SUMMARY:Germanic Language & Dialect Series: Berlinerisch
DESCRIPTION:German leaners across the globe have had the experience of traveling abroad and realizing the German they learned in the classroom is not necessarily the German they hear among native speakers. Why is that? There are numerous dialects throughout all of the German-speaking countries\, and even within a variety\, there can be several other subcategories. The Germanic Language and Dialect Series will present derivatives of the standard variety also known as “Hochdeutsch.” Native speakers and language experts will provide background information\, historical context\, and numerous examples. It will be a fun\, interactive afternoon as each session will explore a new dialect in Germany\, Austria\, and Switzerland. \nPlease join Katja as she shares with you her native dialect Berlinerisch! \nMembers $10\, Non-Members $20

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Rumi Comes to America (Lecture/Book Signing)
DESCRIPTION:In 1976\, few people had heard of Jelaluddin Rumi. Yet\, in a stellar leap\, few could have predicted\, this 13th-century Islamic theologian would soon become America’s best-selling poet. From the author’s first-hand storytelling\, Rumi Comes to America describes the generational yearning\, fortuitous events\, spiritual mishaps\, and everyday miracles that propelled Rumi’s ancient mystical tradition to take root in America. \nThe story focuses on a group of young seekers\, inspired by author Reshad Feild’s spiritual journey to Turkey\, who invite Süleyman Loras Dede\, a simple cook and a mostly-unrecognized sheikh of the Whirling Dervishes in Konya\, Turkey to their modest duplex in Los Angeles. \nSüleyman Dede was eighteen years old when he entered the dervish monastery in Konya\, Turkey. But shortly after\, in 1926\, all dervish activities\, including the path of Rumi\, were banned by Kemal Atatürk\, in his quest to create a secular\, modern Turkey. \nWith dervish life underground\, Dede’s spiritual mastery would go mostly unnoticed in Turkey for decades it took until he set foot in Los Angeles on his culminating mission at the end of his life – to plant the seed for Rumi to blossom in America. \nAbout Bruce Miller \nAfter studying filmmaking and screenwriting at UCLA\, Bruce Miller spent the bulk of his career as a brand strategist\, media producer\, and marketing partner in an Atlanta brand agency. When he was a young man\, in the 1970s\, Bruce’s spiritual search led him to English author\, performer\, and teacher\, Reshad Feild. Together\, they started The Institute for Conscious Life\, the Mevlana Foundation\, and later\, the Chalice Guild. With Reshad\, Bruce helped bring the work of Jalaluddin Rumi to America\, the story recounted in “Rumi Comes to America. \nBruce has led residential seminars on the knowledge of the Octave\, ideas brought forth by P.D. Ouspensky and G.I. Gurdjieff\, and the Law of Hazard\, an understanding of risk and uncertainty based on the work of J.G. Bennett. Bruce’s first book\, “FORTUNE\, Our Deep Dive into the Mysteries of Love\, Healing\, and Success\,” explored the karmic mystery of why stuff happens – a book he wrote while his wife\, Karen was navigating a life-threatening illness. Bruce is currently finishing his third book\, BRAND STORY: How to Launch your Shoestring Startup like a National Brand.” Bruce is an active sailor\, yoga enthusiast\, and teaches the turn of the Whirling Dervishes. His wife\, Karen is an ordained minister and chaplain educator.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Taiwan-US Relations: A Winning Formula for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:It is with great regret that ACIR informs you that the luncheon with Ambassador Stanley Kao\, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative to the United States scheduled for Monday\, March 16 has been canceled.\n— \nFollowing the President Trump’s address yesterday and in consultation with the representatives of the Republic of China (Taiwan)\, they have decided it prudent to cancel the program. They hope you will understand that the situation has reached a point where there is serious concern that a single infected person at the program might endanger the health of all others and\, as a minimum\, those attending might be placed in quarantine\, greatly affecting their daily lives. \n \nAbout Ambassador Kao \nAfter graduating from National Chengchi University\, Kao began working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980. He was sent to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Honolulu\, Hawaii and later assigned to TECRO in Atlanta\, Georgia in 1993. Kao then became an advisor to TECRO in Malaysia. From 1996 to 1997\, he was a fellow at Harvard University’s Center for International Affairs. By 2000\, Kao had become the deputy director general of MOFA’s North American Affairs department. He was promoted to director general of that division the following year. \nIn 2002\, he was appointed deputy representative of the Republic of China (ROC) to the World Trade Organization. Kao then served as the deputy representative to the United States beginning in 2004. He was named representative to Hungary in November 2007 and took office on 1 February 2008. After his stint in Hungary\, Kao was appointed the ROC representative to Italy in 2013. On 23 May 2016\, he was appointed as the ROC representative to the United States. Kao made his first official trip to the United States on 5 June\, prior to a swearing-in ceremony held on 2 August 2016.

SUMMARY:Nix Mann Endowed Lecture
DESCRIPTION:What is ‘classical art’? Why is it that some ancient Greek and Roman artifacts\, but only some Greek and Roman artifacts\, got to move across cultures and time\, assuming a ‘classical’ status and dictating culture as they go? \nIn this year’s Nix Mann Endowed Lecture titled “The Shifting Shape of Classical Art” Caroline Vout\, professor of Classics and director of the Museum of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge\, examines how different periods have reinvented what classical art is through digging\, dealing\, drawing. It ends by asking whether classical art has a future.\nIn 1992 the architectural firm of Nix Mann & Associates (now Perkins + Will) endowed this lecture to bring distinguished speakers to campus on an annual basis. \nDr. Vout’s latest book\, Classical Art: A Life History from Antiquity to the Present\, is available in the Carlos Museum Bookshop and will be available at the lecture as well.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: A Discussion with Peter Beinart
DESCRIPTION:In January\, the Trump administration brought us to the brink of a dangerous war of choice with Iran. In response\, we welcomed the passage of war powers resolutions in both the House and Senate\, which denied the president authorization to go to war with Iran without congressional approval. \nAnd just a few weeks ago\, President Trump released his Israeli-Palestinian peace sham\, giving the green light to West Bank annexation and permanent occupation. \nWe need clear-minded analysis to help us make sense of this chaotic moment in Middle East diplomacy. That’s why J Street is excited to welcome internationally-acclaimed author and political commentator Peter Beinart to Atlanta\, where he will discuss these latest developments and this critical year in Israeli and American politics. \nAn Evening with Peter Beinart \n \n  \n6:30pm: VIP reception | $150\n7:30pm: Presentation and discussion | Free
