SUMMARY:Diplomatic Dialogue: A Breakfast Meeting with Michel Gerebtzoff\, Consul General of Belgium
DESCRIPTION:Diplomatic Dialogue: A Breakfast Meeting with Michel Gerebtzoff\, Consul General of Belgium\n\nWhen: 11/09/2021 at 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM \nLocation: Offices of Arnall Golden Gregory LLP\, Atlanta \nThe United States established diplomatic relations with Belgium in 1832 following Belgium’s declaration of independence from the Netherlands. The United States and Belgium are good partners and NATO allies\, maintaining a cooperative relationship on a number of foreign policy issues. The Belgian public holds goodwill and affection for Americans as a result of the U.S. role during and after the two World Wars\, including Belgium’s liberation from Nazi Germany by British\, Canadian\, and U.S. forces in 1944. \nAs an outward-looking nation\, Belgium works closely with the United States bilaterally and in international and regional organizations to encourage economic and political cooperation and assistance to developing countries. The United States appreciates Belgian activism in international security operations\, including its participation in the NATO Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan\, the EU Training Mission in Mali\, and the Defeat-ISIS Coalition\, in addition to its contributions to various other NATO missions. Belgium is also a key provider of humanitarian\, reconstruction\, and development assistance to Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and Syria\, as well as many countries in Africa. As the host country of the EU and NATO headquarters\, Belgium plays an important role in European and Transatlantic diplomacy. \nMichel Gerebtzoff was born in Geneva on March 3\, 1972\, into a family with Russian and French roots. He graduated as a Water and Forestry Engineer from the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences in Gembloux\, Belgium. He first started a career in the private sector\, as a specialist in geographic databases and earth observation systems. \nAt the age of 30\, he passed the diplomatic competition and joined Foreign Affairs\, becoming Embassy Secretary in Geneva (WTO and WIPO\, from 2005 to 2008) and then in Beijing (2008-2012). After a year at the Directorate General of European Affairs (trade policy department)\, he returned to China\, to Guangzhou \, to head the office for the promotion of exports and investments of the Walloon Region (2013-2016). During that time he was also appointed to the Governing Board of the American International School of Guangzhou. \nUpon his return to Brussels\, he became an advisor at the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the European Union\, in charge of trade\, research and space (2016-2017)\, after which he became Chief of Staff to the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union (2017-2019).In 2019 he joined the cabinet of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders before becoming Deputy Chief of Staff to Minister of Foreign Affairs Philippe Goffin (2019-2020). In that capacity\, he sat on one of the main pandemic management bodies. \nMichel Gerebtzoff took office as Consul General of Belgium in Atlanta on August 1\, 2020. He is married and the father of two daughters.

SUMMARY:Authors Amplified: Dorian Brown Crosby's Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race
DESCRIPTION:Global Atlanta’s Authors Amplified series highlighting Georgia voices continues with an in-person interview with Dr. Dorian Brown Crosby\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Spelman College\, on her recently released book\, Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race. \nWe are excited to announce that this event has provided us with the unique opportunity to partner with Refuge Coffee Co.\, at their first physical location\, in Sweet Auburn for an evening event that celebrates refugee communities in Atlanta. As a non-profit organization\, their objective is to provide job creation and job training for resettled refugees. \nRefuge Coffee Co. began as a coffee truck that was founded and opened in Clarkston\, a city where Dr. Crosby has dedicated much of her time working with\, and a community that is a central focus in her book. \nTickets for in-person attendance are $15 each and include a free beverage of your choice\, so please feel free to order upon arrival and put it on the Global Atlanta tab. \nThere will be a meet and greet at 5:00 p.m. in advance of the interview at 5:30 p.m. that will be broadcast live to Zoom\, just in case you can’t join us in person. \nFor public health and safety reasons\, everyone attending in person must wear masks during the event when not eating.  \nCan’t make it? The interview portion of this event will also be broadcast and viewable free of charge via Zoom at 5:30 pm. Please select your preferred option when registering. \n \nHosted and Sponsored by Refuge Coffee Co. – Sweet Auburn location:  \n \nAbout the Book\n \nAs demographics change and the southern American region grows more multicultural\, clashes between mentalities and contemporary population realities increase. Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race offers a balanced and insightful look at Somalis in the southern United States. Politically centered\, it is a thought-provoking book that presents an essential and positive alternative to the familiar portrayal of Somalis in the United States as terrorists. It explains the U.S. resettlement process and illuminates the civic engagement and entrepreneurship of Somalis in Clarkston\, Georgia\, and Nashville\, Tennessee. \n  \nAbout the Author\nDr. Dorian Brown Crosby is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Spelman College in Atlanta\, Georgia. She is a faculty-mentor and Board Member of the Social Justice Program and the inaugural and former Director of Cultural Orientation in the Gordon-Zeto Center for Global Education at Spelman College. Dr. Brown Crosby graduated Cum Laude from Spelman with a B.A. in Political Science and earned her M.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Delaware in Newark\, Delaware. \nShe earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta\, Georgia. Her research focuses on resettled African refugees in the United States’ southeastern region\, placing her work in multiple contexts such as Forced Migration Studies\, American Government\, Women’s Studies\, Ethnic and Racial Politics\, and International Relations. \nHer first book\, Somalis in the Neo-South: African Immigration\, Politics and Race (2020\, Peter Lang)\, draws upon her research with resettled Somali communities in Clarkston\, Georgia\, and Nashville\, Tennessee. Her current research focuses on the voting patterns and motivations of former African refugees in the Southeastern region of the United States. \nAbout the Series\nGeorgia’s deep pool of international expertise is sometimes hidden in the ivory towers of academia or overshadowed by looming national figures. Sought-after thought leaders sometimes shine globally while being ignored in their own backyard. \nWith Authors Amplified\, a monthly series of book talks open to subscribers and the public\, Global Atlanta showcases authoritative local voices in foreign affairs and international business while highlighting the state’s intellectual contributions to important global conversations. \nThe Authors Amplified series is presented by the Atlanta Global Studies Center (AGSC)\, a partnership of Georgia Institute of Technology and Georgia State University\, funded in part by a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant\, with a mission to empower the metro region’s global agenda.

And how the Atlanta FinTech Ecosystem is leading the way in developing these alternative payment methods? \nThis FinTech panel discussion will be a HYBRID event\, with a very LIMITED number of seats if your would like to attend this event in-person. \nIf you are not able to join in-person or if the in-person event is sold out\, you will have the opportunity to join virtually. \nFor those you will be attending in-person\, please make sure to join at 7:30am EDT for a light breakfast networking session. \nFor those joining virtually\, the event will start at 8am EDT. \n  \nSpeakers: \nChristine de Wendel Co-founder and US CEO at sunday \n \n  \nNicolas Cabrera\, CPO at BAKKT \n \n  \nLori Wright\, Partner and chair of AGG’s Technology practice at Arnall Golden Gregory\, LLC \n \n  \nGayle Gorvett\, CEO & Managing Partner at GGorvett Consulting LLC and and Secretary at La French Tech Atlanta \n  \nThis panel discussion will be moderated by\, Trevor Williams \nManaging Editor at Global Atlanta \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday - The Younique Foundation
DESCRIPTION:The Younique Foundation is an incredible organization whose resources seek to liberate individuals from the impacts of child sexual abuse. \nDue to generous donations from the founders and other donors\, 100% of contribution goes to programs and services. \nLearn more about the Younique Foundation’s 2021 Giving Tuesday campaign here >> https://support.youniquefoundation.org/campaign/giving-tuesday/c363862 \nWhat Is Giving Tuesday?   \nGiving Tuesday is an annual global day of charitable giving. It is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year and kicks off the holiday season. Giving Tuesday sets the tone of kindness\, caring\, and generosity that is quintessential to that time of year. \nWhy support The Younique Foundation on Giving Tuesday?  \nThe Younique Foundation’s services are crucial to liberating society from the epidemic of child sexual abuse. \n\n1 in 5 children in the United States are sexually abused each year. After the abuse\, millions of them will go on to live with trauma symptoms related to the abuse\, some of which endure for decades. Many will experience mental health challenges\, including anxiety\, painful addictions\, and suicidality.\nThe Younique Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity that is committed to eradicating child sexual abuse and the traumatic toll it takes on survivors. Their work seeks to stop cycles of abuse by providing healing services for survivors\, prevention resources for parents\, and advocacy tools that help create change across communities.\n\nThe Younique Foundation’s goal is to raise $100\,000 for the fight against child sexual abuse this year\, and Giving Tuesday (November 30\, 2021) is the most important day of the year for non-profit fundraising. Please join in helping the Younique Foundation reach their goal.
