chief of Staff to the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union (2017-2019). \nIn 2019 he joined the cabinet of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders before becoming Deputy Chief of Staff to Minister of Foreign Affairs Philippe Goffin (2019-2020). In that capacity\, he sat on one of the main pandemic management bodies. \nMichel Gerebtzoff took office as Consul General of Belgium in Atlanta on August 1\, 2020. He is married and the father of two daughters.  \n\n  \n\n\nArd van der Vorst took up his appointment in Atlanta as Consul General for the Kingdom of the Netherlands in January 2019. Ard is the senior Netherlands government representative in the Southeast United States responsible for relations with the states of Georgia\, Tennessee\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Alabama. He leads a team\, which works to promote NL-US trade and investment\, support Dutch nationals\, conduct public diplomacy on key issues\, and build scientific and research co-operation. \nBefore taking up his posting in Atlanta\, Ard served as Head of the Spokesman Office and Newsroom at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague. He was also Dutch Consul in San Francisco from 2012 to 2015. Throughout both of these postings\, Ard’s main focus was on communication\, economic\, and foreign policy ties between the Netherlands and the US. \nPrior to his posting in San Francisco\, he was Head of Development Cooperation at the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah\, Political coordinator on Western Balkan Affairs in The Hague\, and working on a range of issues linked to development cooperation\, security policy\, trade\, and European Union. Ard joined the NL’s diplomatic service in 1997. He has also served overseas in Nigeria and Albania. \nArd was born in Breda\, the Netherlands. He has a master’s degree in Public Administration at the University of Leiden. His husband\, Pieter\, accompanies him in Atlanta. \nFollow Ard on twitter @NLinAtlanta \n  \n \nCiara O’Floinn took up duty as Consul General of Ireland in Atlanta\, in August 2020. The Consulate General covers the Southeast states of Georgia\, Alabama\, Florida\, North Carolina\, South Carolina\, and Tennessee. A career diplomat\, Ciara has a strong background and experience in EU affairs and EU foreign policy\, including EU-US relations and security and defense issues. \nOriginally from Dalkey in Co. Dublin\, Ciara was educated at Loreto Abbey Dalkey primary and secondary schools. She graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2004 with a First Class Honours Degree in European Studies\, having spent a year of her degree studying in Strasbourg\, France. She holds an M.A. in European Political Studies from the College of Europe’s Natolin campus in Warsaw. \nCiara worked as a political staffer at the European Parliament in Brussels for 2 years before joining the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2007. Her assignments have included a posting to Ireland’s representation to the EU in Brussels\, where she worked on Ireland’s EU Presidency in 2013. She has also served in the Department’s Protocol Division and spent a year at the Department of the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) working on EU affairs.  From 2014 – 2018 she was seconded as a national expert to the EU Institutions\, working at the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels where she served as an advisor to the Deputy Secretary-General for Security and Defence and Crisis Management\, covering EU-US and EU-NATO relations. \nHer most recent assignment prior to Atlanta was as Deputy Director of the Strategy\, Governance and Change Unit in Dublin\, working on the implementation of Department-wide thematic strategies and overseeing reviews of the Department’s network of missions abroad. \nCiara is married to Caoimhín Ó Coigligh\, also an Irish diplomat. SUMMARY:US-China Relations: "The Quarreling Couple That Still Needs to Dance Together"
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese Globalization Association and SFU’s Jack Austin Center for Asia Pacific Business Studies are pleased to present a keynote speech by a distinguished Professor of Management and Global Business\, Farok J. Contractor. In this keynote speech\, Farok J. Contractor will explore the potential for economic collaboration between China and the United States. \nThe talk will examine the future of the US-China relationship and policy dilemmas between these two global powers. \nThe webinar will also feature Eric Werker\, William Saywell Professor at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University\, as the discussant. \nThe webinar will be co-moderated by Jing Li\, the Co-Director of the Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies of SFU’s Beedie School of Business\, and by John R. McIntyre\, founding Director of the Georgia Tech Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). \n  \nPresentation Abstract\nDespite enormous economic complementarities and synergies between the US and China\, the current relationship is akin to a quarreling couple that still needs each other because of the 639 billion in bilateral trade in goods and services\, and the “Direct Investment Position” of the two countries combined exceeding $ 130 billion\, in 2019. \nPutting aside nationalism and ambitions – whether political or corporate – there is no structural or fundamental reason why the two economies should not cooperate on a broad range of issues and sectors\, ranging from healthcare to green energy to vehicles\, for mutual benefit. \nHowever\, because of psychosomatic anti-globalization reactions in the US after 2016\, and in China an exaggerated sense of nationalism and nursing 178-year-old grievances that bear little relevance to the present