SUMMARY:Celebrate AAPI Heritage Month: "First To Go" Film Screening & Director Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Japan-America Society of Georgia celebrates Asian-American Heritage Month through a screening of the short film\, First to Go: Story of the Kataoka Family\, a story of a young girl’s father who was forced from his home and family in 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was first and 120\,000 Americans were next to be forced to relocate to desolate Internment Camps throughout the country. Join us after the 20-minute screening for a behind-the-scenes talk with Director & Producer\, Myles Matsuno\, and discover how we can find hope\, love\, and happiness in the darkest of places and explore how cultural understanding can lead to new ways of promoting peace & harmony in your life. \nFilm: First to Go: Story of the Kataoka Family \nLength: 21 min \nLogline: One December morning in San Francisco\, a young girl’s father was forced from his home and family. He was first and 120\,000 Americans were next. This is her story. \nSynopsis: A couple hours after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941\, Ichiro Kataoka was the first San Francisco Japanese prisoner taken by the FBI from his hotel in Japan Town. Through a series of unfortunate events\, Ichiro would eventually reunite with his family three years later in Topaz\, Utah after President Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066\, which forced all Japanese residing on the West Coast to relocate to desolate Internment Camps throughout the country. Their only crime was being of Japanese ancestry.  \nDecades later\, though a collection of footage\, the Kataoka family legacy is being told through Ichiro’s daughter\, great grandson\, and relatives of what this family had endured. Although this was a dark time in America’s history\, we find that love and happiness can blossom in the darkest of places. \nDirected & Produced: Myles Matsuno \nWebsite & Trailer: www.mylesmatsuno.com/first-to-go-story-of-the-kataoka-family

SUMMARY:Russia's Ukraine Invasion: Implications for the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:Russia\, with 1/5th of its land mass north of the Arctic Circle\, and two million Russians of a four million population inhabiting the region\, has forced its Arctic neighbors to re-assess an angry Russia\, stung by its Ukrainian experience. Does this experience convince Russia not to engage in any changes in its current Arctic policy — or\, will increasing economic sanctions force Russia to think anew about the vast resources in the Arctic seabed? Russia’s Arctic neighbors face the necessity of an accurate assessment in these extremely troubled times. \nAt this event\, Dr. Thomas Rotnem will speak extensively about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and its effects on the Arctic. \nGuest Speaker\nDr. Thomas Rotnem \nProfessor of Political Science and Associate Director\, \nSchool of Government and International Affairs\, \nKennesaw State University \nDr. Rotnem is a professor of political science in Kennesaw State University’s Department of Political Science & International Affairs. Having come to the department in Fall 2015\, he teaches courses in comparative politics and international relations. \nAt his previous university\, he received the Teacher of the Year award (2011-2012); before that\, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award twice (in 2001 and 2010)\, was nominated for the award in 2005\, and was awarded the Student Government Association’s Faculty of the Year award in 2007. \nDr. Rotnem earned dual B.A. degrees in Political Science and International Studies and an M.A. in Political Science from Ohio University. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Ohio State University\, as well as a Graduate Certificate as Specialist in Russian Area Studies. In addition\, since coming to Georgia\, he has earned a M.B.A. (in Finance) from Georgia State University. \nHis concentrations within political science are in comparative politics and international political economy\, with a specialization in Russian domestic and foreign politics. His research has focused special attention upon the democratization and “resource curse” literatures in comparative politics and international political economy. He has published papers and articles on a variety of subjects\, including social welfare policies in transitioning economies\, foreign direct investment in emerging markets\, and the politics of oil and natural gas in resource-rich petro-states. Dr. Rotnem has most recently published a chapter in an edited volume on Sino-Russian engagement in Northeast Asia\, a region of particular and on-going interest in his work. \nReceiving grants from a variety of sources has enabled Dr. Rotnem to carry on much of the aforementioned scholarly work. In the past\, he has received grants and/or fellowships from the U.S. Department of State\, the U.S. Department of Education\, the Social Science Research Council\, the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX)\, the American Council for Collaboration in Education and Language Study/American Council for Teachers of Russian (ACCELS/ACTR)\, and the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies. \nDr. Rotnem has presented his research at conferences and symposia in the United States and abroad. Two of particular formative significance for him were week-long symposia under the auspices of the Salzburg Seminar that focused upon U.S. foreign policy in Northeast Asia and Russia’s future political development. Another exceptionally formative experience for him was that as a Fulbright Lecturing Award recipient in 2010\, an experience that allowed him to engage and interact with international students and scholars in Eastern Europe. \nBeyond his teaching and research interests\, Dr. Rotnem has recently served as the President of the Georgia Political Science Association (GPSA)\, the second-largest statewide political science organization in the United States. Dr. Rotnem also serves as one of two Editors-in-Chief of Questions in Politics\, a refereed publication of the GPSA.

