SUMMARY:Irish Movie Night: La Dernière Bande / Krapp's Last Tape
DESCRIPTION:Join the Francophonie Festival for a double screening in French and English of Samuel Beckett’s play La Dernière Bande / Krapp’s Last Tape\nAbout this Event\nDouble Screening of Samuel Beckett’s play La Dernière Bande with Roland Bertin (in French – no subtitles) followed by the English version\, Krapp’s Last Tape. \nSamuel Beckett translated and directed many of his own plays which were written in French and English. He did not give interviews\, but he did grant permission for this filmed record of his own direction of En attendant Godot / Waiting for Godot; Fin de partie / Endgame; La Dernière bande / Krapp’s Last Tape. The productions are intended to be films of benchmark productions\, rather than film adaptations of stage performances. From the series\, Beckett Directs Beckett\, these films of productions in the France and the United States were authorized by Samuel Beckett\, and directed by Walter D. Asmus. \nThe opportunity to see a play written in English and translated into French by the author\, as it is performed side by side\, is a unique experience. \nSynopsis: On his birthday each year\, Krapp records his annual memoir – speaking into the tape recorder about its highs and lows. Before beginning\, he reviews previous recordings\, replaying moments of linear memory in a recursive loop of tape. As Krapp both listens to the voice of his younger self and re-experiences the emotions evoked by the narrative of memory\, he reflects again about the meaning of it all. \nThe post screening discussion of the two films will be led by Dr. Lois More Overbeck\, Emory University\, editor of The Letters of Samuel Beckett (Cambridge University\, 2009-2016). \nThis event is a collaboration between the Consulate General of Ireland in Atlanta and Francophonie Atlanta. Since October 2018\, Ireland has been granted Observer Status at the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)\, and we are proud to welcome them into this year’s program. \nParking: If coming in from Peachtree Road\, parking in rear of building past Bank of America. If coming from Georgia 400\, once you enter the parking garage\, please take a left to park on the Monarch Plaza side of the building.

SUMMARY:GCIV Great Decisions Foreign Policy Lecture: Artificial Intelligence and Data
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence and Data \nLecture by Daniel Schiff\, Georgia Institute of Technology \nPolicymakers in many countries are developing plans and funding research in artificial intelligence (AI). Global growth is slowing\, and not surprisingly\, many policymakers hope that AI will provide a magic solution. The EU\, Brazil\, and other Western countries have adopted regulations that grant users greater control over their data and require that firms using AI be transparent about how they use it. Will the U.S. follow suit? \nGCIV serves as the statewide coordinator for the Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program that gives participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of current world affairs.

SUMMARY:Germanic Language & Dialect Series: Berlinerisch
DESCRIPTION:German leaners across the globe have had the experience of traveling abroad and realizing the German they learned in the classroom is not necessarily the German they hear among native speakers. Why is that? There are numerous dialects throughout all of the German-speaking countries\, and even within a variety\, there can be several other subcategories. The Germanic Language and Dialect Series will present derivatives of the standard variety also known as “Hochdeutsch.” Native speakers and language experts will provide background information\, historical context\, and numerous examples. It will be a fun\, interactive afternoon as each session will explore a new dialect in Germany\, Austria\, and Switzerland. \nPlease join Katja as she shares with you her native dialect Berlinerisch! \nMembers $10\, Non-Members $20

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Rumi Comes to America (Lecture/Book Signing)
DESCRIPTION:In 1976\, few people had heard of Jelaluddin Rumi. Yet\, in a stellar leap\, few could have predicted\, this 13th-century Islamic theologian would soon become America’s best-selling poet. From the author’s first-hand storytelling\, Rumi Comes to America describes the generational yearning\, fortuitous events\, spiritual mishaps\, and everyday miracles that propelled Rumi’s ancient mystical tradition to take root in America. \nThe story focuses on a group of young seekers\, inspired by author Reshad Feild’s spiritual journey to Turkey\, who invite Süleyman Loras Dede\, a simple cook and a mostly-unrecognized sheikh of the Whirling Dervishes in Konya\, Turkey to their modest duplex in Los Angeles. \nSüleyman Dede was eighteen years old when he entered the dervish monastery in Konya\, Turkey. But shortly after\, in 1926\, all dervish activities\, including the path of Rumi\, were banned by Kemal Atatürk\, in his quest to create a secular\, modern Turkey. \nWith dervish life underground\, Dede’s spiritual mastery would go mostly unnoticed in Turkey for decades it took until he set foot in Los Angeles on his culminating mission at the end of his life – to plant the seed for Rumi to blossom in America. \nAbout Bruce Miller \nAfter studying filmmaking and screenwriting at UCLA\, Bruce Miller spent the bulk of his career as a brand strategist\, media producer\, and marketing partner in an Atlanta brand agency. When he was a young man\, in the 1970s\, Bruce’s spiritual search led him to English author\, performer\, and teacher\, Reshad Feild. Together\, they started The Institute for Conscious Life\, the Mevlana Foundation\, and later\, the Chalice Guild. With Reshad\, Bruce helped bring the work of Jalaluddin Rumi to America\, the story recounted in “Rumi Comes to America. \nBruce has led residential seminars on the knowledge of the Octave\, ideas brought forth by P.D. Ouspensky and G.I. Gurdjieff\, and the Law of Hazard\, an understanding of risk and uncertainty based on the work of J.G. Bennett. Bruce’s first book\, “FORTUNE\, Our Deep Dive into the Mysteries of Love\, Healing\, and Success\,” explored the karmic mystery of why stuff happens – a book he wrote while his wife\, Karen was navigating a life-threatening illness. Bruce is currently finishing his third book\, BRAND STORY: How to Launch your Shoestring Startup like a National Brand.” Bruce is an active sailor\, yoga enthusiast\, and teaches the turn of the Whirling Dervishes. His wife\, Karen is an ordained minister and chaplain educator.

SUMMARY:Nix Mann Endowed Lecture
DESCRIPTION:What is ‘classical art’? Why is it that some ancient Greek and Roman artifacts\, but only some Greek and Roman artifacts\, got to move across cultures and time\, assuming a ‘classical’ status and dictating culture as they go? \nIn this year’s Nix Mann Endowed Lecture titled “The Shifting Shape of Classical Art” Caroline Vout\, professor of Classics and director of the Museum of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge\, examines how different periods have reinvented what classical art is through digging\, dealing\, drawing. It ends by asking whether classical art has a future.\nIn 1992 the architectural firm of Nix Mann & Associates (now Perkins + Will) endowed this lecture to bring distinguished speakers to campus on an annual basis. \nDr. Vout’s latest book\, Classical Art: A Life History from Antiquity to the Present\, is available in the Carlos Museum Bookshop and will be available at the lecture as well.
