DESCRIPTION:Thomas Mann: Democracy Will Win! is intended as a concrete contribution to current debate on both sides of the Atlantic. \nThomas Mann\, German writer and Nobel laureate\, immigrated to California\, and used the radio medium to spread thoughts on democracy to the German people during Nazi rule. In 1943\, he addressed the Library of Congress with his famous speech: “It is a terrible spectacle when the irrational becomes popular.” \nThe first part of the exhibit presents Thomas Mann’s political biography. The second\, multimedia part of the exhibit connects this history to the present. What makes a political person? How does one become a supporter of democracy? How does one defend one’s stance? \nExhibit – Nov. 2 – Dec. 3\, 2022\nOpening Night – Nov. 2\, 6:00-8:30PM \nFind all “democracy” events in the events calendar on the Goethe-Zentrum website\, e.g.\n– Virtual/hybrid guided tour through Berlin “Berlin’s street signs tell Germany’s colonial history”\n– Inclusivv conversation “Common Ground”

SUMMARY:Atlanta Opera Community Conversation - Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:The Atlanta Opera’s presentation of Madama Butterfly in November 2022 provides an opportunity for discussion and reflection on a beautiful and beloved\, but also troubled work of art. \nThe Atlanta Opera will produce a series of events and community conversations along with partners such as the Japan American Society of Georgia to contextualize and create a safe space for open-eyed exploration of Madama Butterfly. Fundamentally\, this is an opera written in the first decade of the 1900’s by a European man\, which reaches our modern ears and understanding in a different way. \nTheir goal is to ensure that audiences and performers of all races and ethnicities have the resources to think critically about the work. Community programming both live and digital will be announced as they are finalized over the summer. \nDetails: \n\nThe cast includes Japanese and Asian-American performers\, and their participation and representation is important to us. We realize that their experiences bring much to their performances\, and that these experiences are unique and their own.\nInclusion is not only important on stage but off stage\, as well. We will bring in advisors to guide our production and ensure respectful staging and conversation in the rehearsal process. Specifically\, a movement consultant.\nThe Atlanta Opera admires colleagues who acknowledge and embrace the work that must be done to present Madama Butterfly successfully.