SUMMARY:Canada and Georgia: Teaming Up For Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Georgia has always enjoyed a steadfast partnership with Canada\, its largest export buyer. But in the last few years\, trade disputes followed by a pandemic have brought uncharacteristic uncertainty to the usually vibrant U.S.-Canada relationship. \nThe two sides have discovered a renewed sense of purposeful collaboration\, especially as supply-chain challenges and geopolitical upheaval force a rethinking of globalization. \nThe return of the Southeast U.S.-Canadian Provinces Alliance’s annual conference to Savannah June 19-20 provides an ample occasion to reflect on the state of Georgia-Canada ties and uncover prospects for future investment and trade partnership. \nGlobal Atlanta recently completed a preview trip to Quebec\, the province that helped spearhead the alliance 15 years ago along with Georgia. The itinerary included interviews with cutting-edge companies in complementary industries such as health\, aerospace\, film\, energy and electric mobility — all areas where a collaborative approach could make both sides stronger. \nJoin Managing Editor Trevor Williams and a panel of experts at the Cobb Chamber of Commerce June 7 at 5 p.m.\, as Global Atlanta recaps the trip\, releases a special report and renews the conversation on Georgia-Canada ties in Atlanta\, starting with a focus on Quebec. \nSpeakers:\n\nKeynote Address: James Hill\, Consul General of Canada in Atlanta\nOpening Remarks: Dina Khismatulina\, Atlanta Managing Attorney\, The Manely Firm\n\nCanadian Company Presentations:\n\n*Jean-François Marchand\, Marketing Director\, UgoWork\n*Julianna Egressy\, VP of Supply Chain\, Medicom Inc.\n*Patrick Gervais\, VP Marketing and communications\, LION Electric\n\nPanel Discussion:\n\nModerated by: Trevor Williams\, Managing Editor\, Global Atlanta\nLaura Dawson\, Executive Director\, Future Borders Coalition \n\nDavid Weiner\, Delegate\, Quebec Delégation Atlanta\n\n*Benoit Montreuil\, Coca-Cola Chair in Material Handling and Distribution; Director\, Supply Chain & Logistics Institute\, Georgia Institute of Technology\n\n*Virtual speakers \nSpeakers Bios\nJames Hill \nConsul General of Canada in Atlanta \nMr. Hill most recently served as Canada’s ambassador to Costa Rica; he enjoyed serving as the envoy to that Central American country as well as Honduras and Nicaragua. It will also cause a chain reaction with autonomous driving and car-sharing and will spread to service industries such as insurance and logistics\, involving the IT industry. \nThis presentation will provide an overview of the structural changes related to the shift to EVs and report on budding initiatives to seize these changes as opportunities. \nA light lunch will be included along with your registration. We look forward to seeing you there! \nSPEAKERS\n\nHiro Ishizaki\, Partner of NRI-America\nAki Fujita\, Principal of NRI-America\n\nThis is a hybrid event.
