SUMMARY:Commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Berlin Airlift & Sharing Veteran Memories
DESCRIPTION:The Consulate General of Germany in Atlanta and the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta invite to join our friendship get-together with German food and an exhibition celebrating 75th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift. \n\n\n\n– visit an exhibit about the Berliner Luftbrücke / Berlin AirLift on the occasion of the 75th anniversary– bring mementos from being stationed in or having visited Germany to share with fellow Germany enthusiasts– Open Mic to Share German-American Experiences\, stories and memories– enjoy a catered dinner– introduction of the brand-new GoetheATL project “Veterans for Freundschaft” \n\n\n\nSEATS ARE LIMITED. Get your tickets today! \n\n\n\nHistorical Background: \n\n\n\nThe Berlin Blockade (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany\, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ railway\, road\, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche Mark from West Berlin. \n\n\n\nThe Western Allies organized the Berlin Airlift (German: Berliner Luftbrücke\, lit. “Berlin Air Bridge”) from 26 June 1948 to 30 September 1949 to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin\, a difficult feat given the size of the city and the population. American and British air forces flew over Berlin more than 250\,000 times\, dropping necessities such as fuel and food\, with the original plan being to lift 3\,475 tons[clarification needed] of supplies daily.[citation needed] By the spring of 1949\, that number was often met twofold\, with the peak daily delivery totaling 12\,941 tons. Among these was the work of the later concurrent Operation Little Vittles in which candy-dropping aircraft dubbed “raisin bombers” generated much goodwill among German children. \n\n\n\nHaving initially concluded there was no way the airlift could work\, the Soviets found its continued success an increasing embarrassment. On 12 May 1949\, the USSR lifted the blockade of West Berlin\, due to economic issues in East Berlin\, although for a time the Americans and British continued to supply the city by air as they were worried that the Soviets would resume the blockade and were only trying to disrupt western supply lines. The Berlin Airlift officially ended on 30 September 1949 after fifteen months. The US Air Force had delivered 1\,783\,573 tons (76.4% of total) and the RAF 541\,937 tons (23.3% of total)\, totaling 2\,334\,374 tons\, nearly two-thirds of which was coal\, on 278\,228 flights to Berlin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:International Business Webinar Series: The Varieties of Populism – Their Rise and Impact on Business & Society
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we have seen the rise of many populist leaders and parties across the globe. This has led to rising interest in the phenomenon of populism. However\, this interest\, particularly in the public domain has led to naive and stereotypical definitions and views on populism based on a few prominent contemporary cases. Yet populism has a long historical tradition\, particularly in the United States and South America\, and has its roots all the way back to Ancient Rome. In this webinar\, we discuss the nature of populism and its varieties\, and why today it is a mixture of factors we have seen before. Some appear new and unique but are still within the bounds of our understanding. \n\n\n\nKey takeaways: \n\n\n\n\nGain a clearer perspective on the populist wave of the last decade.\n\n\n\nAcquire a better understanding of how companies have\, and can\, address\, the political reality they are facing.\n\n\n\nDevelop an understanding of how the political structure of different countries can influence their susceptibility to the influence of fringe political ideologies.\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar is FREE and open to all\, but registration is required. \n\n\n\nZoom details will be sent to all registered participants. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:A Discussion on Global Climate Change with Dr. Patrick Allitt
DESCRIPTION:Join the Atlanta Council on International Relations for an exclusive talk by Dr. Patrick Allitt a Cahoon Family Professor of American History at Emory University. Anxiety about climate change has a long history\, including alarms about excessive heat and cold.  These concerns rose to a climax in the late twentieth century as industrialization accelerated around the world.  Agreements on atmospheric management\, starting in the 1960s\, showed a shared agreement about the severity of these problems\, but enforcement has never been easy. We invite the Atlanta community to join us for a discussion on this critical topic. \n\n\n\nRegistration is Required for this Event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Patrick Allitt\,Cahoon Family Professor of American History\,Emory University\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar: Racial Inclusion in the Films and Audiovisual Arts Industry
DESCRIPTION:The film and audiovisual arts industry plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions\, influencing cultural narratives\, and fostering social change. In Colombia\, Afro-Colombians have long faced underrepresentation and misrepresentation in media\, particularly in film and television. Despite being one of the largest ethnic groups in the country\, Afro-Colombians are often excluded from the narratives that shape national identity and culture. In response Pilas Colombia (PilasCol) has emerged as a leading force in promoting racial inclusion and diversity within Colombia’s audiovisual industry. \n\n\n\nThrough a wide array of projects and initiatives\, PilasCol has made significant strides in creating a more inclusive audiovisual industry while championing the preservation of Black cultural heritage and the advancement of Afro-Colombian cultural industries. \n\n\n\nThis panel discussion will explore PILASCOL’s work in promoting racial inclusion in Colombia’s film and audiovisual arts industry. The discussion will feature the CEO and Executive Producer of Pilas Colombia\, Edwin Salcedo\, who will share insights into the organization’s mission\, achievements\, and vision for a more equitable and diverse media landscape. \n\n\n\nThe Executive Producer will also present the organization’s latest film project\, the mini-series Fronteras\, which aims to highlight Colombia’s ethnic and cultural diversity while enhancing the country’s image in the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Art of Diplomacy Tour -- Cuba 2025
DESCRIPTION:The trip in January will be a 5-day policy trip to Havana. This will be an educational people-to-people exchange focused on Cuban culture and US-Cuba history\, relations\, and policy. Meet with Cuban entrepreneurs\, civil society reps\, artists and musicians\, academics\, diplomats at the US Embassy\, and (hopefully) a senior official from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs. See as much of Havana as we can and meet as many Cubans as possible! While Spanish language skills are great\, they are not necessary for this trip.  \n\n\n\nFor logistics on the ground in Cuba\, Arts of Diplomacy Tours partners with a private US company called Cuba Educational Travel (CET). You will get around Havana in  classic American cars and stay in beautiful\, privately-owned boutique hotels clustered in the neighborhood of Vedado. They are comfortable\, but not luxurious.  The rooms are comfortable and have private baths and air conditioning. \n\n\n\nWith enough lead time the schedule can be shaped to fit your interests.  On previous trips meetings were arranged with a senior surgeon\, a psychologist\, a professor at the school of art\, and a political insider as well as visited the synagogue and a hospital. \n\n\n\nThe trip assumes early afternoon arrival in Havana on Thursday\, January 23 and departure the late afternoon of Monday\, January 27. Participants will make their own flight arrangements. Delta and American fly to Havana through Miami. Other airlines have non-stop flights from Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale. For a specific itinerary visit https://www.globalatlanta.com/wp-content/uploads/ArtofDiplomacy-Cuba-Program-January-2025-itinerary.pdf \n\n\n\nThis trip meets all US government regulations for travel to Cuba by American citizens and permanent residents. The cost of the trip is $3\,250 single occupancy\, and $2\,750 double occupancy. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please check out the flyer for the January trip attached below in the Download Flyer button.  Attached is a tentative itinerary for January and the sales agreement to sign up. \n\n\n\nIf you are interested\, please send a deposit of $1\,000 via check to secure your spot.