day\, the two largest economies are now in an artificial state of tension. \nThis presentation will focus on the potential future relationship and policy dilemmas. Here are just two examples: China’s portraying itself as the new champion of globalization which then also requires its grudging acceptance of universally accepted rules. For the US\, one policy dilemma is how to maintain an open-innovation environment while dealing with the real and imagined ghosts of intellectual asset theft. But there remain the vast majority of areas\, sectors\, and subjects on which the two biggest economies can cooperate\, for mutual benefit. \n  \nSpeaker Bio \nFarok J. Contractor (Ph.D.) is a Distinguished Professor of Management and Global Business at Rutgers Business School\, a Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB)\, and author of ten books and over 150 scholarly articles. He is the President; Elect of AIB and will serve a three-year term on the Board\, assuming the presidency in 2021. He has taught courses and seminars in China over 20 times. He holds a Ph.D. (Managerial Science and Applied Economics) and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School\, as well as two engineering degrees M.S. (Michigan)\, and B.S. (Bombay). Farok Contractor’s research focuses on key issues in International Business\, such as corporate alliances\, outsourcing and offshoring\, valuation of intangible assets\, the technology transfer process\, licensing\, and foreign direct investment. His papers and books have been cited more than 12\,000 times and is among the top-ranked contributors of scholarly papers in the field. Farok has chaired or been on the supervisory committees of 19 doctoral dissertations. He has taught at the Wharton School\, Copenhagen Business School\, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy\, Tufts University\, Nanyang Technological University\, Indian Institutes of Management (IIM; Ahmedabad and Calcutta)\, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade\, XLRI (India)\, Rutgers business programs in Beijing and Shanghai\, Lubin School of Business\, and EDHEC in France\, and conducted executive seminars on four continents. He served Rutgers as Department Chair\, CIBER (Center for International Business Education and Research) Research Director\, Ph.D. program coordinator\, and other key school and university initiatives. DESCRIPTION:These ONLINE Japanese language courses emphasize communication skills needed for business\, virtual meetings\, and social interaction.  The courses also integrate values of the Japanese market so that students will not only develop competence in the language but also acknowledge the business and cultural environments of Japan. For new students with prior experience with the Japanese language\, a telephone interview will be held\, if necessary\, to determine a student’s appropriate class level. \n  \nAll classes begin the week of October 12\, 2020\, and continue for 8 weeks. Classes are held for 2 hours ONLINE via the Zoom web conference system. Please note\, meeting time is subject to change. The cost for the course is $200 for JASG members and $245 for non-members (please include the amount in check). All non-members who enroll will be given full one-year membership into The Society ($45 value). In this role\, Tom advances the company’s integrated approach to cybersecurity across all aspects of people\, capital\, and technology risk. Tom previously worked as the Chief Strategy Officer of Ark Network Security Solutions. He also served as Senior Cybersecurity Strategist and Counsel with the Department of Homeland Security’s National Protection and Programs Directorate. While at DHS\, Tom established and led the agency’s cybersecurity insurance initiative in support of implementation of Executive Order 13636\, “Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity.” To advance that effort\, he created DHS’ Cyber Incident Data and Analysis Working Group (CIDAWG)\, a private-public engagement forum that examined how a cyber incident data repository could help meet the information and analysis requirements of the insurance industry and technical cybersecurity professionals. \nTom previously served as the Staff Director and Counsel for the Subcommittee on Intelligence\, Information Sharing and Terrorism Risk Assessment with the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security. During his time with the Committee\, he authored two major reports that informed many of the statutory provisions that he helped develop for Title V of the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 (P.L. 110-53) and the Reducing Over-Classification Act of 2010 (P.L. 111-258). Tom is a former Assistant General Counsel at the FBI. He has also worked in private litigation practice. \nTom earned his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Her exhibit\, “Promesas de Papel/Paper Promises\,” will be featured in the upcoming virtual OUMA exhibition set to premiere on October 30th. Tavera’s work explores race\, ethnicity\, gender\, migration\, and cultural amalgamation through iconography found in Latin American legends\, commercial packaging\, media\, politics\, comics\, maps\, currency\, graffiti\, and games. The upcoming exhibit will feature several of her newest pieces created in the wake of national protests. \nJavier Díaz de León\, the Consul General of Mexico to Atlanta\, and Nicholas Ladany\, Ph.D.\, President of Oglethorpe University\, will provide opening remarks. This conversation will be moderated by two OU students: Rebecca Castro ’22 and Claudia Fernanda Martinez ’22 and hosted by Elizabeth Peterson\, OUMA Director. \nThis event is hosted by the OU Museum of Art and the OU Diversity Equity and Inclusion Taskforce and presented in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
