SUMMARY:The Untold History of Korematsu v United States (1944)
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Japan-America Society of Georgia for a discussion about the landmark Supreme Court case Korematsu v. United States(1944) and its aftermath. Korematsu covers a story of internment and violations of the constitutional rights of Japanese-Americans who resided in a West Coast “military area” during World War II. While everyone is familiar with World War II\, this story of “a grave injustice\,” “race prejudice\, war hysteria and a failure of political leadership” remains less known.  Don’t miss this relevant and memorable program.

SUMMARY:Breakfast with Dr. Sergey Lagodinsky - “The New German Self and Its Facets”
DESCRIPTION:The recent rise of right-wing populists in almost all European countries has been alarmingly fast. The political establishment seems to have been caught by surprise. Yet most of the tendencies in Europe and in Germany have been there for years. What characterizes the new European populism\, and how can it be explained and (if necessary) countered? Dr. Lagodinsky will offer some explanations and analytical frameworks to grasp the phenomenon that will probably dominate the political discourse in Europe for the foreseeable future.

SUMMARY:A Note on Opera: Giuseppi Verdi's "Don Carlo"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our latest lecture in our “A Note on Opera” series as we look at Giuseppe Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”\nThe plays of Goethe’s close friend Friedrich von Schiller have inspired operas composed by as diverse a group as Donizetti\, Tchaikovsky\, and Verdi; Verdi alone based no less than five of his operas on Schiller’s works. His adaptation of Schiller’s “Don Carlos” was his largest and most innovative composition to date. Set in Habsburg Spain during the reign of Philip II\, it’s a sweeping tale of conflicts within the family that rules a quarter of the world and of individuals against an oppressive theocracy. \nCourse to be taught in English by David Kerr. No pre-existing knowledge of music required. \nAdmission: Advance by one week prior: $10 for Goethe-Zentrum/Alliance Francaise members; $20 for non-members\, At the Door: $15 Members\, $25 Non-Members. \nPlease use the link to register in advance for discounted rates.
